Why Sixteen Years Ago, It Was Sixteen Years Ago (In A Galaxy Far, Far Away...)

Art Trap Productions - Mon, 05/25/2015 - 10:21pm

As I write this, it is May 25th, the real Star Wars Day. Long before any celebration took place on an arbitrary date that simply sounds like the word “Force”, fans of Star Wars celebrated the movies on the 25th of May as it is the anniversary of the release of the first movie in 1977 now titled, Episode IV: A New Hope. May 25th is also the anniversary of the release of the third movie, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi which had been released 32 years ago in 1983. What does this all mean and what is this all “16 years" all about? Well, 16 years is the amount of time we Star Wars fans had to wait and endure after the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983 for the next big screen adventure. It seemed like a lifetime back then. George Lucas had concluded the story with Return of the Jedi, putting to rest any notion of any following films after Return of Jedi, but there would always be the first three prequels, Episodes I-III which may be made at some undetermined date in the future. Lucas wanted to go off and explore other projects outside of the Star Wars universe after Jedi which was understandable for him. Though eventually he would return to a galaxy far, far away…

10 Things We Love About Captain Jack!

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 05/21/2015 - 5:39am

It’s ten years since he first appeared, so what better time to select ten things we loved about Captain Jack Harkness?

1. Bottoms Up!

His fab first scene where we saw him admiring not one but two derrieres… Rose and Algy both got the ‘excellent bottom’ accolade!

https://vine.co/v/eAL5h3WqQbD

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14355828098938'), url : 'https://vine.co/v/eAL5h3WqQbD' }); }); 2. Captain Cheeky

When it came to risqué one-liners Jack Harkness made Keith Lemon look like an amateur. Carry On, Captain!

https://vine.co/v/eAL5DnYv0dj

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14355828098941'), url : 'https://vine.co/v/eAL5DnYv0dj' }); }); 3. Loved the Doctor!

We could really identify with Jack because he bloody loved the Doctor and yep, we do, too.

https://vine.co/v/eALJBZWOWHT

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14355828098944'), url : 'https://vine.co/v/eALJBZWOWHT' }); }); 4. He was fun!

Jack couldn’t have been any more puppyish if he’d grown a tail and started wearing a lead (which frankly, we wouldn’t put past him) and that sense of enthusiasm was majorly fun and infectious.

5. Looking good!

The Doctor once commented that external appearances weren’t important… but it’s nice to get them right! And Jack, it must be said, was a master of getting them absolutely right!

https://vine.co/v/eALvtlpjpb3

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14355828098953'), url : 'https://vine.co/v/eALvtlpjpb3' }); }); 6. Nought to Flirty in 2 Seconds Flat…

We love the way Jack would try it on with anyone, regardless of gender or species type. He could make a simple ‘hello’ sound like it should have gone out post-watershed.

7. He was a man of mystery…

We’ve all lost a couple of hours thanks to tequila but only Jack has lost a couple of years due to the Time Agency… Intriguing!

https://vine.co/v/eALrzlTtbiF

require(['jquery-1.9', 'third-party'], function($, ThirdParty) { var embed = new ThirdParty({ container : $('#third-party-14355828098962'), url : 'https://vine.co/v/eALrzlTtbiF' }); }); 8. Elementary, my dear Holmes…

Jack was wearing a cool, long coat before other heroes nicked the idea (cough *Sherlock* cough), and was the only man who could wear a Bluetooth earpiece without looking like he worked on the desk next to Neville in The Call Centre.

9. Face of… Whoa!

We can’t say for certain but in one ep, didn’t Jack let on that he would become the Face of Boe?

10. He was fearless!

He’d cling onto the TARDIS as it zipped through the time/space vortex, take on Daleks single-handedly and once wore a waistcoat/white t-shirt combo. That’s what we call brave!

That’s our top ten things about Captain Jack. What do you think? Did we get it right? Miss anything off? Let us know by tweeting us at @bbcdoctorwho.

BAFTA Celebrates 10 years of Doctor Who with New York Event

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 05/13/2015 - 9:39am

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Wales, BAFTA Cymru, has today announced a special Doctor Who screening event in New York, USA, on Thursday 14 May to celebrate 10 years since Doctor Who was revived and went into production at BBC Wales.

The event, hosted in partnership with BAFTA New York, Cardiff Business Council and BBC America, will offer 220 industry guests a big-screen showing of recent episode Listen, starring Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with showrunner and writer Steven Moffat.
Hannah Raybould, Director of BAFTA Cymru, said: “We are very excited to be co-hosting this celebratory event in New York, which will be an opportunity to showcase the talent, skills, locations and innovation of the Welsh creative industries talent working on the Doctor Who series in Wales.

“With millions of fans around the world, and significant viewing figures in the US on BBC America, we felt the 10 year anniversary was a great occasion to toast the team behind the franchise, and offer US industry practitioners an insight into the way the series has developed, as well as an overview of the creative industries sector in Wales.”

Charles Tremayne, Chairman BAFTA New York, said: "Doctor Who is such an iconic part of British television culture that it’s always a privilege to celebrate its enduring success here in New York. The last 10 years since the re-launch in Cardiff have been among the most memorable of its many years on air. Apart from some great backstage stories, it will be great to hear from Steven how they keep Doctor Who so fresh and part of the zeitgeist around the world."

Steven Moffat said: “I loved Doctor Who on screen, long before I ever worked on it, just as I loved New York in the movies long before I ever got to go there. It will be a pleasure to combine both fantasies.”

Doctor Who is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has become a cult television favourite. The show has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was re-launched by BBC Wales in 2005 with Russell T Davies as showrunner and head writer for the first five years of its revival, alongside Julie Gardner as BBC Wales Head of Drama at that time. The first series of the 21st century, featuring Christopher Eccleston in the lead role, was filmed in and around Cardiff, with the South Wales area doubling for a number of other locations including London.

Doctor Who also spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including Torchwood (2006–11) and The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007–11), both created by Russell T Davies; K-9 (2009–10); and a single pilot episode of K-9 and Company (1981). The series is widely recognised as a key catalyst for the boom in drama made in Wales.

The event, which will take place in New York, USA, on 14 May, will be one of 60 events BAFTA Cymru will be hosting in 2015 as part of its year-round programme of screenings and learning events.

Double Trouble As Osgood Takes On The Terrifying Zygons

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 05/08/2015 - 6:54am

Cruel, heartless and shocking? Having being killed by Missy (Michelle Gomez) in the show’s series eight finale ‘Death in Heaven’, the Doctor’s biggest fan and UNIT scientist Osgood, played by Ingrid Oliver, has been brought back by Steven Moffat for Doctor Who series nine.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, said, “Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning - but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?”

The last time we saw Osgood as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart’s assistant was with the Twelfth Doctor during an invasion of Earth by an army of Cybermen led by a new, female incarnation of the Master. This time she’s back in action and comes face-to-face with the shape-shifting extra-terrestrial Zygons, as they also return for the new series. They last appeared in ‘The Day of the Doctor’ for the show’s 50th anniversary episode.

Speaking on set, Ingrid Oliver commented on her reappearance, “As every actor who’s worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there’s always the secret hope you'll get the call asking you to come back. To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant. The word ‘honour’ gets banded about a lot, but it really is, it’s an honour. Especially because I was so sure Osgood was a gonner after the last series!”

The two-part episode is currently being filmed in Cardiff and is written by Peter Harness (Doctor Who - Kill the Moon, Wallander, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell), produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Daniel Nettheim (Line of Duty, Glue).

Also joining Peter Capaldi (the Doctor) and Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) and confirmed for guest roles in the double episode is Jemma Redgrave, Jaye Griffiths, Cleopatra Dickens, Sasha Dickens, Abhishek Singh, Todd Kramer, Jill Winternitz, Nicholas Asbury, Jack Parker and Aidan Cook.

Doctor Who series nine will be back on BBC One in Autumn 2015 and further guest cast will be released over the coming months. Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

Ten Years Ago Today David Tennant was announced as the New Doctor…

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 04/15/2015 - 10:11am

Exactly a decade ago today, the BBC announced that a Scottish actor called David Tennant would be playing the Tenth Doctor! It was quickly established that he was a huge fan of the show and had even narrated BBC One’s ‘Doctor Who: A New Dimension’ which aired immediately before the programme returned in March, 2005.

Viewers had to wait a further two months before he made his debut as the Doctor, appearing briefly in The Parting of the Ways, but on 16th April, 2005 a new era was signalled – David Tennant and the Tenth Doctor were coming… Here’s the text of the original press release that made the announcement:

David Tennant confirmed as the tenth Doctor Who

David Tennant is confirmed as the tenth Doctor Who, it was announced today by Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning, following the recommissioning of the second series.

Tennant, whose recent credits include BBC THREE's critically-acclaimed drama series Casanova, BBC ONE's Blackpool and He Knew He Was Right, will star alongside Billie Piper who returns as Rose Tyler.

Julie Gardner, BBC Head of Drama, Wales says: "Christopher Eccleston has given an exceptional performance as the ninth Doctor.

"David Tennant is a great actor who will build on the excellent work already done by Christopher in establishing Doctor Who for a new generation."

David Tennant says: "I am delighted, excited and honoured to be the tenth Doctor!

"I grew up loving Doctor Who and it has been a lifelong dream to get my very own TARDIS.

"Russell T Davies is one of the best writers television has ever had, and I'm chuffed to bits to get the opportunity to work with him again.

"I'm also really looking forward to working with Billie Piper who is so great as Rose.

"Taking over from Chris is a daunting prospect; he has done a fantastic job of reinventing the Doctor for a new generation and is a very tough act to follow."

Executive producer/writer Russell T Davies adds: "Christopher Eccelston's wonderful Doctor has reinvented the role, so that it now appeals to the best actors in the land.

"I'm already writing David's first new adventure on board the TARDIS!

"Regeneration is a huge part of the programme's mythology, and I'm delighted that new, young viewers can now have the complete Doctor Who experience, as they witness their hero change his face!"

A new 13-part adventure and Christmas special begins filming in Cardiff in the summer for transmission on BBC ONE.

Game of Thrones Star to Guest in Doctor Who!

BBC - Doctor Who - Mon, 03/30/2015 - 7:01am

Having landed back in the UK fresh from touring the US, today Maisie Williams sets foot on the Doctor Who TARDIS to take up a guest role in the hit BBC One show that returns to our screens this Autumn.

Maisie has already found global fame and is renowned for her role as Arya Stark in the international fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. She also starred in the one-off docu-drama Cyberbully and was cast as one of the leads of Carol Morley’s drama The Falling. As well as beinga three-time Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee, in February of this year she was awarded with a Shooting Star Award at the Berlin Film Festival.

On her first day on set Maisie Williams said, “I'm so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it’s such a big and important part of British Culture. I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, added, “We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

A decade of Doctor Who

BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 03/26/2015 - 12:30pm

26th March 2005. A momentous day for Doctor Who. A new Doctor. A new Companion. And what a fantastic journey they’ve taken us on! We’ve spent the day celebrating the very first episode of the new era, ‘Rose’, and we’ve had an amazing response from fans across the globe.

Peter Capaldi is, of course, one of those fans. And he kicked the day off by recalling just how he felt when he sat down to watch the episode. An immensely personal video, and yet somehow Peter has captured the very same thoughts and emotions that we all experienced.

We published a very popular infographic revealing 5 things you never knew about Rose. Lots of you pointed out that you knew *almost* all of them…

In case your memory needed jogging, we also linked to a clip of the Doctor introducing himself to Rose and some galleries– behind the scenes shots (we hope the quality of our photography has improved over the last 10 years…), some TARDIS concept art, and some grabs from the episode.

Peter Capaldi celebrated 10 years at the Doctor Who Experience here in Cardiff (there’s a picture from the party at the top of this page). The highlight of the celebration? Peter led the audience from the Starlight and Ty Hafan charities, and a local primary school, in a rendition of Happy Birthday, and cut a cake shaped like a Cyberman!

But the day was not really about us – we had some lovely comments from you which we’ve reflected in our social media summary of the day. So perhaps it’s right that we leave it to a fan, @mightbeclara, to sum up what Doctor Who has meant to them: ‘thank you DW for shaping me and my childhood, and teaching me the value of friendship, courage and adventure.’
