Today, BBC Wales made an announcement of three new key appointments to its production of Doctor Who as the series begins its transition to the Matt Smith era.
Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead producer, Tracie Simpson and Torchwood: Children of Earth series producer, Peter Bennett have been made producers to the flagship show.
Ashes to Ashes (the spin-off/sequel drama series of Life on Mars) producer Beth Willis will join Piers Wenger and Lead Writer Steven Moffat as an Executive Producer for the series.
BBC Wales stated that Willis will work closely with Bennett and Simpson on the day to day running of the series as she works on a range of other BBC Wales dramas.
Pre-production begins next month and shooting is slated to begin late summer in and around the Cardiff area.

According to a new post on the DWIN website (located at http://www.dwin.org/article.php?sid=268 ) the new Doctor Who Easter special "Planet Of The Dead" will air in Canada on Saturday, June 20th at 9:30 PM on the SPACE channel.
DWIN also reports that SPACE will be the new Canadian home for Doctor Who and will be airing Season 5 of Doctor Who in Canada - although apparently no confirmation has been made yet about airing the other David Tennant specials that are apparently airing in the UK around Christmastime 2008.
No word yet if SPACE will start to air any of the episodes from Seasons 1-4, which the CBC apparently is still airing on their digital only station BOLD.

The 2008 Doctor Who Christmas Special 'The Next Doctor' will debut on Canadian television next Saturday.
The program, which has been shown so far in both Australia and at home in the UK, will air Saturday, March 14th at 9:00PM EST on the SPACE network in Canada. This will mark the first time that an episode of the new Doctor Who series has not been shown first by the CBC in Canada.
Of course, SPACE has a history with Doctor Who in Canada. In the station's early days they aired the original run of the program, starting with the William Hartnell years. In 2008, the station also played the 2nd series of Torchwood when the CBC decided not to air it.
In the past month or so, SPACE has done more advanced promotion for this special episode than the CBC did for the past two series in their entirety. They also played a quite interesting ad for "The Next Doctor" during the Friday, March 6th episode of Battlestar Galactica. It basically said "The Doctor is back where be belongs (on) Space."
By having this air next week, things are now back on track for Canada to air episodes before airing in the US on Sci-Fi.
Classic DW episodes have also started to air again weeknights on Canada at 10 PM and 2 AM EST on BBC Kids Canada.

Those of you reeling from the emptiness of a year without BBC Doctor Who may take heart from the fact that Season 3 of Big Finish's Eighth Doctor Adventures is about to start. On Saturday, 7 March 2009, the first episode of the third season of Lucie Miller/Eighth Doctor adventures will be released.
"Orbis" continues directly on after the rather enormous cliffhanger at the end of season two's finale, "Vengeance of Morbius". Thereafter, a new episode will be released each month through October — taking us almost all the way to David Tennant's last turn as the Doctor. Like last season, this one promises the return of a number of one-off televised villains, such as the Krynoids and the Wirrn.
Individual episodes are priced at about US$16 per physical CD, but the entire series of eight episodes will only cost US$55 if downloaded. This seasonal download price represents a substantial savings off the usual per-adventure yearly subscription price. But it's not exactly "recession sale pricing". Eighth Doctor Adventures have a different, shorter format than those for "past Doctors".

Some comments from IDW about their Doctor Who comic book line up and plans during their panel at NYCC on the 6th of February 2009. The clip includes Tony Lee (he is wearing the black vest).
Apologies for the video is a bit crude here.
