I have not heard anything of it as well.

  • Tom Baker is back as the Doctor!!!!!   5 years 24 weeks ago

This is the first time that I've head of this story.

I knew he was in the cast of 'Monarch of the Glen' and 'Little Britain' But this is news to me.

As to him being the Doctor - I have found no news story about it. I've checked BBC, the mirror, the guardian, digital spy and other sources.

Let me know where you heard this from. I'd like to check this out.

that was just as good. Beryl Reid is a bit shocking but whatever, not too bad. The change to the space ship was an interesting one. Once again, Adric is correct in that they were being too casual about announcing their presense as this idiot Doctor keeps waving about and yelling to be caught. Adric wanted to go back but I guess he wanted to come with the Doctor. Earlier a nice "make up" scene between the two of them and an earlier scene of Adric helping the Doc disarm a bomb. All well done, well acted, well scripted...all for once. Of course, the Cyberplan makes little sense. Why plant a bomb in a cave where it might be seen? Why put guards over it that might be seen? Why not just stick it in a hole someplace or a forest where no one might find it? How did it get to Earth? Why not detonate it right away? Why leave it there for so long? It does'nt really make sense.

Once again Matthew does a good job here and the Adric part, a shame that it's NOW only being written excellently, is well done. The guest stars are rising to the occasion and we hear our first "Brave heart, Tegan"  from the Doctor, apparently improvised by Davison.

When I first saw this, I didn't get the idea that the beam came from the spaceship but the Doctor explained that the crew probably didn't know anything about it. Then...why were the Cybermen or whatever was on the ship start killing crewmembers? Did they get too close to something? Explanations later and mindyou, those don't make much sense either but have fun, this story is full of tension and action...DW action that is, which means two fourth the action yu'd find in a movie like ALIEN. Wonder why that came to mind?

This is also a bit like the best of Cybermen as in the 1980s DWmagazine kept telling us how great TomB OF THE CYBERMEN was and how the other Cyber stories had bombs, weaknesses of the Cybermen exploited, Cybermen hiding and skulking as in THE MOONBASE, etc. The only thing missing was a Cybermat. Not that this was bad. EARTHSHOCK might just be the best CYBERMEN story ever...until the two parter RISE OF THE CYBERMEN in the new show.

That was a great start. Yes, the Doc, Nyssa and Tegan are sticking their heads up too high and could be shot as Davison comments on on the commentary but whatever. This episode builds nicely and creepily (is that a word?). The TARDIS scenes are super and this team is now a full fledged family. I love Tegan's look when the Doctor tells her, "Do you really think I'd be making all this fuss if it weren't?" She looks like a scolded puppy, bvacking off, for once. I also think most of what Adric says rings true to most teenagers or at least some of them, maybe not now but back then and maybe now too, who knows? I think what he says is true. The Doc never wants to be criticized...at least this Doc. Even Tom Baker's Doctor took criticism, sometimes from himself  as well as Romana and others. And almost all the other Doctors explained things ...to everyone. It does seem as if some time may have gone by but since the book BLACK ORCHID is brought up...who knows? That Adric feels made fun of, teased and ingnored in favor of Nyssa and Tegan seems apt and unfair of the Doctor to do. He does do al those things. And this Doc and Adric sitting down and talking...maybe the Doc meant his previous self. THEY got along. That Doctor cared about Adric a lot. This Doc...not so sure. I also love love love Adric's line, "You know since his regeneration, I think he's become decidedly immature."  I also love a very short bit when outside, the Doc is goaded by Tegan and Nyssa into at least accepting to look at Adric's calculations. He says, "I'm not promising anything."  To which Nyssa says, "no, of course not, Doctor."  At that moment, he's heading for the door of the TARDIS and Nyssa and Tegan exchange looks, knowing amused looks and as the Doctor hears Nyssa's comment late, he lately turns around in a sort of shock that she said it. That's brilliant!

The dino thing makes sense. Recently saw ANIMAL ARMEGGDEON and its was heart breaking. Cause Adric died. No just kidding. Cause it just was.

The guest cast is pretty good, the music tense and apt. The story moving along and the caves look like caves. The robot androids are pretty creepy and the gore , well disgusting really. If I didn't know it was the Cybermen at the end, I would have been totally suprised. Even so, I thought it was a good ending and a good cliffhanger.

Oh and Adric's also right about something always inteferring from he and the Doc having a talk or having any meaningful stuff going on. It happens again here! Oh and the Doc seems not to want to lose Adric for some reason and Adric seems to want the Doctor to stop him. Are these two a couple? :) Or maybe it's just parental and teen growing pains...either way they finally got the relationships correct here.

Yes, I agree, however, I feel the movie could have been SO much better. I mean it's a  five star movie out of five the way it is now but...if they did it more like the book and more like...I don't know with some explanation and background....then again maybe they'd have gotten into trouble doing that!

  • Let Me In/Let the Right One In (some spoilers)   5 years 24 weeks ago

Definitely a worthy Vamp flick.  1 must be the patient moviewatcher type though.  The MTV/VH1/Nickelodeon crowd may not be able to handle this type of pace, LOL! Tongue out

A fair ending. I like the way Nyssa is characterized as not gloating over the death of the android. I like how Adric is used, however, he's still the one making ALL the mistakes, such as in the end battle, he stumbles and alerts, accidentally, the aliens to the group being there. Tegan and Nyssa both come off better in this episode. The Doctor doesn't.

The Doctor's unnecessasily mean to both Tegan and Adric. He doesn't explain thing to either of them despite them both showing curiousity, he has snap comments for Adric and Tegan, he almost yells at Tegan outright in a temper outburst, and he is'nt at all grateful that Adric flies the Tardis to free him from what is esstentially a prison...in a room with glass windows that the Doctor can't get out of. Tegan tells Adric she's pleased to see him and from here the pair are actually quite friendly to each other, a friendship which I'm sure will cement itself in hundreds of episodes later from now, right?

Anyway Davison's Doctor comes off badly here in more ways than one. He's sarcastic, mean spirited, has'n't time for Adric, nor does he treat Tegan like  a friend at all (but I DO love his line to Tegan's, "Groggy, sore and bad tempered."  To that assesment of how she feels, he comments, "Oaah, almost your old self."  Richard Mace does a bit here and the five pretty much polish off the Terileptils, as in KILL THEM! Not that the things didn't deserve it for what they were about to do.

The whole fire ending is a good one. In the TARDIS scenes, at the end, Davison gives more nasty remarks to Adric's curious nature and sarcastic comments. The scene of Adric flying the TARDIS with Nyssa giving him confidence boosting is very, very good. I wish that they had put in the cross your fingers bit from FULL CIRCLE here. It's funny Adric knows the Doc so well that he bangs the console to get it going.

All in all a good story if a bit weak in the last episode but still head and shoulders above all else that follows for the most part.

    2-3

    2-3

This story is pretty good. It keeps attention going and is tradiational but lively. I love Adric's "Why is he never around when you need him!?" I also like the Pod set even though it doesn't match the exterior and hardly looks like it's been buried that deep and has two doors that are not buried but only one is seen from the outside! Still, Davison does a good job here and yet...he's aggravated by almost everyone, including Nyssa! Adric proves his bravery YET again but saving Richard Mace and by being very worried about Tegan, whom he's left in the house. A word about Tegan: Davison says she never really wants to be there and always wants to go home or sulkts about something. In many ways this is very true and tiresome in an adventure series, however, if it were you, realistically, would you want to go through some of the things she did? I mean realistically she'd want to just get home and  on with her job and her life. It doesn't make for a great adventurer charcater but...

The Doctor for some reason thinks the Miller can help him? Why? It doens't make sense. He should have just gone to the TARDIS to help Nyssa build the machine that will destroy the android. We get two good cliffhangers here, one with the Doc about to get his head chopped off again as in MASQUE OF MANDRAGORA and FOUR TO DOOMSDAY...and the other with the Doc pleading to Tegan, "I know you never listen to a thing I say..." as she's about to open a cage with plague infested rats.

The Terileptils make an interesting addition to the races in DW, liking both art and beauty AND war. I'm not too sure about the masks though. The body looks like an alien and the entire thing resembles a kind of fish but in some shots it looks magnificent and in others, it looks like a bad mask with holes for the eyes to see out of. It moves like an alien and the face has parts that move. Not sure about this new company making the monsters.

Their plan is digusting: kill humans using the plague so they can live here and thrive. They also want to use the Tardis.  And they destroy the sonic screwdriver, which seems to be the one from FURY FROM THE DEEP, however it underwent many many changes in fact and even the entire thing looks different from the pen like thing it was. In fact, it seemed the Doc changed it from the pen that Hartnell used. Thi sis foreshadowing Adric's death ("I feel like you've just killed an old friend). Oh and Adric gets captured saving Richard Mace, knocked out, gets away, claims to be stronger than Tegan (is he? On the dvd commentary, Janet claims Matthew or rather Adric wasn't butch enough and Matthew claims he didn't want to show her up!, all in good fun, at least here, for Fielding is most cruel on the commentaries about Matthew in WARRIORS OF THE DEEP), and helps Nyssa  small bit and then captured by the villagers. I still love him to pieces though and he looks good in this story. Later, he gets to fly the TARDIS, probably better than the Doctor.

Anyway two more good episodes that get the job done. I still think both Sutton and Fielding are terrible actresses. They are just not very natural and don't really come across sincere to me.

  • From the Beginning: The First Doctor   5 years 24 weeks ago

Idiom, I think my initial impressions of this episode were similar to yours. On the old website I had posted

Watched this last week, overall was quite a weak story. I am not entirely sure how original it would have seemed at the time, but the whole giant prop thing seems over done these days.

It struck me that the TARDIS crew were not actually necessary for the plot at all.
Forester kills Farrow. Makes a phoney call to Whitehall. Telephone operator realizes it isn't really Farrow and ulitmately gets the police to go and investgate. Our Heroes are merely observers.

The insecticide only seems to be present to ensure that none of the props - Worms, ants etc have to be realistically animated.
I would concur with the score a 4 or 5 out of 10 for me.

  • From the Beginning: The First Doctor   5 years 25 weeks ago

I've probably said this twenty million times before: LAND OF THE GIANTS is so much better than PLANET but tha'ts perhaps not a fair comparison as LAND was made in the US (1968 but started filming in 1966)and PLANET was made in the UK years before (1964?63?) although when you look at the years it's not as many as you might think. The travelers never appear together with the giants in PLANET but in LAND they do and it's all the better for it. The sets may be good in PLANET but better in LAND and the plot makes a bit of sense I guess. The inspector stops by on holiday, the killer doesn't really have a good plan to get rid of the body and Barbara, well, for some reason, doesn't want to tel the others she may be infected by the poison. The Doc also tells them not to look at the cat while he's looking at it...right in the eyes. Still it is possible to enjoy this story as the foursome work together to stop the killer. Has the effects been up to it, the story might have had some exciting squences ala HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS or LAND but ...watched one ep at a time, it's not bad and the sink bit is quite good. I liked it much better when I recently saw it then when I first watched it, perhaps aware of its shortcomings. Hartnell makes this much better than it has any right to be and even Susan seems quite okay. It also makes for a change that it takes place on present day Earth and I like the worm discovery. Not too bad and I'd give it a higher rating than I usually do or than Idiom gave it. Maybe 6 or 7 out of 10. Just for trying and Hartnell of course.
