The jury who vote for the awards comprises hundreds of media executives from around the world and nominees are also drawn from across the globe. So it’s particularly fitting for the show to win the awards in the week that it’s announced that a Doctor Who World Tour will begin this August.

Doctor Who to Begin World Tour in Cardiff and London this August

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 06/10/2014 - 11:05am

Following on from the huge success of The Day of The Doctor, the 50th anniversary special that was watched by over 12 million viewers across BBC One and BBC iPlayer, anticipation is building for the arrival of the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, who will touchdown in the TARDIS this August on BBC One.

Fans in the United Kingdom will have a chance to see Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in exclusive events in Cardiff and London on the 7th August before they jet off on a world tour to promote the show.

Peter Capaldi, speaking ahead of the tour said: “It’s fantastic that so many people across the world love Doctor Who. After 8 months solid filming deep in the world of monsters, Jenna and I are thrilled to be heading for the Planet of Fans.”

Executive Producer and Lead Writer Steven Moffat added: I’ve always thought we'd all be a lot safer if the Doctor conquered the world, instead of the Daleks. Now with Jenna and Peter leading the charge, it looks like it's going to happen. I'll be bringing up the rear to handle the exposition scenes, and maybe carry some bags.”

Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director BBC Cymru Wales said: "Where better to start the World Tour than the Doctor's home for the last decade? The sight of the TARDIS and marauding aliens is now a familiar part of Welsh life - though they still scare the life out of the traffic wardens. There is a real sense of excitement and anticipation about the new series – and I know Peter and Jenna are going to be a breath-taking new team. Roll on August!"

Filming is well underway on the new series, with guest stars confirmed to join Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman including Frank Skinner, Ben Miller, Tom Riley, Keeley Hawes and Hermione Norris.

Doctor Who is made by BBC Cymru Wales.

Steven Moffat Discusses Peter Capaldi and the New Series

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 05/30/2014 - 3:56am

Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, recently appeared at the Hay Festival and discussed the new series and how Peter Capaldi became the Doctor.

He also touched on the process of casting Peter Capaldi and revealed, ‘To keep it completely secret I got him around to my house and we auditioned him there… I wrote these daft little scenes for him. And he carried them off. And, of course, he was brilliant, because he’s Peter Capaldi and he’s always brilliant!’

He also offered a tantalising glimpse into what we have to look forward to in the new series, commenting, ‘We haven’t made much of change to Doctor Who since it came back in 2005… I just felt it needs to be a bit more different now. It’s needs to be surprising again!’

You can find out more in this clip from his fascinating interview.

The new Doctor lands on BBC One in August, 2014 and you can watch the latest ‘teaser trailer’ now!

Frank Skinner to Appear in New Series of Doctor Who

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 05/16/2014 - 6:56am

We’re delighted to confirm that the BBC has issued the following press release:

Comedian and TV host Frank Skinner to guest star in the new series of Doctor Who…

Room 101 host Frank Skinner is the latest name confirmed to guest star in an episode of the new series of Doctor Who this Autumn.

Skinner says: “I love this show. I subscribe to Doctor Who magazine, I’ve got a TARDIS ringtone, a five-foot cardboard Dalek in my bedroom and when I got the call saying they wanted me to read for the part, I was in the back of my tour bus watching episode three of The Sensorites. I am beyond excited.”

He is currently touring the UK with his stand-up show Frank Skinner: Man In a Suit, alongside presenting the Saturday Morning Breakfast Show on Absolute Radio. Skinner previously appeared in the one-off Doctor Who 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, says: “It's no secret that Frank’s been pitching vigorously to get into Doctor Who for a while. He’s been volunteering to be “third monster on the left” as long as I’ve been in this job. But now, in Jamie Mathieson’s sparkling script, we finally have a part that can showcase all of Frank’s famous wit and charm. Hopefully he’ll get out of my garden now.”

The episode is written by Jamie Mathieson (Being Human, Dirk Gently), directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids), and also stars David Bamber, Daisy Beaumont, Janet Henfrey and Christopher Villiers.

Other guest stars confirmed to join Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the new series, which will air on BBC One this Autumn, include Ben Miller, Tom Riley, Keeley Hawes and Hermione Norris.

Hermione Norris to Guest Star in New Series

BBC - Doctor Who - Sun, 05/11/2014 - 4:58pm

The BBC has issued the following press release:

Hermione Norris to guest star in Doctor Who opposite Peter Capaldi when Doctor Who returns this Autumn.

Speaking about her casting, Hermione Norris said, ‘It’s exciting to be part of such an iconic show, and one that my kids can watch!!!’

Norris has recently been starring in The Crimson Field on BBC One, and is no stranger to solving mysteries having played Ros Myers in the BAFTA award-winning drama Spooks. Prior to that she starred in comedy-drama Cold Feet.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, said, ‘It's a testament to the quality of Peter Harness's intense and emotional script, that we've been able to attract an actress of the brilliance of Hermione Norris. And for the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote. The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure - but there have been sinister changes since his last visit.’

The episode is written by Peter Harness (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Wallander), produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids). The episode also stars Ellis George, Tony Osoba and Phil Nice.

Other guest stars confirmed to join Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the new series, which will TX on BBC One later this year, include Ben Miller, Tom Riley and Keeley Hawes.

Multiple Hugo Award Nominations for the Doctor!

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 04/19/2014 - 3:23pm

The Name of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor and The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot have all been nominated for this year’s Hugo Awards.

All three have been nominated in the ‘Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form’ category and the winners will be announced on 17 August at the 2014 Hugo Awards ceremony. The Name of the Doctor was written by Steven Moffat and directed by Saul Metzstein and The Day of the Doctor, also penned by Steven Moffat, was directed by Nick Hurran. The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot was written and directed by Peter Davison and featured a number of well-known faces from the world of Doctor Who including Steven Moffat, several former Doctors and Jenna Coleman.

Commenting on the nominations, Doctor Who’s head writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, said, ‘For Doctor Who to receive four Hugo nominations in its anniversary year is completely thrilling. We are all over the moon. I’m particularly pleased about The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot as that was my acting debut. I remain available for any parts requiring a black jumper and slightly unrealistic hair.’

We’re also delighted that An Adventure in Space and Time – the one-off drama written by Mark Gatiss that examined the origins of Doctor Who - also received a nomination in the ‘Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form’ category. And ‘The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who’, written by Paul Cornell and illustrated by Jimmy Broxton, was nominated in the Best Graphic Story field.

The prestigious Hugo Awards, presented annually since 1955, are named after Hugo Gernsback, founder of the influential science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories. Best of luck to all this year’s nominees!
