Tomorrow kicks off New York Comic Con (NYCC) at the Javits Center in Manhattan in which we will see for the first time in a long time Doctor Who and now Torchwood guests appearing in a New York convention.
Joining the event along with Colin Baker (the sixth Doctor of Doctor Who) and Doctor Who writer Paul Cornell will be Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper of Torchwood and Doctor Who as well as Gwyneth in Doctor Who: The Unquiet Dead), and director for both series Euros Lyn.
One of the premiere forerunners in bringing HD content to homes in the US, founded by Mark Cuban and GM Philip Garvin in 2001, HDNet has made a deal for the high definition (HD) rights for Torchwood. HDNet has acquired the rights for the first 26 episodes (presumably series 1 and series 2) of the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood.
HDNet will begin airing Torchwood starting on the 17th of September, Monday nights at 7pm ET with encore showings at 10pm and 1am (to accommodate west coast viewers).
Torchwood will be getting its own magazine in January 2008, according to a story broken by Kasterborous.
Published by Titan Magazines, the magazine will be somewhat similar to Doctor Who Magazine, in that it will be a mix of news, interviews and even comic material. Titan's comic publishing rights also extend to stand-alone graphic novels. This means they will likely be the first to publish full-length comic stories set in the Doctor Who universe since Colin Baker's one-off Sixth Doctor adventure in 1994, The Age of Chaos, which detailed what had happened to Peri after "Trial of a Time Lord".
Titan is a comic-publishing powerhouse in the UK, with a history of obtaining the UK rights for American properties—particularly those in the DC and Star Wars universes. Their magazine division has long presented original periodicals covering a wide range of popular television shows such as Grey's Anatomy, 24, and Smallville. Doctor Who fans may know Titan best as the place John Freeman went after his long term editing Doctor Who Magazine during and after the end of the Sylvester McCoy era.
Since the magazine will publish at best only four issues before the second series of Torchwood concludes, there is some fan speculation that a third series is made more likely by the announcement.
As reported earlier, initial results of Torchwood's debut on Australia's Network Ten has rated well among viewers—even though it's scheduled opposite Battlestar Galactica on pay TV. This has in part been aided by press coverage which, with the odd exception, has been more interested in writing about the Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies, or socially progressive connections, than in submitting reviews about the series on its own merits.
But surely some of the initial success of the programme has been because of Ten's own initial support of the show. Not only have Ten financed an aggressive print and television ad campaign—which has employed Eve Myles and John Barrowman in new material—but the Torchwood website there is bigger than, say, the current size of the Canadian Broadcasting Company's Doctor Who website. In addition to hosting all the Torchwood Declassified episodes, it's been generating its own unique content.
Top on that list are a couple of fresh interviews with cast members Eve Myles and Naoko Mori.
Meanwhile, the first week of broadcast attracted print coverage of John Barrowman as well as Eve Myles. (Be warned, though, that the Eve Myles interview vaguely spoils elements of Series 2.)

Series 1 of Torchwood may be a distant memory in the UK, but it's still an unknown commodity in much of the English-speaking world. To combat this, the BBC and its worldwide partners are entering a phase of increased publicity.
Fansite TorchwoodTV reported earlier this week that Torchwood will be unveiled to the largest genre convention in the US next month. The San Diego ComicCon, arguably the world's largest comic convention, will feature a panel devoted entirely to Captain Jack and his not-so-merry band. Such treatment is somewhat unusual for British properties, but is a rite of passage for American genre shows. Famously, the movement to get Firefly to return as the movie Serenity was largely buoyed by Joss Whedon's frequent appearances at the ComicCon. But virtually every other major genre show or film—from Star Wars to Heroes—has seen the necessity of energizing the fan base at the convention prior to releasing their product in the American market.
The first five episodes of the Doctor Who spin-off series, Torchwood will be hitting the DVD shelves on Boxing Day (26th of December) next month. Available for pre-order now, it has a MSRP of £24.99, but can be found for £15 to £17. To the best of our knowledge this will be a region 2 PAL 2-disc set. No word on any other releases in other regions at this time.
