Future Doctor you post was articulate and well put. The other gentleman has taken offense where none was needed however consider he was posting on a site relating to a show he didn't like. I suspect he would be happier posting on a site relating to something he does like.

    Practice acts of random kindness.

[Quote  by:  Future Doctor]If Russel T. Davies is consequent and still has his abilities (and still is the genius that he was behind The Second Coming) we will see Jack and his team face that fact, preferrably portrayed in a confrontation with our beloved Doctor, who puts things to right. If that happens, than this strange morality turns out to be a plot device and this series gains a lot of weight.

That would be great if that is what is going on. Actually, I was thinking about your comment when watching "They keep killing Suzie" and thought that it might have been turning the way that you suggest, when Gwen's moral sense seemed to be required to get better results from the glove. I also thought I saw a hint in that direction in "Random shoes". I hope you're right.

Well, the point I was trying to make was lost in the discussion of assumptions drawn from beyond what I wrote or applying general terms that I used too narrowly.

You're right, I made wrong assumptions about what you meant... Sorry about that.

[Quote  by:  daveac]if ALL fictional characters are expected to have these 'high ideals' then that would surely mean that ALL fiction becomes a tool of 'social indoctrination.'

I'm not sure if I'm really disagreeing with you, but every work of art is expressing a morality. It is impossible to express anything without expressing your morality. That is different than intentionally injecting a moral lesson into something.

I don't have a problem with the sex, and I don't have a problem with violence in and of itself. A scene that is violent in a movie that was meant to be disturbing is expressing a morality that is disturbed by violence.

What I've been complaining about is what I have seen as the lack of sensitivity that is expressed in the violence in the show. Desensitizing violence, is what I'm claiming to see in the show.

But, it might have changed, starting with episode 8.

It would be great if future doctor has guessed correctly and that the strange morality is intentionally presented as a plot device.
