Doctor Who NewsFrom Outpost Gallifrey: Sci-Fi Wire of the Sci-Fi Channel has announced that the North American release of series two will be on January 16, 2007. It will be identical to the region 2 box set which is scheduled for a November 20, 2006 release.

I was going to buy the region 2 seat for myself as a birthday present, like I did last year, but if it's only going to be a wait of a couple months, maybe I'll wait. ;-)

Doctor Who NewsUnless you're a diehard Smallville fan, it may have easily escaped your noticed that actor Yee Jee Tso contributed to the fifth season of the series which explores the youth of the last son of Krypton. He appeared in a series of webcasts surrounding the episode "Vengeance".

While Doctor Who began using add-on scenes, called Tardisodes, with series 2, Smallville has been using Allison Mack's Chloe Sullivan in webcasts since 2001. The basic concept? Chloe uses her investigative skills to further explore story lines presented in a particular season. Despite having been around since the events of Season 1's "Jitters", there have been, so far, only three complete seasons of Chloe Chronicles.

Season 5's series, called the Vengeance Chronicles, looked at the lives of various Metropolis "meteor freaks" left behind by Lex Luthor when he had to clean up his image before his state senate race.

Though the main focus of the piece was Denise Quiñones' Andrea Rojas from "Vengeance", Yee appeared in the bulk of the episodes as Nick Yang, boyfriend of Season 3's computer hacker Molly Griggs. His power was the ability to control electricity, much like the classic comic character Black Lightning.

As they're not designed for delivery to cell phones, Chronicles are comparatively longer than Tardisodes, with a whole season clocking in at about 30 minutes.

To check out the former Doctor Who star, pick up a copy of the Smallville Season 5 DVD boxset. It was released in North America on 12 September 2006.

    Doctor Who News

The Doctor Who BBC web site is reporting that Doctor Who Monthly has Russell T Davies explaining that he has the 2008 series in the planning stages now even though it has not yet been commissioned by the BBC (see BBC - Series four plans - Russell T Davies talks about the future). RTD states that he expects that a 2008 series will indeed be commissioned by the BBC and the production team needs to be prepared.

Meanwhile, the tabloid The Sun is reporting that David Tennant has signed for the 2008 series ("Series Four") in a £1 million deal. The tabloid goes on to say that he is not expected to stay in the role after that as "he is being flooded with film offers." It claims that an 'insider' has said, "David absolutely loves the programme but if it comes back for a fifth season bosses will have to find a new Dr Who." See The Sun Online - Tennant to return as Doctor

As always, with any reports in the tabloid papers, please consider the source.

Amazon.com is now renting Doctor Who Video Downloads to it's US customers. Priced at $1.99 per episode similar to the Apple iTunes Music Store for television episodes, these episodes unlike the Apple iTunes Music Store can only be "rented" - in other words, they can be stored on your PC for 30 days and once you initially play it, you are limited to 168 hours to watch it before it expires. Another limitation is that it is restricted to only the Windows XP platform due to the DRM scheme they are using.

    Doctor Who episodes available are from seasons 1, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12 - 16, 19, 21, 22, and 26 spanning the years 1963 through 1989.

Doctor Who NewsNot sure any of us heard about THIS proposed spin off!

According to BBC Online, Plans for a Doctor Who spin-off show starring Billie Piper were scrapped at the last minute, series producer Russell T Davies has revealed.
"It was actually commissioned by the controller of BBC One and budgeted," the writer told Doctor Who Magazine.

Davies later decided the programme, Rose Tyler: Earth Defence, was "a spin-off too far" and called it off.

Doctor Who NewsFrom This Week in Doctor Who:

SciFi has quietly updated their schedulebot for Friday September 29. Previously it showed the Season premiere of Doctor Who as a 4 hour block from 9PM to 1AM Eastern. Now it shows:

    8:00PM - Doctor Who
    9:30PM - Doctor Who
    10:30PM - Doctor Who
    12:00AM - Doctor Who

No episode titles listed yet, but since the first episode of the series (The Christmas Invasion) is 59 minutes not counting commercials, the implication is that it would air at 8PM and 10:30PM with the more regular length New Earth at 9:30PM and 12:00AM. Time will tell.

So - US premiere of Series 2 starts at 8PM Eastern on September 29, not 9PM.

Doctor Who NewsCopied from SciFi.com's SciFi Wire:

SCI FI Channel and BBC Worldwide Americas announced a major licensing agreement for SCI FI to air the second season of the hit British SF series Doctor Who in the United States. The series will return to SCI FI on Sept. 29, kicking off with a two-hour premiere that will include the "Christmas Invasion" special in which David Tennant is introduced as the 10th Time Lord.

Billie Piper returns as the Doctor's feisty young companion, Rose Tyler, and together they will travel through time and space battling new and returning aliens and monsters.

Chris Regina, vice president of programming, SCI FI Channel, said in a statement: "Our audience has clearly embraced Doctor Who, and it has delivered a significant increase in viewers in the time period. We are looking forward to keeping the momentum going with David Tennant as the new Doctor."

Executive producer and lead writer Russell T Davies said in a separate statement: "We were delighted by the first season's success in the U.S. and can promise new thrills, new laughs, new heartbreak and some terrifying new aliens in season two."

Executive-produced by Davies and Julie Gardner, the second season of Doctor Who was the most popular program on Saturday nights when it aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom to critical acclaim.

Runaway Bride Origins Revealed!  View Printable Version

Doctor Who NewsFrom the BEEB online

Russell T Davies has explained the genesis of this year's Christmas Special in the pages of Doctor Who Magazine's Series Two Companion.

"The Runaway Bride was another of those ideas I'd had for ages, ever since the return of Doctor Who was first announced," he said.

"Then, at the BAFTA screening of The Parting of the Ways, Jane Tranter announced not just the 2005 Christmas Special, but another for 2006 as well (I swear, Julie Gardner had forgotten to tell me about the 2006 one - as Jane was on the microphone, Julie was watching my head explode. 'Oh yes, sorry, I knew there was something I meant to tell you...')

"And since we all knew that Billie would be leaving at the end of Series Two, and that I didn't want to introduce the new companion until the start of Series Three, then suddenly The Runaway Bride took on a whole new lease of life," he added.

"So the story was taken out of Series Two, elevated to Christmas, and the gap was filled by Tooth and Claw, which was bumped up to the second slot..."

More of Russell's behind-the-scenes scoops, plus a comprehensive guide to all of the last series can be found in the Doctor Who Series Two Companion, on sale Thursday 10 August, priced £5.99
