    Doctor Who News

Today, the 23rd of November, the anniversary of the Doctor Who series brings sad news of the person that made it a reality 44 years ago in 1963. As reported on Outpost Gallifrey, the series original producer Verity Lambert has passed away at the age of 71.

Verity pioneered the series as its first producer hired by series creator Sydney Newman himself. Notable at the BBC for not only being the youngest producer at the age of 27, but also the only female producer at the time. She produced the series from 1963 through 1965. Also listed among her long list of credits are Rumpole of the Bailey (1978-1980), Minder (1979), Quatermass (1979), along with many others.

Verity did not shy away from speaking about her early work on Doctor Who. You can find her interviews, statements, and commentaries in various documentaries, printed material, DVDs, etc. over the years.

Thank you Verity for bringing the series to life, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

If you haven't yet had an opportunity to catch this mini episode, Time Crash starring Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor and David Tennant as the 10th Doctor created for Children in Need, you can watch it online on the Children in Need site. The story takes place between the end of last series (Last of the Time Lords) and the upcoming Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned. Catch the 8 minute episode now as it will most likely only be available for a limited time (as was the case the last time a mini-episode was produced for Children in Need in 2005).

While you are there, feel free to make a donation to Children in Need. After viewing it, discuss it here.

DW ReviewsStarring Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor with Bonnie Langford as Mel

Are you sitting comfortably...? Then we'll begin.

    The Wishing Beast.

    Once upon a time...

The Doctor and Mel receive a strange transmission and materialise on an even stranger and very inhospitable asteroid. As they are about to leave another transmission arrives from what appears to be two little old ladies and the asteroid transforms itself into an idyllic forest.

The two old ladies have summoned our travellers to bestow a reward on a great hero from beyond space and time and it is not the Doctor. Mel's reward is a visit to the "Wishing Beast" which of course will grant the hero's greatest wish.

What follows is obviously based in the world of fairy tales but surprisingly the play works very well and is entertaining to adult ears. The forest has ghosts instead of fairies; an inter-dimensional entity instead of a big bad wolf and of course in the best tradition of fairy tales; the little old ladies are the equivalent of wicked witches. Obviously the moral of the story is to be careful what you wish for (because you just may get it.)

If this play had a weakness then it was in the ending which was a little on the weak side but then again what fairy tale doesn't have a weak ending?
