Just a quickie...
Went to see Avenue Q in London's West End last night. A brilliantly funny, adult version of Sesame Street and well worth going if you haven't seen it yet. The New Yorkers may have caught it already as it started on Broadway.
Anyway, the role of Christmas Eve, the terrible Japanese councillor, was played by Naoko Mori - Toshiko in Torchwood. She was brilliant - very funny, charasmatic, a great singer and a real stage presence. Which was a revelation to me as I'm finding the characters on Torchwood so bland. Just goes to show that the best actors are scuppered if the scripts are bad.
Go see it, but it's quite politically incorrect, so be warned if you're offended by such things.

Last night someone waved a ticket in front of me. They said "Hey Kat, I have a spare ticket for Avenue Q, want to come?".
I thought for a moment. Having already seen this excelent musical I was reluctant to part with £25 again...then I remembered this post.
So. A little background. I have now seen this show twice. In honesty the first time was better, the cast were not swallowing their words so much and the performances had a fresher feel. The show itself, marketed as a shoking piece of theatre, remains too tame for an English audiences, laced with a saccharine ending and far too much of a feel good lunchtime kids show atmosphere. For a nation that came up with 'The League of Gentlemen', 'Little Britain', 'Nighty Night' and many more truly 'shocking' comedies the oar is never really pushed out far enough in my opinion. An interesting comparison with Torchwood actually.
My friend summed it up perfectly, "It's JUST seasame Street with a bit of swearing and a bit of shaggin'".
Still, a fantastic show!
Now for a clinical breakdown of Naoko's performance.
Good. Not great, but good. She has an excellent singing voice, but comparative to the previous actress she was less clear and not 'ethnic' enough for a role which demands a comedy stereotype performance, Naoko sometimes had problems delivering this when singing. Most importantly she is far too pretty for the role (An interesting criticism!). She had a few comic nuances though which were different and much better than the previous performer and drew the audiences attention and humour (another friend leant over to me at one point and said, "That girl is fantastic!"), and what's more she seemed to be really having fun with it.
However, don't let any of my negativity(TM) put anyone in the UK off from seeing this show. I'm in the interesting position of being able to compare. And being able to compare her to Tosh in Torchwood is interesting too, the character of 'Christmas Eve' in Ave Q is very dynamic, a bolshy, bossy asian-american. Versus a coy, undervalued british geek (I know hiw it feels to be one of those) shows great range in Naoko's repatoir.
Over all one thing I have learnt. Naoki is capable of far much more than she is currently allowed to show on Torchwood, we saw a little of it in 'Greeks Bearing Gifts', but I hope we'll find in future episodes that there is a lot more to Miss Toshiko than we have yet seen.

Reading about this show and checking out the links, it kind of reminds me of the fantastic but short-lived TV show, Greg the Bunny. I was so happy they released it on DVD. That's a show that should have been allowed to build an audience. It was a riot.
