    Torchwood

It was one year ago, in October 2005 when mysteriously on the BBC Doctor Who web site that we first saw the Doctor Who logo with the letters rearranged to spell out "Torchwood"... which was the first official public announcement of this new spin-off series being written and produced by Russell T Davies. Starring John Barrowman reprising his role from Doctor Who of the character Captain Jack Harkness. We learned that the new series would focus on a team of investigators targeting extraterrestrial threats here on Earth.

The 2006 series of Doctor Who had been littered with Torchwood references which built momentum not only for what was to come at the conclusion of the 2006 series, but for this new spin-off series as well.

The long wait will be over next week when the new Torchwood series will make its debut on BBC Three at 9pm on Sundays starting on the 22nd of October. The Gallifreyan Embassy and Doctor Who: Podshock will continue our coverage of this new Doctor Who spin-off series as it unfolds here on our site and the podcast. Stay tuned.

The British sci-fi crime thriller for adult audiences will follow the adventures of a team of renegade investigators, led by the enigmatic Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman. It will see the investigators scavenge alien technology in a very real world to solve crime; both alien and human.

    Torchwood

News coming out of Outpost Gallifrey reports that the production of the new Doctor Who spin-off series, Torchwood starring John Barrowman reprising his Captain Jack Harkness character has been delayed. The new series originally scheduled to debut in the summer of 2006, now probably will not start production until that time, which means it will be several months later before it is transmitted on BBC3. The production was to originally begin this month, but after numerous delays it is now looking to be June or July. Furthermore, James Hawes, a producer for the new series had to bow out due to the schedule change.

    BBC Press Release:
Captain Jack to get his own series in new Russell T Davies drama for BBC THREE

Russell T Davies is to write a sci-fi paranoid thriller in a major new drama commission for BBC THREE, it was announced today by Stuart Murphy, Controller of BBC THREE.

Torchwood is a 13-part drama series aimed at a post-watershed audience and has an organic link to Doctor Who.

"Torchwood is a British sci-fi paranoid thriller, a cop show with a sense of humour," says Davies.

"It's dark, wild and sexy, it's the X-Files meets This Life. It's a stand-alone series for adult audiences which will have its own unique identity.

"I have just begun working on the scripts with a team of writers and cannot wait to see the results."

Set in modern-day Cardiff, Torchwood stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack from Doctor Who; it's in the Christmas special and second series of Doctor Who that the story of Torchwood a renegade group of investigators is seeded.

However, no stories will cross over between Torchwood and Doctor Who.

The drama series is produced by BBC Wales and will be transmitted later next year.

    Torchwood

If you visit the BBC - Doctor Who web site tonight, you will be greeted by a logo in the same style as "Doctor Who" but instead it reads "Torchwood" with the further information below it reading "Summer 2006 | BBC Three | Starring John Barrowman | Created by Russell T Davies."

    What is this all about?

Well, it has to be Doctor Who related of course... and if you notice, "Torchwood" is an anagram of "Doctor Who" but what exactly is this production starring John Barrowman on BBC Three in the summer of 2006? Will Barrowman be reprising his role as 'Captain Jack' in a spin-off perhaps?

We'll post more information on this as it becomes available.

    UPDATE:

According to The Independent Online Edition it reports that Torchwood is a new programme commissioned to Russell T Davies by the BBC. The new show is described as consisting of "a crack team investigating alien activities and crime in modern-day Britain."

As speculated above, John Barrowman will be reprising his Captain Jack Harkness character in Torchwood.

The series starting in the summer of 2006 on BBC Three will be 13 episodes, each 45 minutes in length

Read more about it in BBC to screen 'Dr Who for adults' as new spin-off show and the BBC Press Release concerning Torchwood.
