BBC - Doctor Who - Thu, 11/21/2013 - 9:59am
Tonight at 9pm, An Adventure in Space and Time premieres on BBC Two. Immediately after it finishes at approximately 10.25pm, the same channel will show William Hartnell: the Original, a brief programme that reveals what happened to Hartnell after he left Doctor Who.
The five-minute documentary features rare archive footage and brand new interviews with many who worked with him, including Carole Ann Ford, Peter Purves and Waris Hussein as well as Matt Smith, Peter Davison and Hartnell’s granddaughter, Jessica Carney.
It’s a revealing and affectionate portrait of a much-loved actor and forms the perfect accompaniment to An Adventure in Space and Time.

BBC - Doctor Who - Wed, 11/20/2013 - 7:04am
BBC Radio 2 has got a special treat for Doctor Who fans tomorrow, Thursday, at 10.30pm. Right after An Adventure in Space and Time finishes you can continue your travels in the TARDIS with Who is the Doctor?, one of the most comprehensive radio documentaries on the Time Lord ever!
Who is The Doctor? is presented by Russell Tovey who many remember in the role of Alonso Frame in the Tenth Doctor adventures, Voyage of the Damned and The End of Time. The programme looks at the many eras of Doctor Who and examines why and how it’s lasted half a century. It also considers the impact of the show’s 2005 revival and sheds light on its origins back in the early 1960s.
Featuring new interviews with the cast and crew of the series, we’ll hear from Doctors Matt Smith, David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston and Sylvester McCoy plus companions Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper, Louise Jameson and the late Elisabeth Sladen.
Who is The Doctor? is on BBC Radio 2 tomorrow (Thursday) at 10.30pm and will be available on BBC iPlayer from Friday onwards.

The fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who has been reported by media across the world and here in the UK BBC News has delivered a number of reports and videos reflecting on the Time Lord’s half century.
Journalist Lizo Mzimba interviews Matt Smith and David Tennant on location and looks forward to The Day of the Doctor in this report and there’s a special video focussing on regeneration, looking at how the Doctor has transformed his appearance over the years. The show’s production designer, Michael Pickwoad, tells BBC News where he got his inspiration for the TARDIS from and in this video, Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat hints at what’s ahead in The Day of the Doctor…
A video entitled ‘Doctor Who - 50 years of memories’ promises to deliver, ‘Five decades in five minutes’… Does it succeed? Find out for yourself! If you’re after a more thoughtful piece you can try ‘Doctor Who at 50: Politics and religion in series analysed’ and if you’re a fan of the TARDIS, check out this gallery…

In it, I speak of first discovering Doctor Who and becoming a fan, founding the Gallifreyan Embassy, and eventually launching the podcast, Doctor Who: Podshock. Thanks to Brian for having me on, it was delight to do. You can check out the podcast yourself, the link is below with further details pertaining to the episode.

BBC - Doctor Who - Mon, 11/18/2013 - 12:04pm
Doctor Who was given the royal seal of approval today when Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Wessex, hosted a reception for the show in recognition of its 50th anniversary.
Back in 1879 Queen Victoria may have considered the Time Lord to be an enemy of the state but the Royal Family has obviously forgiven him as the cast and crew of Doctor Who, past and present, arrived at Buckingham Palace to help celebrate its half-centenary.
Current Doctor Matt Smith, along with former Doctors Tom Baker and Peter Davison and ‘War Doctor’ John Hurt were all presented to HRH The Countess of Wessex and it was perhaps fortunate they were on hand as two Daleks were also spotted in the palace!
Other guests included lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, Jenna Coleman (Clara), Catherine Tate (Donna), Lord Hall (Director-General of the BBC), Danny Cohen (Director of Television), Rhodri Talfan Davies, (Director, BBC Cymru Wales), Charlotte Moore (Controller of BBC One), Ben Stephenson (Controller, Drama Commissioning) and Doctor Who writers Toby Whithouse, Chris Chibnall and Gareth Roberts .
The Countess also met young competition winners who proudly showed Her Royal Highness their winning drawings of ‘The Queen’s TARDIS’ which were displayed by the actual TARDIS!
You can see photos of the guests arriving in our latest gallery.
Earlier this year Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall celebrated the 50th anniversary with a visit to the home of Doctor Who – BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock studios in Cardiff Bay. You can see photos of that event and enjoy a video of the visit now!

BBC - Doctor Who - Sun, 11/17/2013 - 10:28am
On 17 November, 1558 the Elizabethan era began when Queen Mary I of England died and was succeeded by her half-sister, Elizabeth I of England. We look back on one of history’s most iconic royals…
Queen Elizabeth I was one of the first historical figures seen on Doctor Who, appearing in the 1965 adventure, The Chase. During part 1 of the story the crew of the TARDIS don’t actually meet the monarch but they watch her discussing plays with Shakespeare. The Doctor encountered her at the close of The Shakespeare Code when she clearly considered him an enemy but later still, in The End of Time, he implies he shared a friendship with ‘Good Queen Bess’ although the full details never emerged…
Perhaps we’ll find out more in the 50th Anniversary Special, because as Strax reveals in the video above, the Time Lord will encounter her again in The Day of the Doctor…
Over at BBC History you can discover more about Queen Elizabeth I or find out about her incredible network of spies! There’s a fascinating video exploring her childhood or you can read about one of her greatest triumphs – the defeat of the Spanish Armada!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 11/15/2013 - 10:50am
We were thrilled and grateful to everyone who contacted us saying how much they loved The Night Of The Doctor and how exciting they found the new mini episode! The universal delight and sense of thrilled surprise was overwhelming and we’d like to offer sincere thanks to all those web sites that pushed to the adventure without revealing any of its secrets.
The revelations that The Night Of The Doctor sprang were jubilantly received by fans around the world and critics have already applauded the return of the Eighth Doctor. The secrecy surrounding the story enabled huge numbers of fans to watch and relish the surprises it held.
The Night Of The Doctor was our most ambitious mini episode yet, a 7- minute special written by Steven Moffat that plunges viewers into the chaos of the Time War where a spacecraft is hurtling out of control… But the TARDIS is on hand to help its pilot and we all know who will step from the blue box to offer assistance except… ‘I’m a Doctor!’ says a familiar voice. ‘But probably not the one you expected!’
Dead right! There he was - the Eighth Doctor himself - last seen in the Doctor Who TV Movie in 1996! It was a wonderful moment and Paul McGann was able to recapture the character immediately with all the wit and charisma that typified his take on the Doctor. We soon had another blast from the past, quite literally as the Doctor crash-landed on Karn, last seen in The Brain of Morbius. And for the first time ever, the dying Doctor was able to choose his next self. A spectacular regeneration and ‘the War Doctor’ appears… This version of the Time Lord, as played by John Hurt, was first seen in The Name of the Doctor, but here he looks much younger… Who was able to resist hitting ‘Play this again’ immediately?
And as day follows night, the 50th Anniversary special will be here soon! The Day of the Doctor premieres on BBC One on Saturday, 23 November at 7.50pm and you can see clips and trailers for that adventure now!

BBC - Doctor Who - Fri, 11/15/2013 - 9:17am
The Day of the Doctor will air on BBC One on 23 November and will be repeated on BBC Three on 24 November. As we’ve already announced, it will also be available in 3D to those with a 3D TV. So if you’d like to see the Doctor in a new dimension in the comfort of your own home, there are two ways you can watch the adventure in 3D.
You can either watch the episode in 3D via broadcast on your 3D TV or catch up on BBC iPlayer (more about that below). To avoid any disappointment, you might want to have a practice - you can use the 3D test card which will be on BBC Red Button HD before the first showing of Doctor Who in 3D. Please try out your viewing options in advance!
How to watch in 3D (Live broadcast)
To watch The Day of the Doctor in 3D on your TV with surround sound, you will need: a 3D capable TV, 3D glasses and your telly must be able to receive the BBC’s Red Button HD stream. If you’re not sure whether your TV is capable of displaying 3D, then please check your TV’s manual. When the episode is about to start, just switch to BBC Red Button HD, put your 3D TV into ‘Side-by-Side’ mode and enjoy!
Freeview HD/YouView 303
Virgin Media 994
If you want to record the episode, it’s easy to do because BBC Red Button HD is listed in the electronic programme guide for these platforms. In most cases the channel has been available for some time so you should be able to find it, but if not then you can try to retune your Freeview HD digital TV or box or you can find help at www.virginmedia.com, help.sky.com or www.freesat.co.uk.
Information about how to watch The Day of the Doctor in 3D can also be found on the BBC’s Red Button text page 998.
How to watch in 3D on the BBC iPlayer
It will be possible to watch The Day of the Doctor in 3D on BBC iPlayer for 7 days from the 23 November (after the broadcast has ended).
To enjoy in 3D, you’ll need compatible 3D equipment. Your options are:
- Connected 3DTV with iPlayer and 3D glasses.
- Connected Set-top-Box/Blu-Ray with iPlayer, a 3DTV and 3D glasses (3D is not available via Sky On Demand)
- PlayStation 3, with iPlayer, a 3DTV and 3D glasses
- Xbox 360, with iPlayer, a 3DTV and 3D glasses
- Virgin TiVo, with iPlayer, a 3DTV and 3D glasses
- YouView with iPlayer, a 3DTV and 3D glasses
- PC/Mac with a 3D Display, with iPlayer and 3D glasses
Are there any specific settings I need to set?
TVs or displays need to be set to “Side by Side” mode for iPlayer to work in 3D, so please refer to your manual if necessary. If your TV does not allow you to switch to 3D mode when using the internal iPlayer, you’ll need to connect the 3DTV (via HDMI) to use iPlayer from either a connected set-top-box, Blu-ray player, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. 3D is only available in the higher quality version of streaming, so you’ll need a sufficient internet connection.
We cannot provide specific guidance to individual set-ups, but we hope you’ll find this information useful.
Please be aware that the 3D episode will only be available on BBC iPlayer after the episode has been broadcast.
Whichever way you choose to watch, the Doctor has never looked so good!
