Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who Costume Revealed in First Look Picture

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 01/29/2014 - 4:46am

The BBC has released the first picture of Peter Capaldi wearing the new Doctor’s costume (above) along with a press release that reads:

The Doctor has a new look as Peter Capaldi’s era officially begins.  In a picture released today by the BBC, Capaldi can be seen in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord in one of TV’s biggest roles.  Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as sturdy, black shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

Commenting on his costume, Peter Capaldi said: “He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”  While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

Filming for episode one of series 8 began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi’s Doctor.  Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commented: "Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume.  It's sharp, smart and stylish - The Twelfth Time Lord means business."

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

Tom Baker at 80: The Tom Baker Story

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 01/22/2014 - 5:53am

Thomas ‘Tom’ Stewart Baker was born in Liverpool on 20 January, 1934. He left school aged 15 to become a monk, throwing off his cowl in his early twenties and later completing his national service in the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving from 1955 until 1957. Tom’s interest in acting burgeoned when he took part in the medical corps’ amateur dramatics and following his demob he enrolled at drama school. After treading the boards in hits including Dial M for Murder and Hay Fever, Tom joined the National Theatre in 1968 and starred alongside such greats as Laurence Olivier in The Merchant of Venice and Derek Jacobi (later the Master in Utopia) in The Idiot.

He soon branched out into film and TV work and received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the 1971 movie, Nicholas and Alexandra. Other early roles included an eccentric doctor(!) in the BBC’s version of The Millionairess (see image below) and Koura in the big screen epic, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.

After Jon Pertwee announced he was leaving Doctor Who, the search for the Fourth Doctor began. The BBC’s then Head of Serials, Bill Slater, who had directed Tom in The Millionairess, contacted Doctor Who’s producer, Barry Letts, recommending him for the role of the Time Lord. When Letts saw The Golden Voyage of Sinbad he was convinced that he had found the perfect replacement for Jon Pertwee and so, on the evening of 8 June 1974, the Third Doctor, riddled with radiation, stumbled out of the TARDIS and began to regenerate… Moments later (image below) the world was introduced to Tom Baker as the Doctor!

Tom Baker’s Doctor was brimming with bohemian swagger and during his first full episode as the Time Lord he donned a battered hat and a long coloured scarf – elements that would become part of Doctor Who’s iconography. His Doctor could be at times funny, charming and insensitive. His farewell to long-time companion Leela was a master class in apparent apathy but his gentle words, ‘I’ll miss you too, savage…’, spoken only after she could no longer hear him, indicated he had his hearts in the right place.

But for all his humour and heroism, there was another side to the Fourth Doctor, as Steven Moffat - Doctor Who’s Executive Producer and lead writer - recently commented: ‘I was terribly taken with him but slightly frightened of him…  We misremember Tom Baker’s Doctor. He was very funny, very charming but you never knew what the hell was going on behind those terrifying eyes!’

Tom Baker hung up his scarf after seven hugely successful seasons and on 21 March, 1981 the Fourth Doctor regenerated… Away from the world of Doctor Who Tom enjoyed a number of stage successes with roles varying from Long John Silver in Treasure Island, Frank in Educating Rita and Judge Brack in Hedda Gabler. His television work included regular stints on Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), Medics and The Silver Chair adaptation from The Chronicles of Narnia (see image below). He also appeared in Douglas Adams’ Hyperland, an episode of Blackadder II and from 2003-2006 he was the narrator voice of the sketch show Little Britain.

Tom had a cameo playing the Doctor in Dimensions in Time (1993) and went on to delight fans with appearances at conventions, always happy to recount amusing anecdotes based on his time in the TARDIS. In 2013 he returned to Doctor Who in The Day of the Doctor – you can watch the scene now! Tom’s appearance came towards the end of the adventure and for many it proved to be one of the highlights of the 50th anniversary celebrations.

So… What lies ahead for one of the most popular Doctors ever? To quote Tom Baker’s final words in The Day of the Doctor, ‘Who knows, eh? Who knows?’

Roger Lloyd-Pack (1944 – 2014)

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 01/16/2014 - 10:31am

We're sad to report that Roger Lloyd-Pack, who played John Lumic in two episodes of Doctor Who, has died aged 69.

Roger was best known in the UK as Trigger, the dim-witted friend of the Trotters in the BBC sitcom, Only Fools and Horses. He was also a regular in The Vicar of Dibley and starred in a number of movies, notably playing Barty Crouch Snr in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

But Doctor Who fans will always remember him for his role of John Lumic, the ruthless creator of the ‘new’ Cybermen when they returned to our screens in 2006. He played Lumic in Rise of the Cybermen and The Age of Steel, providing a memorably chilling opponent for the Tenth Doctor.

You can read Roger Lloyd-Pack’s obituary at BBC News online.

Phil Ford On Board

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 01/08/2014 - 12:04pm

We revealed yesterday that Phil Ford is writing the second episode of the new series of Doctor Who. Although we can’t reveal anything about that adventure just yet, we are able to look back on the other stories he’s written for the Time Lord and his friends…

Back in 2009 he wrote The Waters of Mars with Russell T Davies. This 60-minute special featuring the Tenth Doctor won the 2010 Hugo Award in the category of Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. Around the same time he also wrote the animated adventure, Dreamland, again featuring the Tenth Doctor played by David Tennant. Other familiar figures in the recording booth, lending their vocal talent to the six-parter included Georgia Moffett (Jenny in The Doctor’s Daughter), David Warner (Professor Grisenko in Cold War) and Stuart Milligan (Nixon in The Impossible Astronaut). If you missed Dreamland, you can still watch it now!

Phil Ford was also the lead writer for the Doctor Who: The Adventure Games and wrote City of the Daleks, Blood of the Cybermen, Shadows of the Vashta Nerada and the epic The Gunpowder Plot. You can play any of these games right now, or simply explore the worlds they inhabit in a series of interviews, galleries and fact files.

Phil has also written many stories for The Sarah Jane Adventures, including the brilliant The Curse of Clyde Langer which scooped the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain’s ‘Best Children’s TV Script Award’, 2012. More recently he co-created - and has written many episodes of - the CBBC hit, Wizards Vs Aliens.

His other writing credits include Coronation Street, Torchwood and Captain Scarlet. His latest adventure for Doctor Who will be directed by Ben Wheatley and stars, of course, Peter Capaldi as the Doctor!

Doctor Who: NTA Nominations

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 9:56am

The final round of voting has opened for this year’s National Television Awards and Doctor Who is represented in two categories.

Matt Smith is through to the final four in the ‘Drama Performance’ category, nominated, of course, for his role as the Doctor, having played the Time Lord from 2010 until last month when his Doctor bowed out in the poignant Christmas Special.

Doctor Who is nominated in the ‘Drama’ category where it faces stiff competition from other shows.

To find out more or to vote for your favourites, visit the National Television Awards homepage.

But be quick! Voting closes at midday on 22 January, 2014 and the awards ceremony, hosted by Dermot O’Leary, takes place that evening in London.

Peter Capaldi begins filming on Doctor Who

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 01/07/2014 - 8:09am

Peter Capaldi, on set today in the costume of the Eleventh Doctor, with Jenna Coleman.

The BBC has issued the following press release:

The new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, stepped on set today for his first full day of filming as production begins on series 8 of the hit BBC show.

10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first glimpse of Capaldi in one of TV’s most iconic roles in the festive special ‘The Time of the Doctor’, which saw Matt Smith hang-up his bow tie after 4 years in the role.

Capaldi was revealed as the Doctor in a live BBC One show in August, after months of speculation about the next Doctor’s identity.

Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi said:

“New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added:

“First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.”

Accompanying the Doctor on his adventures will be companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman.

The first episode of series 8 has been written by Steven Moffat with the second episode penned by Phil Ford.  These are the first episodes that Peter will shoot and are directed by Ben Wheatley

Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said:

"Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the journey to start."

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One, commented:

"A new year, a new face, a new Doctor! 2014 has arrived and it's Peter Capaldi's time so let the adventures begin!"

Filming is taking place in Cardiff until August 2014.  Doctor Who is executive produced by Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin, and produced by Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett.  It is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

Watch the moment the Eleventh Doctor regenerated and the new Doctor’s era began…
