Arise, Sir Doctor...

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 12/31/2015 - 8:22am

John Hurt, who so memorably played the War Doctor in 2013, has received a knighthood in the New Year Honours.

John Hurt first appeared in Doctor Who during the final, electrifying moments of The Name of the Doctor before making a cameo appearance in The Night of the Doctor. He later starred alongside Matt Smith and David Tennant in the show’s 50th anniversary special, the feature-length adventure, The Day of the Doctor. The veteran actor received his knighthood for services to drama after a career lasting more than five decades.

James Corden, who played Craig in The Lodger and Closing Time, is awarded an OBE for services to drama and said he was ‘thrilled, overwhelmed and honoured to be recognised in such a way’, adding ‘My mum is already fretting about what to wear!’

Meera Syal has also been recognised in the New Year Honours and becomes a CBE. Well-known to Doctor Who fans for playing Dr Nasreen Chaudhry in The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood, she’s recognised for services to drama and literature.

Congratulations to John Hurt, James Corden and Meera Syal!

The 2015 Doctor Who Christmas Special

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 11/24/2015 - 10:36am

We’re delighted to confirm that Greg Davies and Matt Lucas will be joining Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special!

Greg Davies is the writer and star of Man Down and his appearance in BBC Three’s Cuckoo earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme. He played ‘Mr Gilbert’ in The Inbetweeners and is also a critically acclaimed stand-up comedian.

Matt Lucas is a BAFTA TV Award winner who shot to prominence as George Dawes in the anarchic game show, Shooting Stars. He went onto achieve huge success alongside David Walliams in shows including Little Britain and Come Fly With Me. He’s also featured in hit movies like Shaun of the Dead and Bridesmaids.

So, that’s the cast… But what the Doctor will be up to this festive season? Well…

It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from carols and comedy antlers. But when the Time Lord’s help is requested he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy! King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious and his giant robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River work out who the Doctor is?

All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and at a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time…

Long Distance Clara…

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 11/21/2015 - 4:02pm

It’s not often the Doctor has to thank Missy for anything, but it was his old frenemy who originally put Clara in touch with the Doctor in The Bells of Saint John. Of course, by that stage he’d already met three ‘versions’ of her …

He encountered the ‘Oswin Oswald’ version in Asylum of the Daleks – the brave, cheeky but ultimately doomed ‘soufflé girl’ who helped the Doctor escape his oldest enemies.

And in Victorian London he was helped by Clara Oswin Oswald - a young barmaid and governess born in November, 1866. Although she was killed by the evil ‘Ice Governess’ she now had the Doctor’s attention and he resolved to solve the mystery of the girl twice dead… He came close to a clue when he met Clara as a child, but failing to recognise her, he allowed her to simply walk away…

Although Clara became the Doctor’s companion in The Bells of Saint John she remained the ‘Impossible Girl’. A conundrum to be solved. Or as the Doctor put it, ‘…a mystery wrapped in an enigma…’

The Doctor even visited Caliburn House to seek the opinion of empath Emma Grayling who simply told him, ‘She’s a perfectly ordinary girl. Very pretty, very clever, more scared than she lets on…’

In The Name of the Doctor the mystery was solved when Clara followed the Great Intelligence into the Doctor’s timeline. She was splintered into many different versions of herself, each intent on rescuing the Doctor… He was able to extract her and return her to our normal plain where she became a school teacher at Coal Hill!

She helped the Doctors make the right choice in The Day of the Doctor and persuaded the Time Lords to grant him a new regeneration cycle in The Time of the Doctor. But the new, spikier Doctor shocked her… He asked if he was a good man and Clara had to admit she no longer knew…

During the early days of this new Doctor she met and fell in love with Danny Pink. Juggling life with Danny and the Doctor was tricky, not helped by Time Lord’s aversion to the man he called PE!

Over time she grew attached to the ‘new’ Doctor, warming to his understated kindness and the way that his old heroism and bravery were still guiding this timeless hero. After Danny died defending Earth she threw herself more rigorously into her adventures with the Doctor, relishing the excitement and helter-skelter action that travels in the TARDIS inevitably delivered…

That reckless streak concerned the Doctor and he attempted to curb her enthusiasm… But when Clara saw an opportunity to help Rigsy, even though it meant putting her life in danger, she seized the opportunity. This time there would be no escape and she was forced to face the raven. She asked the Doctor to be proud of here and then, unflinching and brave, she walked across ancient cobbles and…

Clara will be missed by the Doctor, by Rigsy, maybe even by Ashildr and certainly by the many whose lives she touched. But Clara Oswald, the funny, feisty, heroic and human Impossible Girl, will be missed most keenly by us.

Clara’s 10 Most Heroic Moments

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 11/21/2015 - 4:01pm

In the end, Clara’s compassion and bravery led to her death on the strange, alien street in the heart of London. Her decision to help Rigsy was typical of Clara Oswald and to celebrate one of the Doctor’s greatest companions we look back on ten moments of bravery when the Impossible Girl did all she possibly could…

Not technically Clara, but a version of her saved the Doctor in Asylum of the Daleks. She managed to overcome her Dalek conversion and gave him a way out to freedom, advising him to run… and remember!

In The Rings of Akhaten the Doctor faced an entity so powerful that even he was unable to defeat it, but undaunted, Clara faced the adversary armed only with her wits, determination… and a leaf! She took it down, running rings (of Akhaten) around it!

In The Name of the Doctor Clara risked everything to help the Time Lord… We discovered that she was splintered across time and space, rescuing her friend from countless perils and even persuading him to take the TARDIS he ended up stealing when he left Gallifrey!

Heroism of a different kind from Clara in the 50th anniversary special, persuading him to reconsider his actions as he seemed set on the destruction of his home planet… It may have been The Day of the Doctor, but in a way, it was really Clara who saved the day.

Whilst in the town of Christmas, when the aged Eleventh Doctor was on the point of death – out of hope and out of regenerations – it was Clara who furiously and lovingly convinced them to grant him a new regeneration cycle. Best Christmas Present ever?

In Deep Breath her best friend in the world had a new face and a strikingly different personality, but she chose to trust him and embrace him, because that’s what friendship – and courage - is all about.

In Death in Heaven Clara helped Danny and the Doctor defeat the Cybermen, even though she knew it meant losing the man she loved. And to top it all she then deceived the Doctor into thinking she and Danny were doing fine, just because she wanted the Doctor to be okay.

In The Magician’s Apprentice / The Witch’s Familiar Clara made it clear she’d do anything to protect the Doctor, facing Missy on her own and even entering the terrifying city of the Daleks, all to help her best friend!

When the TARDIS took the Doctor and Clara to Viking times we saw her taking on Odin single-handed and shortly after she convinced the Doctor to help and ultimately save the villagers. The episode was called The Girl Who Died but we loved the woman who was there for the Doctor.

In Face the Raven she faced her own fears, accepting her death in a typically heroic fashion. And so for helping Rigsy, her final orders to the Doctor and such bravery as she walked to her death, we put this episode number one in our countdown of Clara’s most heroic moments!

Clara and the Doctors

BBC - Doctor Who - Sat, 11/21/2015 - 4:00pm

Clara Oswald was a total one-off in many ways. Obvs. But one of the coolest unique things about her was that she featured with each of the first thirteen Doctors! That’s got to be worth a closer look, right?

He’s the One!

Clara not only met the first Doctor, she persuaded him to take the TARDIS that became ‘his’ time machine. Good call, Miss Oswald!

Two’s Company!

She encountered the Second Doctor very briefly in The Name of his Doctor. He was zipping along at full pelt… Possibly fleeing the Terrible Zodin..?

The Power of Three

It’s the Third Doctor in ‘good old’ Bessie, driving his quirky yellow roadster through the wilds of Gallifrey, as seen in The Five Doctors.

Four to Doomsday?

Clara glimpsed the Time Lord during the mid-point of his Fourth incarnation… The moment below occurred for him during the Sontarans’ attempt to conquer his home planet in The Invasion of Time.

V for Victory!

The Fifth Doctor is in a pickle but anyone who’s watched Arc of Infinity knows he won out in the end…

Six of One…

The Sixth Doctor strides quickly through a corridor behind Clara and she spins around, somehow aware of his presence. Possibly she heard that very loud coat he’s rocking…

The Magnificent Seven

Clara glimpsed him before anyone said ‘don’t leave me hanging’ or the Seventh Doctor might have been yelling those words in this moment taken from Dragonfire, the adventure where he first met Ace.

The Never Hateful Eight

In this blink and you’ll miss it moment, the Eighth Doctor rushes past Clara. He appears to be wearing the garb he grabbed in his debut adventure as opposed to the more world-worn clobber he worked in The Night of the Doctor.

War Path

Although she’d already glimpsed the War Doctor, she got to know this incarnation of the Time Lord during The Day of the Doctor and it was clear he had a very big soft spot for his future companion. ‘If I grow to be half the man that you are, Clara Oswald,’ he once told her, ‘I shall be happy indeed!’

Lots of planets have a Nine

All the shots above (aside from the pic at the top and the one of the War Doctor) are from The Name of the Doctor, taken from the episode’s pre-title sequence. But various versions of the Doctor dashed past Clara towards the close of the adventure, just before the Eleventh Doctor met the War Doctor. This pic is taken from that sequence as we’re briefly reunited with the fantastic Ninth Doctor…

X the Unknown

She may not have known in him in the pic immediately below (again from The Name of the Doctor) but Clara got to know the Tenth Doctor better during the epic, The Day of the Doctor.

Starting Eleven

Of course, when we first encountered a ‘version’ of Clara she was the ‘soufflé girl’ although heart-breakingly, the Eleventh Doctor ultimately discovered she’d already been converted into a Dalek… The Doctor then encountered Clara in Victorian London during The Snowmen and finally, in The Bells of Saint John, ‘our’ Clara agreed to join him in his adventures throughout time and space…

Twelve: Angry Man

Her relationship with the Twelfth Doctor was initially fraught but over time their friendship became stronger than ever. Now he’s lost her we can only guess how angry, vengeful and spectacular his next move will be…

Why we can’t wait to Face the Raven!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 11/20/2015 - 4:00am

As we hurtle towards the series finale it feels to us like things are becoming ominous and even more exciting… Judging from the trailers (see below) there’s a lot to look forward to in the new adventure and here are some of the things we can’t wait to enjoy…

Ashildr is back!

Maisie Williams returns as Me, but can we trust her? Last time the Doctor saw her she was an eerie presence in the background of a photo, simply watching… Will she become the Doctor’s ally… or his adversary?

Rigsy returns!

We’re big fans of both Rigsy and Joivan Wade, the actor who plays him. He first appeared in Flatline and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s happened in his life after he helped defeat the Boneless. And what new crisis brings him back into the world of Clara and the Doctor?

Goodbye, Doctor…

We know Jenna Coleman is leaving soon, but could episode 10 be connected with Clara’s departure? Is she saying goodbye to the Doctor forever in this trailer? We hope not!

In the introduction below, Peter Capaldi talks about hidden streets in London… But what is keeping them hidden? How? And perhaps most intriguingly – why?

We’ve glimpsed a Cyberman in the trailer and know the Judoon feature in the episode… Will there be more old enemies lurking in the shadows, and if so, what’s their plan?

Write this way…

It’s always great to watch episodes by new writers and see the ideas and fresh adventures they bring to the world of Doctor Who. Face the Raven is written by Who newbie Sarah Dollard and we love this interview she gave about working on the show…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924055784","pid":"p02tcf16","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p02tcf16\/player"}}); }); The world of Face the Raven

Sometimes the look of an episode draws you into it… The exotic alien locale of The Rings of Akhaten or the leafy London of In the Forest of the Night are obvious examples and we’re loving the visuals of this episode, from the narrow confines of the street to the breath-taking shots of the TARDIS flying over London with Clara hanging out the door… Hang on! Does it look to you as if she’s about to fall?

‘It’s a number and it’s counting down to zero…’

But what happens when it reaches zero?

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924055802","pid":"p038hlq7","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p038hlq7\/player"}}); }); Time flies…

Steven Moffat has revealed that someone must face the raven, but who will it be and what does it actually mean? Find out on Saturday, 8.10pm on BBC One!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 11/13/2015 - 8:23am

Our colleagues in the Black Archive have recently examined content which they believe to have originated from the 38th century and we need your help… Can you throw light on the latest artefacts acquired by UNIT from our ‘contact’ in Utah?

We’re particularly keen to learn more about these two snippets of video footage which Malcolm claims have somehow been broadcast from the future… (Yes, we know it’s a crazy theory. He’s over tired. Maybe he just needs a bit more sleep?)

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056002","pid":"p037nmj4","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p037nmj4\/player"}}); }); You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056009","pid":"p037nq7v","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p037nq7v\/player"}}); });

Although if asked we will deny requesting outside help, we have already questioned a number of experts about the meaning of the footage… Our interviews with them lead us to designate this whole episode, SLEEP NO MORE…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056017","pid":"p037l8gr","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p037l8gr\/player"}}); });

In addition to the experts already consulted, UNIT is keen to talk to the individual on the left of this shot…

Aside from bearing a striking resemblance to a young Professor Richard Lazarus, we believe he is connected with Sleep No More and indeed many ‘episodes’ that have previously come to the attention of both Torchwood and this organisation…

Finally, our contact in Utah supplied us with this footage that offers intriguing evidence of who might be in league with the individual above... Have you seen this man?

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056046","pid":"p02yvk3k","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p02yvk3k\/player"}}); });

A full, transmission of SLEEP NO MORE has been scheduled to broadcast on Saturday, 14 November at 20:15 on the BBC One frequency. ALERT! We understand there may be great danger in the footage and are therefore urging potential viewers:

Tips for living in a Zygon State

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 11/05/2015 - 12:22pm

The threat of a Zygon State is now terrifyingly real. So… if the Doctor can’t save the peace on Saturday and the rebel shape shifters succeed, here are some tips on how to get by in a Britain ruled by blobs...

Seeing Double

You’d better learn how to distinguish Zygon from human. Take a look at these pics of Clara… Can you tell good Clara from evil Clara? Answers during Saturday’s episode…

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14484924056163'), url : '' }); }); Just good fronds…

Careful where you tread! If someone brings you to a cave that’s glowing orange and full of fronds, DO NOT believe them when they try to pass it off as a Santa’s grotto that went a bit wrong. Study this video well. It shows you what a Zygon cave looks like…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056176","pid":"p03742rt","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p03742rt\/player"}}); }); Not feeling yourself today?

In a Zygon State, there could be a Zygon duplicate of you wandering about and being rude to teachers and your friends. The educational video below illustrates what it might feel like to talk to your own double…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056185","pid":"p03741cf","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p03741cf\/player"}}); }); Resistance is Useful!

If we do find ourselves in a Zygon State, we need to fight back and recapture our nation! Be on the lookout for UNIT personnel – they deal with the odd, the unexplained, anything on Earth... or
Beyond, so fighting back against alien overlords will be right up their street. Look out Kate Stewart, Osgood and of course, the Doctor!

Trust No-one!

Not even twins who look perfectly innocent…

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14484924056208'), url : '' }); }); A little less conversation…

Don’t try to engage your new overlords in anything approaching polite chit chat. Before you know it, they’ll be responding to the most innocuous comment with threats like, ‘All resistance will be crushed!’ as this footage, recently retrieved from the Black Archive, illustrates…

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056212","pid":"p01crr35","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p01crr35\/player"}}); }); If you can’t beat ’em...

Join them! Enjoy all the perks of being a Zygon overlord - except the morphing bit, obviously - by studying this video and then pretending to be a Zygon!

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14484924056220","pid":"p01m3gk3","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p01m3gk3\/player"}}); });

Right now the future hangs in the balance... Will we soon be living in a Zygon State? BBC One will be bringing you updates in a special news broadcast called The Zygon Inversion which will be transmitted on Saturday at 8pm… DO NOT MISS IT!

TARDIS: The stuff you might have missed…

BBC - Doctor Who - Tue, 11/03/2015 - 5:30am

What with Zygon invasions, the end of the world and everything (don’t worry – we’re just talking about the latest ep) it’s been quite a week in Who-land. So, in case you missed anything that materialised in the past 7 days or so, here’s our pick of the top 5 things you really need to be across!

On the trail of the trailer

Lots of you shook angry fists into the air because there was no ‘Next Time’ trailer at the end of The Zygon Invasion. Sorry! But at least we’ve got our hands/Zygon mits on this new trailer for episode 8. Enjoy!

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14483799107123","pid":"p036nt44","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p036nt44\/player"}}); }); We’ve released Osgood!

This week we saw Osgood captured by Zygons, but we’ve released her! To clarify – yes, the Doctor rescued her, but we’ve released her as a new character you can now build into your Doctor Who games! So if you’re an Osgood fan, pop along to the Game Maker and start making and sharing games featuring UNIT’s finest cosplayer!

Talking of which…

Since meeting Osgood in The Day of the Doctor she’s become a firm fave, so we decided that one video on her just wasn’t enough… Therefore, in the Zygon tradition of two of everything we’ve a brace of vids, featuring Ingrid Oliver, Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi, all sharing secrets about the character and her dramatic return!

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14483799107130","pid":"p036mzyd","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p036mzyd\/player"}}); }); You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14483799107133","pid":"p036mtq1","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p036mtq1\/player"}}); }); The Producers

We recently asked for questions to put to Doctor Who producers Nikki Wilson and Derek Ritchie and you responded in force! We’ll be bringing you some of their answers this week, but we start with a video covering one of the most popular questions – what were their fave episodes to produce?

You must enable javascript to play content require(['smp'], function(SMP) { new SMP({"container":"#smp-14483799107137","pid":"p036y3b6","playerSettings":{"delayEmbed":true,"externalEmbedUrl":"http:\/\/\/programmes\/p036y3b6\/player"}}); }); What to do in the event of a Zygon invasion…

After The Zygon Invasion this is now a very real concern for humankind, so we issued this easy-to-follow, 10-point guide

Other stuff… We released some great new galleries showcasing production artwork and behind the scenes images plus a quiz for The Zygon Invasion and a whole bunch of character profiles for the Doctor’s friends!
