You voted in your thousands and we had a runaway winner for your favourite moment of the Eleventh Doctor’s era… It was the final scene of The Day of the Doctor where the Eleventh Doctor gives a moving voice-over whilst onscreen he joins the former Doctors.
‘A brilliant way to end a brilliant episode!’ Paul enthused when he nominated the scene. ‘Matt Smith’s closing speech is beautifully delivered and the look on his face when he joins his former selves and looks toward his long-lost home planet was fantastic!’
Only two or three percent separated the next batch of your favourite Matt moments with scenes from Vincent and the Doctor, The Rings of Akhaten, The Pandorica Opens and The Eleventh Hour proving phenomenally popular.
Many thanks to everyone who voted!

Here’s another video from the floor of the PDN PhotoPlus Expo in NYC in 2012. This one is a demonstration of the modular camera flash system, the SpinLight 360. As with the previous demonstration video from this show that I had recently posted, it had been delayed for release due to the ongoing recovery efforts after Superstorm Sandy here. The video was shot entirely with an iPhone 4 using the AR-4i (which I’ve concluded it doesn’t get along well with iOS 7 from my experience here now shooting the intro for the demo).

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 12/21/2013 - 6:34am
Today we celebrate 50 years of the Doctor’s ultimate enemies: the Daleks. The Time Lord – along with the audience at home - only saw them ‘properly’ for the first time on 28 December, 1963, but half a century ago today, the first Dalek adventure began…
On 21 December, 1963, the Doctor and his companions stepped from the TARDIS to explore the first alien world featured on Doctor Who. The planet was Skaro, home of the Daleks and at the close of that evening’s episode we got our very first glimpse of the Doctor’s future foes as one approached schoolteacher Barbara Wright (see the image above). She screamed and that scary moment is said to have sent children scurrying behind the sofa… Half a century later the malevolent mutants remain scary but celebrated – still menacing innocent humans and locked in a series of bitter battles with the Doctor. They continue to be his perfect nemesis and despite our familiarity with the Daleks, they thankfully retain the power to send us looking for refuge behind the sofa!
The Daleks were an instant success, triggering what was dubbed ‘Dalekmania’ when they first appeared in 1963. They returned again and again throughout the First Doctor’s era, first invading Earth in the near future before discovering the power of time travel and spreading terror throughout history. Their technology meant Daleks could feature in a broad variety of stories, turning up on the Mary Celeste in 1872 or collaborating with the Master on distant worlds in the 26th century. We encountered them in their all-conquering pomp and then later, when they were losing a war to the Movellans and forced to search for their creator…
When Doctor Who returned in 2005 the Daleks became an even more significant part of the Doctor’s story. It transpired they had fought a war with the Doctor’s own people and apparently, he had been forced to wipe out Time Lords and Daleks in a bid to end the conflict. It soon emerged the Daleks had survived and their feud with the ‘Predator of the Daleks’ continues, with battle recommencing on Christmas Day when the Doctor faces them once more in The Time of the Doctor…
To help celebrate 50 years of Daleks, we’ve released two new videos with Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat looking back on two of their most memorable early adventures – Genesis of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks.
If you want to find out more about the Daleks’ real-life origins, you can start with the fascinating story of their creator, Terry Nation, or discover how they developed their distinctive look which was designed by Raymond Cusick.
And although we would never wish to appear disloyal to the Doctor, after 50 years of frights, delights and brilliant adventures, we do want say one thing: Happy birthday, Daleks!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 12/20/2013 - 6:41am
We’ve received and read your feedback and have now opened the voting for you to choose your favourite ‘Matt moment’!
Last week we asked for your favourite scene or exchange from the Eleventh Doctor’s era. In other words, we wanted to know your favourite ‘Matt moment’! We’re delighted and grateful we received such an avalanche of replies with so many of you contacting us with your most cherished Doctor Who memories from 2010 onwards.
We had to narrow the many suggestions down to just 11, selecting nominations by looking at the numbers of people opting for certain scenes and the passion expressed for those moments. You can vote now for your favourite moment of the Eleventh Doctor’s era and the complete list of nominations (presented in the order in which they were broadcast), together with some of your feedback is below…
1. The Eleventh Hour – Fish fingers and custard
One of the Eleventh Doctor’s earliest scenes touched the hearts of many people. ‘Thanks Matt! We loved all of the stories when you were the Doctor,’ Abi and Jess told us, ‘But especially Fish Fingers and Custard with little Amelia Pond. We will miss you…’
2. The Eleventh Hour – ‘Hello, I’m the Doctor…’
It was the moment we first saw the bow tie and the Eleventh Doctor basically being very cool as he confronted the Atraxi. Lee summed up the feelings of many people when he wrote, ‘My favourite moment of Matt’s is from "The Eleventh Hour". Right after it shows the hologram images of the ten previous Doctors and then Matt steps through the image and introduces himself with "Hello, I'm the Doctor… Basically, run." That's when I knew I was really going to like Matt!’
3. Vincent and the Doctor – The Doctor shows Vincent his legacy.
Hard not to get misty-eyed just thinking about the scene where the Doctor takes Vincent van Gogh to the Musée d'Orsay and reveals the impact his friend really made on the world. Evelyne was one of many who got in touch to say, ‘My favourite Matt Moment was during Vincent and the Doctor, series 5. I cried so much when the Doctor brought Vincent to the Musée d'Orsay and showed him that everything Vincent did and painted really was worth it. It was so moving.’
4. The Pandorica Opens – The Doctor’s monologue
The Eleventh Doctor’s first season delivered an epic finale with The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang and the Doctor’s speech towards the end of the first of those episodes got the nod from many! ‘Matt’s best moment is unquestionably the speech he makes to the assembled armies that come to claim the Pandorica. It borders on epic… Sends a shiver down the spine every time I hear it,’ Ian said, adding, ‘And a big shout out to Murray Gold who scores the moment perfectly!
5. The Doctor’s Wife – saying goodbye to the TARDIS in her humanoid form…
So many people nominated this moment but told us they wept when watching it! It is, of course, the scene where the Doctor has one last exchange with the TARDIS while she is in humanoid form. ‘I would have to say that my absolute favourite "Matt Moment" was his final verbal interaction with Idris/the TARDIS at the end of The Doctor's Wife,’ Lancie declared. ‘It's just a beautiful moment, and if I'm completely honest, I can't watch the scene without tearing up.’
6. A Good Man Goes to War
It was an episode packed with adventure and action, but in the end, the moment that made it as a nomination was the scene in which the Doctor finally discovers River’s ‘true’ identity… As Séverine put it, ‘I will choose… when he finally discovers who River is. No words, only strange noises, messy moves, and this huge joy on both the Doctor and River’s faces. And us, behind the screen, we see it is the moment, but we still don't understand. I couldn't stand still. It was unforgettable, a great moment in the Doctor’s story and a great Matt performance, all in emotion. My favourite one!’
7. The Angels Take Manhattan – The Doctor Reads Amy’s Message
The episode that saw the Ponds make their farewell was a firm favourite and many people selected a touching scene as their Matt moment… The scene that made it through to the final 11 comes towards the end of the adventure, where the Doctor realises Amy has left him a message. He races back to New York and reads her final words to him… Aleana called the episode ‘adventurous and scary’, admitting, ‘I cry every time I hear Amy’s letter to him [the Doctor].’
8. The Bells of Saint John – The Conversation with the Doctor Looking Up at Clara
It was sweet and strangely moving scene, and the choice of a great many people. Which one? Amanda described it: ‘There were a lot of great moments with Matt, but I think my favourite one was when he's talking to Clara in 'The Bells of Saint John' while she's hanging out her window and he’s telling her what she missed while she was asleep, that he's guarding her… and then he gets all excited that he invented the quadracycle!’
9. The Rings of Akhaten – The Doctor’s Speech
Many people felt that the Time Lord’s glorious speech at the end of this episode ran rings (of Akhaten) around other moments in the Eleventh Doctor’s era. Fraser was eloquent in his assessment: ‘I think the best moment featuring Matt Smith in Doctor Who has got to be his brilliant, tear-jerking speech in The Rings of Akhaten. It was a brilliant piece of writing and one of the best moments not only for the Eleventh Doctor, but for the whole series and it will be very sad to see him go in this year’s Christmas special.’
10. Nightmare in Silver – Matt as the Doctor and ‘Mr Clever’.
This is more a ‘double-Matt moment’ and a scene that many people selected as their fave! Jeanette wrote, ‘Matt Smith has taken my breath away with his portrayal of the Doctor, just at Patrick Troughton did all those years ago. If I had to pick a [favourite] moment, however, it would be the scene from Nightmare in Silver where he was both the Doctor and the Cyber Controller. The ‘quick-change’ between the characters was amazing and I just can't imagine anyone else pulling it off so spectacularly! Well done Matt – you are a star! I will miss you.’
11. The Day of the Doctor – the Eleventh Doctor’s closing speech
The closing seconds of the 50th anniversary special provided an iconic moment in Doctor Who… and the final nomination. Jacob summed up many people’s thoughts… ‘[The closing seconds form] my favourite Matt moment because even though all of the Doctors are in this scene, it is Matt's Doctor who is saying the lines and is his incarnation of the Doctor that finally works out that he is going home.... Also, [it’s] how Matt said the lines and how he walked with all the pride in the universe to stand with all of his other previous regenerations on the cloud which made me cry with happiness... I went into full on cry mode when he said that he was going home. Even though the Doctor is a fictional character I am so happy for him that he is going home. That is my favourite Matt moment. May Doctor Who continue into the future and beyond for another glorious 50 years!’
So, those are the nominations, vote for your favourite ‘Matt moment’ now!

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 12/11/2013 - 7:01pm
The Eleventh Doctor’s final adventure - The Time of the Doctor – is on BBC One on Christmas Day at 7.30pm.
In the interviews below, its writer – Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat – and its stars, Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Orla Brady share their thoughts about the story, filming the special and saying farewell to the Eleventh Doctor…
AN INTERVIEW WITH STEVEN MOFFAT
Question: Can you set the scene for this Christmas episode?
Steven Moffat: It’s his final battle and he’s been fighting it for a while. The Doctor is facing the joint challenge of a mysterious event in space that has summoned lots of aliens to one place and helping Clara cook Christmas dinner. There are also elements from every series of Matt’s Doctor, which will come to a head in this special. Things that we’ve laid down for years are going to be paid off.
Q: How was the read-through?
SM: It was emotional. I think possibly the beginning of the end is more emotional than the actual end. It was the same with ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’, when Karen and Arthur left. The read-throughs are the moments that tend to get people because obviously the shoot dissolves into what we hope will be a tremendously exciting wrap party.
Q: Did you know what you wanted Matt’s last words to be?
SM: I didn’t think I would go that way, but a couple of months before I wrote it I did say to Mark (Gatiss) that I thought I knew what his last moment would be. And indeed his last line. But if it didn’t fit the scene I wouldn’t crowbar it in. I’ve had the vague storyline in place for a long while.
Q: What episodes or scenes do you think will define Matt’s time as the Doctor?
SM: I think ‘The Eleventh Hour’ was such an extraordinary debut. Everybody for a year of poor Matt Smith’s life had been saying, ‘total mistake. He’s far too young.’ Then he came in and he was brilliant. ‘Vincent and The Doctor’ was also such a lovely episode and I was thrilled Richard Curtis was able to write for the show. There’s the physical comedy that Matt has brought and of course fish fingers and custard. I think his relationship with his own TARDIS in’ The Doctor’s Wife’ was gorgeous.
Q: What do you think distinguishes Matt from the other Doctors?
SM: I think he does old Doctor better than anybody else. It’s not an accident. It’s something he very, very consciously thought about. Because he was the youngest Doctor Matt said, ‘he’s only got young skin. Nothing else is young.’ I think Matt makes you think very believably that he is this ancient being.
Q: The Christmas special will introduce the next Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi. What was it about Peter that you thought was right for the role?
SM: He’s one of the best actors in the country and is very beloved. I was at the BAFTAs shortly before we were contemplating Peter and heard the cheer he got from the audience. Nobody has a bad thing to say about him and that’s not a minor issue when it comes to casting a Doctor. They’ve got to be lovely. And he’s a huge fan of Doctor Who. So we asked and he was incredibly excited to come and audition. We didn’t tell him that he was the only person auditioning because that would be oddly pressuring.
Q: Did you deliberately aim to cast an older Doctor?
SM: It wasn’t the reason I cast Peter but I do think if we’d cast another Doctor as young as Matt - because Matt’s been so good at being The Young Doctor - I’m not sure what another one would have done. They’d have to have either been deliberately different or just repeat him.
AN INTERVIEW WITH MATT SMITH
Question: Can you first tell us a little bit about the Christmas special?
Matt Smith: The Christmas special for me is a bitter sweet episode because I’m leaving, but Steven has written a brilliant, adventurous, funny episode and I’m really thrilled with it. It feels wonderfully Christmassy.
Q: What did you want from your last episode?
MS: I think it’s good for the Doctor to go out with a bang, a crash and a wallop. I’m pleased it’s really funny and mad. When I got to the last 20 pages and it was quite a hard read for me, but I hope it’s going to be a belter. We’ve got a great director in Jamie Payne and some really lovely double hand stuff with me and Jenna. Steven’s managed to tie in plot points and narratives that have been threaded through over years and I think that’s ingenious.
Q: Emotionally, how did it feel to be doing your final performance?
MS: It felt very emotional to be doing my final episode. My mother is mortified, honestly she was at the front of campaign for me to stay and wasn’t happy when I said I was going to leave. But, when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. Of course, it’s very sad for me in many ways because everything is the last time. It’s the last read-through, the last time I put on the bow tie and the last scene in the TARDIS. But the show is about change and I had lunch with Peter Capaldi shortly after the announcement and I think he’s just going to be incredible. He has the most brilliant ideas. As a fan, I’m genuinely excited to see what he’s going to do because I think he’s going to do something extraordinary.
Q: So you’re still going to be a fan?
MS: Yeah, absolutely. I’ll be a fan. I’m very grateful to Steven Moffat and that whole team up in Wales for the past four years and you know I want the show to go from strength to strength, which it will.
It might take me a couple of weeks to get my head around it. I think it was the same for David and I think it was the same for Karen, when she watched Jenna come in. I don’t think it’s easy, but it’s not my show it’s the fans show, so I’ll be a fan and then it will be my show.
Q: Have you been given anything by the fans as a leaving present?
MS: I was doing a promo shoot for the 50th and these two girls came on set. They had made me this book which must have had 50 or 60 letters in, saying thank you for being Doctor Who for being part of it. Things like that are amazing. I’ve said it before, the fans of this show are really spectacular and they’ve made this an extraordinary journey for me and I’m very, very grateful. I don’t think there’s another set of fans like it.
Q: Can we expect some nods to past series with this Christmas special? Are we referencing old specials?
MS: With Doctor Who you’re always looking back and forward at the same time, because you tend to be jumping around. I don’t want to give too much away, but obviously when you look at my tenure over the last four years, there are stories and plot points and villains in there that are particular to my Doctor and I think he’s got to face all that.
AN INTERVIEW WITH JENNA COLEMAN
Question: How did you find the read-through? Was it emotional?
Jenna Coleman: It was a very emotional read-through. Just going through the process of saying goodbye was difficult. The script itself is very emotional, but also joyous. But saying those words and saying goodbye was never going to be easy.
Q: Is there a sense from the start of the episode that we’re moving towards a regeneration?
JC: It’s very much an adventure, but it goes off on a different track. People watching will know that it’s Matt’s last episode, but it doesn’t loom over from the start.
Q: We were introduced to Clara as the impossible girl last year. Are we going to find out more about her family background?
JC: Absolutely. I think there had to be a sense of mystery last year to make the plot work. What’s really interesting is that it does feel like we’re starting again and we get to see her home life as well as her life with the Doctor.
Q: From a few pictures that have been released there are some of you cooking Christmas dinner. Have you ever done that in real life?
JC: My mum does the Christmas cooking. It couldn’t be any other way.
Q: Are you looking forward to filming next year with Peter?
JC: It will be a different show next year. We have a bit of a gap before we start filming the new series, so I have time to get my head around it all. Me and Peter will get together before Christmas to start rehearsing and the scripts will start coming in. I think when I came in I think there was just a week off in production where Arthur and Karen left, so that would have been a strange shift. This episode is very much about Matt and the Eleventh Doctor and Clara and the Eleventh Doctor and their last adventure together. I have no idea where we’re going to next series!
Q: Where will you be watching the special this year? Will you be at home?
JC: Yeah I think so. Last year the whole family got a cottage together where mum still did the Christmas cooking. We’ll definitely all be together.
Q: What was your reaction when you heard the next Doctor was Peter Capaldi?
JC: It was kind of that moment ‘of course, makes sense’. It’s funny as I don’t think he was one of the names that was originally being speculated about and it wasn’t until the week before that his name came up. He’s going to be so different to Matt and take the show in an interesting direction.
Q: When were you told?
JC: Matt and I were told together during the Royal visit to Roath Lock studios. We could tell something was going on and we managed to pin the producers down and get it out of them!
Q: How hard was it to keep the secret?
JC: I think I’ve learnt my lesson in that the best thing to do is not to tell anybody and then you don’t have your own paranoia that you’ve let something out.
Q: What will you miss about working with Matt?
JC: Everything! When you’re reading a scene with him he can turn anything on its head. He’s so inventive, clever and very funny. There’s just so much that I’ll miss about him.
AN INTERVIEW WITH ORLA BRADY
Question: What drew you to the role of Tasha Lem?
Orla Brady: So you're sitting in your dressing room on an ordinary day (well ordinary for an actress) playing a normal person who makes breakfast and loses her purse sometimes. Then along comes a call to play a galactic nun and whizz around the universe with Matt Smith. Now what girl wouldn't be drawn to that?
Q: Can you tell us anything about how we first meet your character?
OB: The Doctor goes to see Tasha as they are old friends. He needs her help and knows he will find it with her as although she is fearsomely powerful she is loyal to her friend.
Q: What can you tell us about your costume and make-up? Did you work closely with the costume designer?
OB: The designer Howard Burden knows the Doctor Who world inside-out and had an image of Tasha that I loved from the start, so there was very little need for me to suggest anything. I just climbed into it really. Emma Cowen created a look that was a little spooky, referencing Blade Runner a little. We both wanted her to look as she is described in the writing, imposing, human, but with a touch of alien.
Q: In this special a whole host of the Doctor’s most famous enemies come together, including Cybermen, the Silence, Weeping Angels and Daleks - how did you find filming opposite these monsters? Have you had to do anything similar for previous roles?
OB: Most of my acting life I have played ordinary women so obviously monsters haven't factored much. However I did love getting to face off with one of this lot in ‘The Time of the Doctor’.
Q: How did you find working with departing Doctor, Matt Smith?
OB: Joyous. I had heard through friends that he was a nice guy (and he is) but what struck me most is how enthusiastic and engaged he was in his role, in every single scene we played. It so often happens that someone playing a character for years sits back a bit. He didn't. He was as full of energy and inventiveness as someone on their first day and it was truly good to be around.
Q: Did you meet the next Doctor, Peter Capaldi?
OB: Yes. Peter came to set for the first time and it was good to see him again as we had briefly played boyfriend and girlfriend years ago and he was hilarious. He has an air about him that man... can't wait to see what he will do with his Doctor.
Q: How was it filming in Cardiff?
OB: Would it be obvious to say rainy? It was a place I had never been to, I didn't know anyone and was staying in a hotel which can be a bit glum. However the thing I discovered about Cardiff is that it is the friendliest place I have ever been. Ever. The Capital of Friendly. I could live there now I think... but I would buy a new raincoat.
Q: And finally where will you be watching the Christmas special?
OB: My mum and brothers are insisting on watching it on Christmas day, but I find it excruciating to watch things I'm in with other people so I will go for a pint with a friend.

In 1767 John Spilsbury cut a wooden map of the world into irregular pieces and invited people to put the world back together again. It proved a popular distraction and many more followed… These early wooden puzzles were called ‘Dissected Maps’ and as their popularity grew they began to be made using jig saws and eventually, this tool - used for manufacture - gave its name to the puzzle itself: The jigsaw.
Today, centuries later we present three online Doctor Who jigsaws! We’re not asking you to put the world back together but can you reassemble these three images relating to The Time of the Doctor?
Once completed, each jigsaw will reveal the answer to the question asked at the start of the puzzle… Good luck with all three!
