Well that was weird. But good and Tegan is just seen once or so, on the ground, sleeping. Good. Todd is proving a more interesting companion that Tegan and Nyssa, yet again. Adric has a lot to do, mostly trying to escape the so called dome ,but it doesn't look like a dome. I must admit the first time I saw this I thought Panna's mumbo jumbo was just another of DW's time jumbles but I've since realized or found out it was a Buddist thing. Really? I wish it was explained better here but that's manmade spirtuality for you. Anyway Kuruna, Panna, and Aris as well as almost all the Kinda but the jester or trickster are interesting and different. I'm glad the Kinda cannot talk, one of the only aliens on DW to not do so. It makes a nice change and makes them very alien-----ish. The name Mara is only presented here and the cliffhanger is nice. Alot more tension arising and Hindle and Saunders both going off the deep end. And both are sort of...uhm...fond of Adric it would seem. Hindle's put off Adric's punishment from ep 2 (funny scene in ep2 is Hindle saying punishment to make Adric wash behind the ears). Again, Matthew Waterhouse makes for a great range of fear, bemusement, and craftiness. The Doctor  is called an idiot by Panna several times and he says nothing for the most part only that he's been called that before. In all, these episodes are not as gripping as a Tom Baker story (with maybe four or five exceptions) but they do manage to be different, do manage to create a world, nay a universe of possibilities and do manage to keep one thinking, and guessing and moving forward. Each story also seems to be different from each other. I also hoped the Doctor and Adric would travel on for many more adventures. Not to be.   Their coupling is soon to be ended. I also like how this Doctor leaves Adric, "He's very resourceful."

Indeed. Famous near last words? Anyway a good story and it must have a cracking end iwth the Mara realizing its full power in a terrific show of special effects? Right?

  • Poll anomaly   5 years 9 weeks ago

Me and others have had problem using the polls on the right-hand side. We click on a selection and then are sent to a page that has nothing to do with the poll with an error message (the one you have above).

Until this problem is fixed I reccommend that you vote on the poll in the middle column with the main articles. It seems to work fine there. So far the poll question has been placed with news articles.

    Hope this helps.

What's odd to notice is that during this time in the show, the producers and script editor (Saward sucks) and maybe the writers were trying to, maybe, emulate the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith with the Fifth and Tegan. Trouble is the situations, the writers and especially the actors, were not up to it. The actors don't really seem to like each other much less want to interact in THAT way, thus Davison and Fielding, even when they are saddled only wiht Turlough, don't really pull it off....AT ALL. The Fifth to me always seemed to want Tegan to go until the last moment when she actually does but more on that later.

I love it when Adric's  a part of the action and here he's center and he tries to save the Doctor yet again but fails again. He steals a key and makes the Doctor play a game to try to get it, much like his earlier self. The other thing is that the Third Doctor used to do what Adric basically did, hide a coin or another object and seemingly make it vanish. Somewhere I read that it happened in COLONY IN SPACE but I also know he did it in AMBASSADORS OF DEATH. In any event, the story moves along well disguising the fact that the Doctor's been imprisoned in the dome for a very long time, giving Adric much to do (and despite the ignoring from her and her acting like  a biatch, Adric worries about her when the Doc doesn't seem to but perhaps that's not fair, he does ask about her too), and keeping Tegan in the nightmare realm...uhm, until she gives in to the Mara and gets out bodily...is a good idea. I wouldn't have minded if she died in this story. The Kinda are suffiently puzzling and ...uhm, very very good looking for the most part. The two female Kinda Panna and the girl appear and give Saunders a strnage box that enlightens or changes him. He brings it back to the unhinged Hindle who makes the Doctor open the box into a great cliffhanger. Yet we know it didn't really kill Saunders when he opened it. So...we know it probably won't do anything to them.

Again, another good episode, tension filled in a way. Nyssa doesn't appear at all. Thank Goodness. :) Davison still seems a   bit flat and his Doctor seems in over his head ALL the time. No other Doctor was like that except maybe Hartnell in his early stories and maybe later on too. It's not a bad thing, just very noticeable. OHHHH and wouldn't Todd make a much better companion than Tegan and Nyssa. She certainly works well with this Doctor AND with Adric! And she knows something...beliveably.

I must also say the worst includes BOY TIME FORGOT and the ideas of : Peri's mom exploding thanks to the Doctor's stupidity; Tegan getting a deadly disease; Evelyn getting a deadly disease; and probably most of what happens to Crizz when he "dies".  I also hate the whole vampire project thing and the 7th and psuedo clone 6th Doctor story. Oh and I HATE SPARE PARTS totally. Mostly because it seems to finalize that Adric can't be saved but then...oh dear. Some good scenes are in it though but again, it makes the Doc responsbile for the  evolution of the Cybermen. I hate that too.

Best: Anything with Benny and the 7th Doctor together; Benny's son Peter; the evoluation of Ace and especially with Hex;  the whole Death vs the 7th Doctor; Hex's link to the Doc's past; the whole 5th Doctor thing where he is in limbo while regenerating into the 6th and in fact, that whole storyline wiht he and Nyssa in four or three short stories; the 6th Doctor on the phone iwth a woman, brilliant; the singalong Pirate story was amazing esxcept for a melancoly ending and that's just all off the top of  my head!

Hmm... Odd indeed. I wonder if this is related to the previous issue with the sidebar poll and our spam filtering? I had hoped the latest update to the filtering software had addressed it. I tested it out afterwards and all seem to be working as it should. I think (or suspect) it may only happen when the poll appears twice on the same page (i.e. side bar and main column). If that is the case, perhaps I can turn off the side bar poll until the poll scrolls off the front page... and then switch them (take it off the front page and activate the sidebar).

There is one option that you left off the poll.

I do watch BBC America but I had to get a larger package to get it. I have dish network and it is not part of the basic programming (Dish 150 (channels)) set but you can get it as part of a large package (Dish 200 (channels)).

The missing choice should be - Yes, I watch it as an extra package.

  • FOUR TO DOOMSDAY   5 years 9 weeks ago

Oh and one more error concerning Adric: you would think he would know what photosyethesis is since he came from a swamp planet or rather  a planet that had a swamp on it. The writers realy blew it concerning Adric (and to a larger extent Tegan) in FOUR TO DD. He also helped prepare slides in FULL CIRCLE so he should know more scientifically and as the writer had more to go on for Adric than any other character here, Adric is the one that he should have gotten terribly RIGHT but he's the one the writer gets terribly WRONG! Even through all of that, Adric still, IMO, comes off as the best more interesting companion. but this is his weakest story.

  • The Big Screen   5 years 9 weeks ago

Okay I hope Tennant DOES NOT make animated boredoms or even return once unless it's for something like the 11 Doctors. I also hope this movie plan falls through like the dozen that have in the 1990s. Truthfully I won't miss Tennant at all. He's overstayed his welcome just like RTD and have outlived all the good they've done and outdone undone all the good stuff.

Also frankly, if they were going to make a movie ARMY OF GHOSTS/DOOMSDAY would have been the one to go with. I'm afraid now we'll just get a bunch of crap.

I also quite like RTD's New Adventure novel (can't remember the name so that speaks volumes) but it's very good and could be a movie easily...

  • The Big Screen   5 years 9 weeks ago

For Davis and Tennant to create a big screen movie at this point is akin to Jay Leno turning over the reigns of the Tonight Show and then starting up a brand new show an hour earlier.  It just a little crass.

I hope Tennant continues to make animated adventures and guest appearances but the work of previous doctors should never overshadow the current doctor.   That's just bad form.  Tennant is running the risk of becoming that lovable relative who stands with his hand on the door knob and talks for another hour after saying his goodbyes.

A fitting end. Tegan doesn't get reprimanded as she should but Adric does. Adric of course turns on Monarch and helps the Doctor and once again takes command as the main companion. A few questions remain: Nyssa at one point tells Adric her air is running low but nothing's done to help her and it's forgotten about. The poison: the Doctor throws it at Monarch and ...he shrinks? He doesn't seem to be dead either and the script says he turns back into a toad? WTF? Anyway the action is better in this ep and the Doc's plan makes sense but Monarch is too sedate a villain. I think there are deleted scenes of him trying to get into the Tardis...which is strange as the Doc and Tegan upon reTARDISing in, leave the door open in time honored blooper tradition. Persuasion ends up in a ridiculous position. The space walk scenes are not bad at all, better than memory allows and even if they don't make scienfic sense, they are fun and nice to see. All in all a better ep and a story that is not that bad. It also has the first cliffhanger at the very end into the next story, something that hasn't been done for a long, long time, possibly since Pertwee's DALEK MASTER...I mean FRONTIER IN SPACE into PLANET OF THE DALEKS and then before that back into  Troughton's last season. It's a nice thing to have but again, Nyssa will be sidelined. If you have four companions, chances are good this will happen if your writers can think of what to do with four of them. Proving that Nyssa or the poorly turned out Tegan should have been written out. Nice to see Davison turn out his pockets as Tom often did and also to put himself into that trance state and to resist the cold temps of outer space.

A bit more action but not much. Though I must say the direction is sharp here, directed by trhe same director of KEEPER OF TRAKEN, he makes you feel a lot of action has happened even though it really hasn't. Why Monarch waited this long to try to stop the Doctor and kill Nyssa (to make her an android more specifically) is beyond me but it does make him a patient villain. His plans seem both logical and then mad (he believes he's god and will meet himself at the beginning of the universe?WTF?). The guest actors are very strong in all counts. Yet another SPACE: 1999 link is the actress who plays Enlightenment (I believe she played Tanya in 1999 in some first season eps and possibly even one second season ep).

The trouble here is still with the regulars and how they are written. Adric is nothing like Adric at all and the problem was discussed above I think. Tegan. Ahh, yes, until now she was just fearful and upset and rightly. In this ep, however, she panics. The dvd text tells us that she was deliberately made to be this way: in the first three stories she was supposed to usurp the Doctor's leadership over himself and Adric and take over, her brash overconfidence making her a liability. Well wtf? First of all, I can see Tom Baker squashing that. With the less in control Davison (that changes fast as he is the main reason JNT gets rid of Adric; Nyssa was supposed to go), the writers and silly producer and sillier script editor (and I mean Eric Saward and maybe even Root) made Tegan obnoxious, overprotective of Earth and the TARDIS and just plain annoying. SHE should have went. In any event, her scenes of stealing the TARDIS are just annoying and embarassing to watch as she overacts, cries, and laughs as she gains the ability to dematerializes. She sucks. In fact, she's left the Doctor and Nyssa to be killed in the event that she wants to go warn Earth...but she knows she can't fly the TARDIS. No wonder the Doctor didn't want her to be on board after this and tries to get her back to where she belongs...amid much harassement. I actually am annoyed that so much of the time Waterhouse had left on the show was filled with the annoyed, annoying, nag/boss Tegan and here she's at her worst, knocking Adric out (although to be fair, the way he's being written, as a brat, this time he deserved it). NO ONE here, save Waterhouse, understood Adric or knew how to use him.

It's easy to see how he might just think Monarch's abilities are interesting and when people are about to die at the end of their natural life span they might just want to become part of Monarch's process but none of that is stated. He just sides with Monarch and starts telling about the Doctor, prompting Nyssa to tell him to shut up. AGAIN, she gets the more scientific bits, using the Doc's pencil and sonic screwdriver to...do something in the next ep (stop the androids). Here, she's somewhat stupid too as instead of playing along with Monarch, she protests and then is surprised when they hypnotize her and try to make her one of the androids by putting her in another SPACE: 1999 prop (or one very like one in MISSION OF THE DARIANS).

It's still strange to see two companions fight physically and Tegan knocks Adric down and out and his recovery is pretty funny to watch. It's stranger still to see the Doctor tell Tegan earlier that if they try to warn Earth, they will be laughed at. Has he forgotten thanks to his regeneration that he was a member of UNIT and they fought all manner of invasions from outer space and even once from under the sea?  UNIT certainly would not laugh at him. The dolt. Another thing is that this Doctor is the least interesting character here and that even includes the "NEW" stupider Tegan and Adric.  He's just very flat and boring. I didn't notice at the time but he is but then again maybe I"m still comparing him to Tom Baker's better Doctor. Davison may be still finding his way but it's still...well, he's still quite dull in most ways. He doesn't even have the bad puns going at this point.

Again, though, even with all of that, this ep is not as bad as the story's reputation holds and there are far worse stories to come (I won't list them all but I might have already elsewhere) and far worse companions to suffer through.

  • Is the Doctor gay?   5 years 9 weeks ago

1-so let's review: the Doctor travels with many women and girls, most of them very pretty and shapely. And if we consider the audios, of a variety of age differences. He doesn't have sex with any of them and barely keeps a relationship going with any of them at all and nothing that continues and he uses the excuse that he's going to have to watch them die.

2-the Doctor seems to ignore his male companions for the most part when there are two or more companions but when he's alone with Jamie and/or Adric he holds their hands, gets more physical with them, puts his hands around them from behind, and even sleeps nearby them if not even having one of their heads in his lap!

3-The Doctor seems to try to have relationships with girls, especially Jo Grant and Sarah Jane Smith. He's hugged Liz closely. He seems real upset when Jo leaves and leaves her party early, drinks a bit, and doesn't really mention her much. He almost never mentions Liz and we never see her leaving scene. He's most upset when Sarah leaves, even though he seems to have made up the excuse for her leaving...rules indeed or maybe the Master knowing Sarah is his strength, was jealous or something. And did something to make her leave. None of his relationships with any female from Earth or as much as we know from anywehre has worked out and / or lasted. Grace leaves him. Dodo leaves him without saying goodbye.

4-He appears to want the world to think he is hetero and interested in girls but even the Brig seems to know there will always be a latest model.

5-after sex pots and skinny bodied health freaks and big boobed girls, he goes back to being in uncle mode for the 7th Doctor and "nuturing" Ace by torturing her with past scares for her and under the guise of making her better.

6-in unconscious mode he kisses Grace to get her to come with him. She doesn't. The girls probably see something gay in the Doctor or know he will never reciprocate or can't or won't.

7-the Doc's probably been married but even that didn't last for whatever reasons, IF Susan is his grand daughter.

8-No one no girl, not even Rose ("and we're arguing over the Doctor") seems to think the Doctor will make it with her no matter what they do.

9-the Doctor literally flees the one male we've seen him kiss in the entire series...and makes a lame excuse up for that. He seems jealous of Capt Jack's overt sexuality ("oh stop" and "There's a time and a place").

10-When even with females of his own race (we think as far as we know, then there's the whole debate over Time Lords are Gallfreans or Gallefreans are Time Lords or are Time Lords even  really natives of Gallifrey or the only type of Gallfreans and even the debate over if the Doctor's even Gallfrean or a real Time Lord or something more of even god!) the Doctor doesn't seem to do any more than juvenile immature story telling and slight admiration of the type that makes him want to stand up and say, "She likes me!" but not much more. And even they leave him. Romana 1 is very sexy and she changes for no apparent reason. Romana 2 can't stand the thought of going back to Gallfirey but perhaps neither can he WITH her and having done nothing WITH her! ANd maybe she's embarassed too.

    11-Jamie.

    12-Adric

13-He threatens to kiss one of his companions for the first time in the Hartnell era ...and it's Ian!

    14-Turlough!

15-Leela, Peri, Rose, Martha: and he does nothing much with them.

16-The Tenth Doctor's macho hetero posturing is just a cover.

17--ah yes but you're thinking he turned human and had fallen in love with Joan (TWICE if you count the novel of HUMAN NATURE) but ahh, yes, he had to turn into someone else, basically a fabrication in order to fall in love and chances are that he didn't have sex wiht her but maybe he did. In any event, the Master turned into a nice old man which isn't him at all so the Doctor in order to love a woman successfully and have a relationship with a woman has to change himself utterly so that (and to prove he's changed, he allows a boy to be spanked...well then again maybe he's not changed from his gay way all that much after all; and allows himself to be somewhat cowardly but not in the end) he's not the Doctor at all.

    18-other stuff I haven't thought of.

19-why does the Doctor sometimes flirt with men and they with him but he shies away from that and instead seeks female attention that he knows will never amount to anything just like all the other 39 females he's sought. Including Kylie. KYLIE!

20-he seems almost resigned to the fact that he'll not love Martha and/or Donna that way.

21-he always seems to want more from his female companions but almost never goes for it or even tries until Doc10...who fails at it miserably. He's not a dope so tha'ts strange in itself. Perhaps he wants to fail so he can finally realize HE'S GAY!
