Matt Smith announces he is to leave Doctor Who - UPDATED

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 06/01/2013 - 4:11pm

The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show. Matt first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010 and will leave the role at the end of this year after starring in the unmissable 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas special. During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role.

Matt quickly won over fans to be voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season. He also received a nod for his first series at the National Television Awards, before winning the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012.

Matt has played one of the biggest roles in TV with over 77 million fans in the UK, USA and Australia alone!

Matt Smith says: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says : "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"

Jenna Coleman, adds: "I could not have imagined coming into the show without Matt as my Doctor, holding my hand, really, quite literally. I totally lucked-out in having a creative, generous, clever, and lovely fella to work alongside day after day.

I feel so privileged to have been part of Matt's reign, to have to been companion to what is and what I think always will be one of our greatest Doctors.

He is so in love with the show, he works tirelessly hard, surprises me every day, always creating and discovering something new about the Doctor. A true gent, a leading man and a very special friend.

I know it will be a very difficult goodbye for me, but I for one can't wait to see where his career takes him next.  And of course with the same welcome I was brought in with, I look forward to welcoming the next Doctor. BUT it's not over till it's over. See ya at the big 5-0!"

Having starred alongside three different companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Matt's Doctor has fought Daleks and Cybermen, as well as Weeping Angels in New York. Regularly heard shouting 'run' and 'Geronimo', through Matt's Doctor fans have been introduced to a new culinary combination - fish fingers and custard!

Matt's spectacular exit is yet to be revealed and will be kept tightly under wraps. He will return to BBC One screens in the unmissable 50th anniversary episode on Saturday 23rd November 2013 - TUNE IN!

We’ll have a special video from Matt - coming soon!

Quote of the Day....DOCTOR: Well, well, well. The Rani.
RANI: You were expecting to see the Master?
DOCTOR: To see? Not exactly. He was burnt to a crisp the last time I saw him.
RANI: Your smugness is misplaced. He's here. He's very much alive and he wants vengeance, curse the pair of you.
DOCTOR: Well, since we're insulting each other, I can't say I care much for your taste in clothes. Doesn't do a thing for you.
RANI: Hmm, your regeneration's not too attractive, either. But at least I can change my appearance. You're stuck with what you've got.
DOCTOR: My face is of no importance. Brain regeneration is what I need. I should have been able to pin this one down to you. Personality changes, probably due to an imbalance in body chemicals. Yes, you're the obvious culprit. Well, you had me fooled, if that's any consolation.
RANI: It isn't.

Amongst them is Dr John Smith, a short, middle-aged history teacher from Aberdeen. He’s having a hard time with his new post as house master at Hulton College, a school dedicated to producing military officers.

Bernice Summerfield is enjoying her holiday in the town, getting over the terrible events that befell her in France. Happy Anniversary River Song!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 05/31/2013 - 4:37am

River Song made her first appearance five years ago today, leading an expedition to The Library where she found the Vashta Nerada, Donna Noble… and the Doctor. Although he didn’t have a clue who this charismatic archaeologist was, she certainly knew him, recalling days he had yet to live with an affection that indicated they would become more than just traveling companions.

In the half decade since that first encounter River has appeared in over a dozen episodes and we’ve seen glimpses of her whole incredible life. The troubled childhood where she became one of Kovarian’s pawns; the early Leadworth days with her mum and dad – Amy and Rory; her battles side-by-side with the Eleventh Doctor as together they fought Weeping Angels, the Silence and the Great Intelligence; the romance, the ‘wedding’ and even what the Doctor described as their first date… a jaunt to Berlin with a plan to kill Hitler!

River Song was the brainchild of Steven Moffat who described her as ‘funny, flirtatious [and] mad’. River’s crazier qualities have ensured she’s been a brilliant and unpredictable factor in the Doctor’s adventures but she also has a softer side that must have touched the Time Lord’s hearts.  “When one’s in love with an ageless god who insists on the face of a twelve-year-old,’ she once confided, “one does one’s best to hide the damage,” later telling Amy, “Never ever let him see you age. He doesn’t like endings.”

But today we salute River Song, also known as Melody Pond, also known as Mrs Robinson and frequently known to spread complete and rather wonderful chaos!

We’ve assembled some of our favourite River quotes, unveiled a new gallery devoted to her, created some spot-the-difference puzzles and even created a new quiz so you can find out how much you know about the daring Doctor Song!

And we want to know – which was your favourite River Song adventure? To make your opinion count, go to the homepage and in the section to the lower right-hand side, cast your vote. And if you need reminding about the life and times of River Song, you’ll find information, clips and more about each of her adventures. We’ve listed all her episodes below… Click on any of them to step back in time with River!

Words of the Song...

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 05/31/2013 - 4:00am

One of the many things we love about River is her ability to come up with the right line at the right time… We’ve got a hundred favourite quotes from River but whittled them down to a dozen or so and put a few of our absolute faves below…

You can let us know your favourite lines – either ones we’ve mentioned below or ones which escaped the list by emailing us at thedoctor@bbc.co.uk or by tweeting us @bbcdoctorwho.

‘Hello, sweetie!’
The first words we ever hear River speak to the Doctor, heard first in Silence in the Library.

‘Like I said on the dance floor, you might want to find something to hang on to!’
River, escaping from The Byzantium in The Time of Angels

‘If you like… but where's the fun in that?’
River, replying to the Doctor’s question – can he trust her? - in Flesh and Stone

‘Right, then. I have questions, but number one is this: what in the name of sanity have you got on your head?’
River, spotting the Doctor’s fez in The Big Bang

‘Rule one: the Doctor lies!’
River being blunt in The Big Bang

‘You’ve got a time machine. I've got a gun. What the hell… Let’s kill Hitler!’
River (as ‘Mels’) in Let’s Kill Hitler

‘Right! Let’s see then… Whoa, it's all going on down there, isn't it? The hair! Oh, the hair! It just doesn't stop, does it? Look at that. Everything changes. Oh, but I love it! I love it! I'm all sort of… mature… Hello, Benjamin!
River, immediately post-regeneration in Let’s Kill Hitler

‘New York growled at my window, but I was ready for it!’
River, writing as Melody Malone in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘If it was that easy I’d get you to do it!’
River, talking to the Doctor in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘Never let him see the damage. And never ever let him see you age. He doesn’t like endings.’
River, talking to Amy in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘Whenever and wherever you want, but not all the time. One psychopath per TARDIS, don’t you think?’
River, replying to the Doctor’s request to travel with him in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘I died saving him. In return, he saved me to a database in the biggest library in the universe. Left me like a book on a shelf. Didn’t even say goodbye. He doesn't like endings.’
River to Clara in The Name of the Doctor

‘There’s only one way I’d accept. If you ever loved me, say it like you’re going to come back.’
River, replying to the Doctor’s question of how he should say goodbye in The Name of the Doctor

‘Until the next time, Doctor… Oh, there’s one more thing… Spoilers… Goodbye… sweetie!’
River’s final words to the Doctor in The Name of the Doctor

Quote of the Day....DOCTOR: So where are we now, Doctor Song? How's prison?
RIVER: Oh, I was pardoned ages ago. And it's Professor Song to you.
DOCTOR: Pardoned?
RIVER: Mmm. Turns out the person I killed never existed in the first place. Apparently, there's no record of him. It's almost as if someone's gone around deleting himself from every database in the universe.
DOCTOR: You said I got too big.
RIVER: And now no one's ever heard of you. Didn't you used to be somebody?
DOCTOR: Weren't you the woman who killed the Doctor?
RIVER: Doctor who?

Five Years of Song

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 05/30/2013 - 7:00am

Tomorrow - Friday, 31 May, 2013 - is the fifth anniversary of River Song’s very first appearance in Doctor Who. The buccaneering archaeologist made her debut in Silence in the Library, crashing into the Doctor’s life with a flirtatious smile and a soon-to-be trademark, ‘Hello, sweetie!’

And so tomorrow we celebrate half a decade of River. We’ll have a special quiz that we promise not to call ‘name that Song’ plus wallpapers, some of our favourite River quotes, exclusive ‘spot the difference’ games, a new gallery and more.

Don’t forget, BBC iPlayer users can still catch River’s most recent appearance in The Name of the Doctor and if you want to get ready for tomorrow, why not download one of our new River Song wallpapers now?

#RiverSongDay – celebrated right here and on twitter @bbcdoctorwho tomorrow!

Quote of the Day....DOCTOR: Before you start, there is something I wanted to ask you about that's been worrying me. It's the executions.
KANDYMAN: What about them?
DOCTOR: Well, out there, people don't seem to know what method you use. I was intrigued.
KANDYMAN: I didn't realise you were conceding an interest in the mechanics of execution, Doctor. A man after my own soft centre.
DOCTOR: I was just curious.
KANDYMAN: The secret's in the pipes. Vanilla secret tomorrow night, I think. Just when the victim thinks he's been pardoned it flows into the yard and smothers him. It's ingenious, isn't it.
DOCTOR: Depraved.
KANDYMAN: We call it Fondant Surprise.

Quote of the Day....CLARA: Where are we?
DOCTOR: Catacombs.
CLARA: I hate catacombs. So how come I met your dead wife?
DOCTOR: Oh well, you know how it is when you lose someone close to you. I sort of made a back-up.
RIVER: I died saving him. In return, he saved me to a database in the biggest library in the universe. Left me like a book on a shelf. Didn't even say goodbye. He doesn't like endings.
DOCTOR: Clara, come on! Run, run!

Latest Awards News

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 05/21/2013 - 7:32am

Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat arrived at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York yesterday (Monday 20 May) to pick up an Institutional Peabody Award for Doctor Who.  But that's not the only good news on the awards front - Doctor Who has also been nominated in the Best Drama Series category in the TVChoice Awards 2013.

The prestigious George Foster Peabody Awards celebrate excellence in radio and television broadcasting and is one of the highest honours in television. The awarding committee described the show as:

"Seemingly immortal, 50-years-old and still running, this engaging, imaginative sci-fi/fantasy series is awarded an Institutional Peabody for evolving with technology and the times like nothing else in the known television universe"

The Peabody Award is voted for by a panel of distinguished academics, television critics, industry practitioners and experts in culture and the arts. The TVChoice awards are voted for by you, the audience. Now in its 17th year honouring TV's most popular stars and shows, you can back your favourites by voting online or via the magazine forms.

The TV Choice Awards will take place on Monday 9 September so hopefully Matt and Jenna will have another trophy to pick up! Good luck to all the nominees!

Quote of the Day....DOCTOR: From the beginning, she was impossible. The impossible girl. I met her in the Dalek Asylum. Never saw her face, and she died. I met her again in Victorian London, and she died. Saved my life both times, by giving her own. But now she's back and we're running together, and she's perfect. Perfect in every way for me. A Message from Steven Moffat

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 2:57pm

A little earlier, Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, gave this thank you message…

Well that was all a bit Keystone Cops, wasn't it? Our biggest surprise, our most secret episode, a revelation about the Doctor that changes everything...

... and we'd have got away with it too, if we hadn't accidentally sent Blu Ray copies of Name Of The Doctor to 210 Doctor Who fans in America.

Erm - security-wise, that's not GOOD, is it? I mean, it's not top notch, it's hard to defend as professional level, hard-line secrecy.

My favourite fact is that they're BLU RAYS. Listen, we don't just leak any old rubbish, we leak in high def. 1080p or nothing, that's us. Every last pixel in beautifully rendered detail. It's like getting caught extra naked.

But here's the thing. Never mind us blundering fools, check out the fans. 210 of them, with the top secret episode in their grasp - and because we asked nicely, they didn't breathe a word. Not one. Even Doctor Who websites have been closing their comments sections, just in case anyone blurts. I'm gobsmacked. I'm impressed. Actually, I'm humbled. And we are all very grateful.

Now you might be thinking, what does all this matter? It's a plot development in the mad old fantasy world of Doctor Who, why is that important? Well of course, it's not important, and in the scheme of things, it doesn't matter at all. Just as it doesn't matter when you're telling a joke, and some idiot shouts out the punchline before you finish. It's irritating, that's all. It's bad manners.

Well no bad manners here! 210 Doctor Who fans kept the secret, and many, many more fans helped. I wish I could send you all flowers, but I don't know where you live (and given our record, you really shouldn't be sharing private information with us.) So instead, if we can get our act together - and I forgive you for thinking that's a BIG if - there will be a little video treat released later tonight.

10 plus 11 gives you…

That video is available to watch now!

Doctor Who: A New Series and More

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 1:45pm

We’re delighted to confirm a new series of Doctor Who has been commissioned and the show’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, has revealed he’s already plotting a brand new run of adventures for the Doctor.

But way before that hits our screens we have a huge amount to look forward to. Your calendars should already have a big red circle around 23 November because that’s when the TARDIS returns in the frankly Earth-shattering adventure that celebrates half a century of Doctor Who. This 3D special stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman with David Tennant and John Hurt, seen briefly at the end of The Name of the Doctor. Billie Piper returns alongside Jemma Redgrave, Joanna Page… and the Zygons!

If you can’t wait until then you can see special videos about the special – filming at the Tower of London and in Trafalgar Square. We’ve a new gallery for the 50th plus a news item on the cast.

Later this year the BBC also premieres An Adventure in Space and Time, the brilliant drama written by Mark Gatiss that looks at the genesis of Doctor Who. If this video location report is anything to go by, we’re in for a memorable insight into the show’s origins.

And given that this year’s Christmas Special will be rounding off such a spectacular year we’re sure it will kick off the Doctor’s next half century in style!  But that’s not all. Big plans are being put in place that will well and truly celebrate the Doctor’s half-centenary.  Make sure you check back for some exciting announcements!

In the meantime, this site will be updating regularly, bringing you the latest news, videos and much more. No-one should ever have to go a day without watching Doctor Who and you don’t need to! Check out the clips section where you’ll find a wealth of great moments from the show’s first 50 years. And if you fancy finding out more about the earliest Doctors, now’s your chance with A Beginner’s Guide to the Doctors.

Finally, don’t forget, you can stay one step ahead by following us on twitter - @bbcdoctorwho

A Beginner’s Guide to the Doctors

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 05/18/2013 - 1:43pm

As the Doctor himself said on Trenzalore, he’s had loads of bodies. That’s because the Doctor is a Time Lord, and Time Lords have the ability to regenerate their bodies when they’re worn out or dying. This means that his old body transforms into a new one, along with a new appearance and persona – a brand new Doctor! But underneath these surface changes, he’s still the same man, the same hero and adventurer.

The series finale gave us glimpses of many Doctors, including the very first - that was the white-haired figure that Clara spoke to at the beginning of the episode. We saw the ‘impossible girl’ interrupt him as he was about to steal a TARDIS, advising him to take the time machine that he still travels in today. The Second Doctor was the man wearing a big, furry coat and the Third was behind the wheel of his trusty old car, Bessie. It’s clear that every Doctor has a distinctive look – tall and handsome, short and impish, old, young… All different! But what’s more exciting is their unique personalities and eccentricities - you can read more by following the links below. You’ll see that the Doctor has always been a hero, but in different ways in different times.

The guide below shows the Doctors - click on any of them and you’ll be taken to a page that gives you the low down on that particular Doctor. What they were like, who they travelled with and what caused them to regenerate. If you want to find out more, simply follow the links to their stories and you’ll discover some brilliant clips from their adventures, galleries, fact files and much more. We’ll be adding much more in the coming months, but for now, here’s a guide to the greatest hero of them all: The Doctor.
