New BBC 360° mobile game lets Doctor Who fans pilot the TARDIS through the vortex

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 05/17/2017 - 4:00am

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14982048040644","pid":"p053062b","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p053062b\/player"}}); });

Doctor Who fans can pilot the TARDIS on its most exhilarating journey yet as it careers through the depths of the space time vortex in the BBC’s first ever 360 arcade game, Doctor Who Time Vortex 360.

Fans simply need to visit the BBC Taster site using their smartphone or tablet and by physically moving their mobile device through 360 degrees, they will be able to fly the TARDIS within an increasingly turbulent time vortex.

As they speed through time, players will tackle hazards and obstacles emerging from the future ahead of them, but in a unique and literal twist will sometimes need to physically turn themselves to look backwards in time in order to evade threats emerging from the past.

Jo Pearce, creative director, BBC Digital Drama, said: “The beauty of this game is that you can use your mobile phone to fly the TARDIS wherever you are. Digital innovation is at the very heart of Doctor Who – this 360 degree game allows people to navigate the TARDIS through time and space like never before.

“We’ve seen a lot of innovation recently in the 360 and virtual reality space, but the majority has focused on ‘experiential’ video-based experiences. This game, however, brings together the worlds of casual, arcade-style gaming and 360/VR to create a fun Doctor Who experience that people can easily pick up and play, wherever they are.”

The game is an endless runner, which gets more and more difficult the longer people play, taking them on a visually intense journey through the iconic vortex from the show's opening credits. Using the device's accelerometer, the game is controlled by physically moving around, even giving the player the ability to turn around and travel backwards in time.

Designed as a mobile-first experience for the BBC by Goodboy Digital, the game combines cutting edge HTML5 and WebGL using PixiJS v5.0 to create a breath-taking journey that works on a wide range of hardware.

The game is available to play on BBC Taster, where fans can rate the game and provide feedback.

John Simm to return as the Master in Doctor Who

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 04/06/2017 - 10:45am

John Simm will return as the Master to battle the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), new companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) and Nardole (Matt Lucas) in the forthcoming series of Doctor Who.

John Simm says: “I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series. “

Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer, says: "Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you'll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what the Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash."

John Simm was last seen as the Master on New Year’s Day 2010. Viewers will have to wait to see exactly when and how the Master will return to the new series, which starts on Saturday 15 April at 7:20pm on BBC One.

As previously announced, Doctor Who series 10 will also star Michelle Gomez as Missy – a later regeneration of the Master. Other returning foes include the Daleks, the Ice Warriors and – returning for the first time in over 50 years – the Mondasian Cybermen. An exciting line up of new faces and adversaries will debut across the series, including adorable-but-deadly Emojibots and David Suchet as the Landlord.

Doctor Who returns to BBC One with episode one The Pilot at 7:20pm on Saturday 15 April.

Let’s Talk Trailer!

BBC - Doctor Who - Mon, 03/13/2017 - 4:05pm

What did the latest trailer tell us about the new series..? What were our fave bits and what questions did it have us asking..?

1. The new series is going to rock. Yep, we’re getting that one out of the way from the get go. It’s packed with humour, action and all the usual Doctor-y goodness we expect from our favourite Time Lord!

2. Bill likes to get involved, ask questions… But will it be a non-stop fun ride? In an earlier trailer we heard the Doctor’s new companion say, ‘I wouldn't miss it for the world, even if it kills me.’ And here we see her having the time of her life, but judging from the shot of her looking all teary, there’s also sadness in store…

3. We already knew the Daleks were back but in a teasery twist we see a female humanoid saying, ‘Exterminate!’ What’s that about?

4. Missy = so fine. We got our first glimpse of Michelle Gomez as Missy in the new series and yes, it was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment but yes, it’s got us amped for the return of the ‘Queen of Evil’!

5. Nardole… We love Matt Lucas’ character and we were over the moon(base) when it was announced he was a big part of the new series. Inevitably, his bits in the trailer brought smiles to our faces…

6. Talking of smiles… Well, sort of. Smilies. Emoticons… It’s a new robot! Bill claims it speaks emoji. Intriguing…

7. And how cool is this new look Ice Warrior? (Pun intended.)

8. We knew the Mondasian Cybermen were returning but every time we see them they get creepier. This latest look at the Doctor’s old foes was a great reminder of just how chilling they can be…

9. The Doctor seems to be having a high old time! This makes us happy. Just does. To quote his words from the trailer: ‘Bring it!’

10. Bill and Nardole’s excellent adventure with the Doctor begins on Saturday, April 15th with ‘The Pilot’, the opening episode of the new series. Cannot. Wait!

What were your fave bits of the trailer and what questions did it have you asking? Join the debate on Twitter using #TimeForHeroes to get involved!
