10 Reasons Why We’re Super Excited about The Girl Who Died!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 10/16/2015 - 7:00am

The new episode is on BBC One on Saturday at 8.20pm and here are ten reasons why we can’t wait!

The Vikings are coming!

It’s the first time that Vikings have played such a central role in a Doctor Who adventure and although we’ll get the shouty, swordy, fighty Viking stuff, we’ll also see another side to them. And there’s one called Ashildr you should definitely keep your eyes on…

New monsters!

They’re huge, they’re scary and we’re guessing those guns don’t fire blanks. The Mire are the deadliest warrior race in the galaxy and they do not come in peace…

New Villain!

His name is Odin, he’s in charge of the murderous Mire and he shouts things like, ‘You fight or you die!’ Bring it on! Played by the brilliant David Schofield we reckon he’ll definitely be a baddie we’ll love to hate!

The Write Stuff

The ep is written by Jamie Mathieson and Steven Moffat who between them have a writing pedigree that takes in episodes such as Blink, The Day of the Doctor, Flatline and Mummy on the Orient Express. Oh, and a little show called Sherlock. So, fair to say expectations are high but hey, no pressure…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14470884047007","pid":"p0358yct","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p0358yct\/player"}}); }); Facing the facts…

Talking of Steven Moffat, Doctor Who’s lead writer recently revealed that in The Girl Who Died, the Doctor will finally remember where he’s seen his own face before… We want to know more! Is it a link to previous episode The Fires of Pompeii? An adventure we don’t know about?

We’ll have all the drama and scares that new enemies and a seemingly impossible situation for the Doctor deliver, but there are some laugh out loud moments in the episode that we’re looking forward to. For starters, in the preview clip below we’re loving the Doctor’s expression when he puts his foot down…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14470884047014","pid":"p03565k2","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p03565k2\/player"}}); }); Amazing Maisie

Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams guest stars in the episode and is brilliant as Ashildr, the young Viking whose quiet life is disrupted when her friends and family are attacked by killer space warriors. (Don’t you just hate it when that happens?) But she’s also back in the following week’s episode… How? Who knows! Maisie herself teased us by revealing, ‘I can’t say how, so you’ll have to watch until the end (of The Girl Who Died) where there’s a lovely little surprise…’

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14470884047018","pid":"p035cv4y","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p035cv4y\/player"}}); }); You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14470884047021","pid":"p0351cnh","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p0351cnh\/player"}}); }); Pressing problems…

Sometimes preview clips are funny or intriguing or thought-provoking. Other times they make you shout, ‘Noooooooooo! What happens next?’ The clip below tumbles into that category. How do Clara and Ashildr escape? We demand answers!

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14470884047025","pid":"p0358vjw","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p0358vjw\/player"}}); }); Dragon’s Den..?

Doctor Who is made in Wales so it feels appropriate that at last we have what looks like an enormous, awesome dragon in the show, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase, ‘You’re fired!’

How will they do it?

The Doctor and Clara have 12 hours to turn a bunch of farmers and blacksmiths into a fighting force that can defeat a frighteningly powerful alien army that has just been declared war on. To be honest, we think they’ll find a way… but we can’t wait to find out how!

Why Maisie Williams is Perfect for Doctor Who

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 10/13/2015 - 6:30am

The announcement that Maisie Williams would be guest starring in Doctor Who triggered street parties, one-off public holidays and the spontaneous combustion of at least 17 fans around the world. Okay. Not really. But almost. And it’s fair to say people were excited in a big way which is totally understandable as we were, too. So, ahead of her debut with the Doctor (Saturday, 8.20pm on BBC One since you ask) here are 8 reasons we reckon Maisie Williams is perfect for Doctor Who…

Chemistry with Capaldi

Maisie guest stars in the next two episodes so it’s no surprise she gets a lot of screen time with the Doctor. And it just works. ‘She’s a fantastical contrast to Peter (Capaldi)!’ Steven Moffat told us. ‘All of entertainment is bound by the two of them and they work beautifully together.’

Cheeky, Feisty and Fun!

Doctor Who has a long tradition of strong female characters who challenge the Doctor and it’s crystal clear that Maisie Williams can pull that off to perfection. Check out the moment at the end of the trailer below. Normally you’d need to operate on the Doctor’s vocal chords to render him speechless but Maisie’s character manages it with a simple reveal and a single line. See what we mean?

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14464827037627","pid":"p02wns22","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p02wns22\/player"}}); }); Charismaisie.

She’s charismatic without even trying. We’re calling that charismaisie.

Game On

We reached the fifth paragraph before mentioning Game of Thrones. Do we win a prize? As the never-say-die Arya Stark, Maisie has got plenty of experience when it comes to sword play, screen fights and all the other stuff she’s been doing in GoT since 2011. Perfect preparation for an episode about a Viking village having to defend itself against space warriors, we’d have thought.

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14464827037642","pid":"p034rs3s","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p034rs3s\/player"}}); }); Crossing fandoms

It’s fair to say that Doctor Who and Game of Thrones both have huge and fabulous fan bases right around the world. And crossing fan bases is like Ghostbusters crossing streams. It’s a little daunting but the results are spectacular. Or as Maisie put it, ‘When you cross over to a different geeky, fandom world, everyone was like: THIS IS INSANE! So, it was such a nice buzz!’

Maisie Keeping Mum

There’s been a TARDIS-full of speculation about the character Maisie will be playing and what her connection with the Time Lord might be. Luckily, after years of keeping secrets on Game of Thrones Maisie has let nothing slip meaning we’re all going to have to watch her eps to uncover the truth…

The Extraordinary Ms Williams

She may be best known for Game of Thrones but she also starred in The Secret of Crickley Hall (see the pic below!) and it was her performance in Cyberbully that caught the attention of Doctor Who’s executive producer, Brian Minchin. ‘She was captivating [in Cyberbully]!’ he explained. ‘If someone can take 80 minutes of screen time, tell a story like that and take you with them… That’s extraordinary!’

Loving it!

Maisie clearly loved appearing in Doctor Who and that sense of enjoyment virtually reaches out of the screen and ruffles your hair. ‘It’s been really exciting working on it [Doctor Who],’ she told us. ‘And I’m glad to be a part of it now!’

Maisie Williams is in The Girl Who Died which starts on BBC One on Saturday at 8.20pm.

Slipknot’s Corey Taylor Roars into Action in this Week’s Doctor Who!

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 10/08/2015 - 10:01am

Corey Taylor – best known as the lead singer in the US rock band Slipknot – lends his unique vocals to the Fisher King, a terrifying new foe in this week’s episode of Doctor Who.

Corey is a big Doctor Who fan and was delighted to help make the Fisher King extra scary by recording roars and screams that can be heard in Before the Flood which starts on Saturday at 8.25pm on BBC One. He described the experience as ‘awesome’ and took time out to visit the TARDIS (above) during his time at the BBC’s Roath Lock Studios.

‘We needed an awesome roar for the Fisher King,’ producer Derek Ritchie explained. ‘We asked Corey if he might like to do the honours… He was completely up for it!’

‘He has one of the most well-known screams in the history of music,’ Derek added. ‘We now have the most incredible roar for our incredible monster! He now sounds as terrifying as he looks!’

Why are we gushing about Before the Flood?

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 10/06/2015 - 6:00am

We loved Under the Lake and if you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favour and BBC iPlayer it! Next up is the spectacular Before the Flood which begins on BBC One at 8.25pm on Saturday. Are we excited? You betcha. And here are ten reasons why…

The Ghost Doctor – What? What! What?!

The moment we saw the ghost Doctor we were desperate to know what happens next… Have we glimpsed the Doctor’s ultimate fate? And does this make Toby Whithouse a ghost writer? (Badda boom!)

The Fisher King

The blurb for this ep tells us ‘a fearsome alien warlord - the Fisher King - sets in motion a twisted plan to ensure his own survival…’ Fearsome alien warlord? Why, just for once, couldn’t it have been a disarmingly genial alien warlord? Anyway... We think the Fisher King is the monstrous-looking dude in the trailer below and although we’ll be watching from behind the sofa, we can’t wait to meet him. What’s his plan? And is the Doctor really powerless to prevent it?

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14458779040880","pid":"p0345n54","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p0345n54\/player"}}); }); Corey gets Roary

Slipknot meets Doctor Who? We’re in! Producer Derek Ritchie explained, ‘We needed an awesome roar for the Fisher King. We asked Corey if he might like to do the honours. He was completely up for it!’ Sounds good to us! No, literally – it sounds good to us…

Far from hum Drum

The Doctor is in dead trouble (we’re hilarious) but Clara and co haven’t exactly checked into a 5 star hotel. They’re trapped in an underwater base that’s got homicidal ghosts on the loose and their biggest hope of rescue has just turned up which would be fab, except it looks like he’s carked it…

So, who’s next?

In the trailer below, Bennett demands to know, ‘So, who’s next?’ With the Doctor and two crew members already turned into ghosts, who’s next in the line? Lunn? Cass? Surely not… Clara?

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14458779040901","pid":"p0344k08","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p0344k08\/player"}}); }); Roll Over, Beethoven

Teasing this episode, Steven Moffat threw in the question, ‘Who composed Beethoven’s Fifth?’ So, our question is, what has the crazy-haired German composer got to do with the crazy-eyed ghosts in the 22nd century? We demand to know the score!

Wholly Moley!

It looks like we’ll meet Prentis before he died, which should prove something of a treat. He’s played by the brilliant Paul Kaye (Thoros in Game of Thrones) and is the same species as Gibbis, the Tivolian from The God Complex. He may not have been everyone’s choice as a roomie but he was a fascinating character so we’re looking forward to find out what the deal with Prentis will be.

Amour the Flood

Call us old romantics, but we reckon Bennett lurves O’Donnell and that Cass and Lunn should be an item. Now, in Doctor Who that could spell happily ever after in a cottage in the country or it could mean the kind of plot-line that tugs at your heart and forces you to pretend you’ve got grit in your eye…

Barney with Bennett?

Bennett was one of the Drum’s more timid crew members but he seems to be having a bit of a heated exchange with the Doctor here… What gives? What’s happened between the two of them? We can probably file this under, ‘What on earth has the Doctor done this time?’ and we’re looking forward to finding out!

For Pete’s Sake!

The guy that provided the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace! The actor that played Pete in Shaun of the Dead! And the one who played Denarian Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy! They all provide the voice of the Fisher King in Before the Flood and they’re all the award-winning Peter Serafinowicz! Bring it ownnnn!!!

And finally, here’s Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat introducing the episode… BBC One. 8.25pm on Saturday… We’re there!

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14458779040943","pid":"p034hrxf","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p034hrxf\/player"}}); });

Dive, dive, dive! Eight Reasons Why We Can’t Wait to Go Under the Lake!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 10/02/2015 - 4:45am

Episode 3 of the new series is called Under the Lake and premieres on BBC One this Saturday at 8.25pm. Here are 8 reasons why we can’t wait…

It’s the Clara and the Doctor versus ghosts!

Doctor Who has flirted with ghosts in the past. Think Hide, from series 7, for example. But in Under the Lake, it’s full on undead action with phantoms at large on an underwater base making for a very spirited adventure…

We want to know what happened 7 or 8 hours earlier… You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14452668038482","pid":"p033yqp5","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p033yqp5\/player"}}); }); Paul Kaye!

We’re Game of Thrones fans and so having Paul Kaye on board for the ep is another reason for us to get excited. In Thrones he played Thoros and although we’re not sure about his role in Doctor Who, he seems to be playing a dead guy in a top hat. Oh-Kaye…

Toby Whithouse

It’s by the same writer that gave us School Reunion, The Vampires of Venice, The God Complex and A Town Called Mercy. We couldn’t be happier, unless this one was called The Vampire School Mercy Complex. Maybe next time.

New, New, New!

We love Missy, the Daleks, Davros and Skaro. In fact love is too small a word for it. But Doctor Who always mixes it up well and after a cracking adventure with some familiar foes it’s great to be plunged into a new adventure with new threats and new friends. Which one of these guys do you think will be your fave?

That line!

One of our favourite things about the trailer below was the Doctor’s line: ‘Every time I think it couldn’t get any more extraordinary it surprises me. It’s impossible, I hate it, it’s evil, it’s astonishing… I want to kiss it to death!’ Well, it’s from this episode so at last we’ll get to learn who or what he was on about…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14452668038511","pid":"p02wns22","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p02wns22\/player"}}); }); A cool, underwater base…

There’s something claustrophobic and inherently dangerous about a sub-aquatic complex. Yep, setting the action in an underwater base immediately makes this an intriguing story and not just because it gives us an opportunity to make puns about the Doctor being out of his depth…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14452668038518","pid":"p033w1n2","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p033w1n2\/player"}}); }); When Ghosts Attack!

We know we’ve already had a little squee about it being a ghost story, but look! These particular ghosts are tooled up and comin’ at ya… Who you gonna call? THE DOCTOR!!!

Doctor Who Spin Off: Class

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 10/01/2015 - 5:00pm

BBC Three announces Doctor Who Spin Off

BBC Three today announces Class - a new 8 x 45 minute Doctor Who spin off from the acclaimed YA author, Patrick Ness. Class is a YA series set in contemporary London. Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. With all the action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA fiction (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you’ve never seen them before.

Steven Moffat says, “No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we're bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain - but with monsters!”

On his first television series, writer Patrick Ness says, "I'm astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There's so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can't wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels."

Damian Kavanagh, Controller BBC Three adds, “We’re excited to give Patrick Ness this opportunity to work with us at BBC Three and the Doctor Who family. Patrick understands young audiences and I’m delighted he will use his incredible skills as a storyteller to delight audiences on BBC Three. BBC Three will always innovate and offer opportunities for brilliant new talent."

Polly Hill, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning, adds, “I am thrilled that Patrick Ness is writing his first drama series for BBC Three. The combination of Patrick and Steven Moffat, is an exciting partnership that has created a brilliant Doctor Who spin off for our BBC Three audience.”

Class is executive produced by Steven Moffatt, Patrick Ness and Brian Minchin. It was commissioned by Damian Kavanagh, Controller BBC Three and Polly Hill, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning.

An 8 x 45 minute series produced by BBC Cymru Wales in association with BBC Worldwide for BBC Three.

The series will film in and around Wales from Spring, 2016 and be on air next year.

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 09/29/2015 - 8:55am

The ARCADE is now live in the Doctor Who Game Maker so you can share your amazing games with the rest of the world! And as everyone loves a mission, each week we are going to set a Game Maker Weekly Challenge where we will be looking for games created with a specific theme… This week’s challenge is to create a game featuring Colony Sarff!

At the end of each challenge we will showcase our favourite games on the Doctor Who website and feature them in the Game Maker arcade. To take part in the Weekly Challenge, use the Game Maker to create a game featuring Colony Sarff and when you have finished your game, publish it to the arcade… It’s that simple! If you want to show off your published game to friends and family, you can get a direct link to your creation in the MAKE GAMES section of the Game Maker.

Colony Sarff is classed as an ENEMY in the Game Maker, but you can actually make a game where you control Colony Sarff as a PLAYER… And you can even set him to fire snakes! To set Colony Sarff as a PLAYER go to the player selection screen and click SHOW ALL. You will then be able to select and control Colony Sarff. To make him shoot snakes you just need to add a BLAST component!

Peter Capaldi Meets the Mission DALEK Winners!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 09/25/2015 - 4:50am

The winners of our recent Mission DALEK competition visited the TARDIS yesterday (Thursday, 24 September) where they met the Doctor himself – Peter Capaldi!

Peter chatted, signed autographs, had photos taken with the successful entrants and expressed his delight at the standard of all the videos, remarking on what an inventive, creative bunch Doctor Who fans are!

As well as talking with Peter, the visitors met the man who designed the current TARDIS set, Michael Pickwoad, and were shown around the studios by Doctor Who producer, Derek Ritchie. The day ended with a trip to the Doctor Who Experience, hopefully rounding off what had been a great Doctor Who experience for everyone!

Mission DALEK was part of the BBC's Make It Digital season which is all about inspiring you to get creative with digital technology. Check out their site for great advice, inspiration and tips on how to get involved… and get digital!

Finally, massive thanks again to everyone who got involved with Mission DALEK and you can enjoy the winning entries online, now!
