New Cybermen - Opinion  View Printable Version

EditorialsThe new Cybermen are great looking... ROBOTS! Let's look at what it is to be scary: a completely machine robot can be scary but what would have been better is the machine/human amalgam - the flesh poking through, a la the Borg. What made the original Cybermen great was not the idiotically huge equipment they carried, but the fact that the only thing hiding the rotting corpse underneath was a thin cloth. Back then they hadn't the budget so they made do with what they had and came up with a truly disturbing image. Now, they make these giant what? ROBOTS. They do not show any human elements. That might be cool looking, but what is missing is the completely disconcerting image of human parts meshed with machine.
I am sure we'll all love the new Cybermen for what they are: villains, but to me, there is little scary about their look. No more than the Lost in Space robot would have instilled terror. Now a thing mostly machine with nearly dead human attributes sticking through... that would be the stuff of nightmares!

Two Insane Fans Commentaries  View Printable Version

EditorialsIn the latest podcast, the guys mention a fan-done DVD-style commentary. Well, I figured this was a great segeway for this story.

My good friend Sarah and I have recorded some DVD-style commentaries for a couple of episodes of the new series as well as two complete classic series stories! And there's more to come in the future (time permitting!)

You can find the commentaries at: Two Isane Fans--The Waldorf and Statler of Dr Who Commentaries.

So far, we've done commentaries for:

    Classic Series
    Tomb of the Cybermen, 1-4
    Logopolis, 1-4

    New Series
    Rose
    Dalek
    Father's Day
    Empty Child
    Doctor Dances
    Bad Wolf
    Parting of the Ways

    And coming soon...Ghost Light!

Also, I just want to add that in one of our classic commentaries, we invite the Podshock creators to join us for a commentary or two. I then realized--hey, we've never announced ourselves to them, so odds of them hearing about it and responding are slim to none. So, here I am again, publically inviting the guys to join us for some commentary.

    Enjoy!

    EditorialsJames, Ken, Louis;

Thanks for doing a fairly lengthy piece on my "Second Key" photo story. I listened intently as you spent a fair amount of time commenting glowingly on my story.

As you talked about it, I realized I gave you very little background on myself and my history. For my first Doctor Who photo story, Redemption, I did a "Behind the TARDIS" page which describes in great detail just why I did it, giving a lot of the background and motivations for the story.

     Fan Films...  View Printable Version

EditorialsAfter reading Sean Huxter's excellent Doctor Who Photo-story, I've been surfing around for other decent Doctor Who fan ficton.

Obviously it goes without saying that fan-films are a huge part of science fiction in general - particularly so of mainstream series like Star Wars. This ranges from things that are entriely comedic in nature to serious fan films. Most of these films now have excellent production values considering budget, largely thanks to the computing revolution of recent years.

One of the most popular databases for fan films is that of fanfilms.net, so if you are looking for a wide variety of fan films this should be your first port of call. Currently the Doctor Who Section of this site has 95 films listed.

From this site I managed to find a local studio called Westlake Films, who are based in Sowerby Bridge here in West Yorkshire. They are a group of Whovians who get together frequently to produce funny films based on the Doctor Who universe. Particularly good is a series called Star Trek VS. Doctor Who, which as the name suggests, pits two of the most popular sci-fi series in order to determine which is the best of all time. I thought that the scenes with the inflatable daleks were hilarious!

Another particularly good story is that of the Nemesis of Doom where we see the ninth Doctor and his unknown companion roaming the streets of Yorkshire, closely followed by the Master. It's all good fun and makes good viewing when you have a few minutes spare. Anyway - check it out and let me know what you think.

I'm really tired of these "Fannies"  View Printable Version

Editorials You know, I'm getting really tired of these so called fannies. OK, they're not called fannies, thats what I call them. They pop up in the sci-fi world whenever something new comes down the pipe. You know the type: "I dont like the new Doctor", "I hate the new Battlestar Galactica", "Jar Jar ruined Star Wars", "Star Trek: The Next Gen wont be as good as the original" On and on.
Science fiction fans consider themselves open minded and foward thinking. Really? Prove it.
Why hate the thing you love? Sit back and be glad 2005 turned out to be the best year for sci-fi/fantasy films and TV since the early 80's.
The same people wearing "Classic Trek" t-shirts (remember those?) are the ones forking over money to keep Enterprise on the air.
Now I read that David Tennant is getting flack from so-called fans unhappy with his choice for Doctor #10. Are you kidding me? Again? Did we NOT learn our lesson? No one has seen him as the Doctor for more than a minute. Russell T. Davies gives me no reason to doubt him. This new series is near perfect. His casting excellent. Yet, here we go again.... Fannies. Didn't you torture J-NT enough? Get over youself. Open your mind, be glad the show has returned. If RTD needs your help, he'll ask. As for me, he won't call me. Come to think of it, he won't call you either!
