The Boston Globe newspaper has rated The Top Science Fiction Television Shows of All Time and within that list among the top ten Doctor Who ranks as number 8 in the list. Unfortunately, it appears the newspaper is completely unaware that the series has been renewed with new episodes this year, and new episodes planned for the next two years as well and hopefully onward.
"Sure, many of the monsters were terribly cheesy, but it is a classic nonetheless," states the article.
Actually if you realize that the classic series has not been broadcast in the U.S. in some number of years now and the new series has yet been broadcast at all yet in the U.S., it may be a miracle that Doctor Who even made this mainstream list at all, let alone making it within the top ten.

Last month on August 21st, Robert Moog passed away at age 71 from a brain tumor. Although perhaps not directly involved in the creation of Doctor Who, he did play a role in the series old and new. As Bob Moog (rhymes with "vogue") had invented the Moog synthesizer which gave Doctor Who it's signature sound. From various revisions of the theme music to many of the special effects sounds, to the famous (or infamous) Dalek voices. Even today, in the 2005 series, Moog synthesizers continue to play a role in the sound of Doctor Who.
The Dalek voices of old and the new series were created by speaking into a ring modulator, a device invented by Bob Moog. If not for Moog, the Daleks we know and grew up with may have a completely different sound.

The Writers' Guild of Great Britain have praised Doctor Who at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) conference in Brighton, in a call for more funding for UK television productions reports BBC News. According to the Guild, Doctor Who showed there is "still an audience for quality family entertainment."
They congratulated the BBC for Doctor Who's success in its return to television after a 16 year hiatus.
Guild member Hugh Stoddart stated, "The popularity of the series demonstrates that there is still an audience for quality family entertainment, and that distinctive UK television productions can still provide a talking point for the nation."
He continued, "while some imports and so-called 'reality' shows have their place in the schedules, they cost jobs and reduce opportunities for workers in our television industry."
Staddart had launched criticism aimed at the BBC for "damaging cuts" in funding home-grown television written, performed, and produced in the UK.

Greetings to all you hard-working Who afficionados.
As an only occasional Doctor Who, I'm not sure how interesting this will be to you, or indeed if this is common knowledge. In any case, I was re-reading Douglas Adams fantastic book: "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" the other day and realised that Doug had clearly purloined plot sections and whole characters from Tom Baker-era episodes he must have been involved in as co-writer. Specifically, Shada and City of Death are instantly noticeable, perhaps others as well.
Whether Douglas was just subconsciously recycling ideas, or deliberately referencing his earlier work (more likely I suspect), I couldn't say.

The national web site for Wales, icWales is reporting that the demand for Doctor Who toys is soaring! It reports that retailers fear that they will not be able to keep up with the high demand.
Comic Guru Presents, a store that specializes in Doctor Who books, videos, CDs, and toys in Cardiff assistant manger, Alan Vaughan said, "We have people coming in two to three times a day asking about when the new toys are going to come out, everyone's waiting for them. When they come in we expect them to start flying out the door. In between now and Christmas that's what everyone will be wanting."
"Doctor Who is unlike anything else. The new series has attracted a new fan base. But they've also managed to retain their older fan base, people who have been fans for over 20 years. That's a remarkable achievement," said the Managing Partner of UK's leading suppliers of Doctor Who merchandise, Galaxy 4.
"We've already had thousands of preorders for the new range. The most popular toy so far seems to be the sonic screwdriver, because it's something kids can keep in their pocket, and they can play the role of the Doctor, or Rose. But there's also lots of collectors, people in their 60s who will be buying them as well."
Some of the Doctor Who toys expected:
Sonic Screwdriver - Features lights, sound effects, hidden UV pen, and more. £9.99
Radio-Control Dalek - 12-inch authentic movement travel with flashing lights and speaks phrases. £39.99
3D Character Walkie-Talkies - In the 12-inch shape of the Doctor and the Slitheen alien with posable arms reach 15 meters in their range. £19.99
Talking TARDIS Money Box - 8-inch TARDIS model features spoken phrases, Rose and the Doctor inside, flashing lamp, and more. £9.99
