The Character Options 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver Review

The2ndDoctor - Posted on 26 April 2010

The postman delivered my 11th Doctor This morning so here's my review after a little play with it.

As you can see in the photo above I have placed the Sonic Screwdriver next to a hockey puck and my 2nd Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (self made) to get an Idea of scale. The packaging that the 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver comes in is fairly stirdy which is good concidering it had to come through the post, and within the packaging are instructions on not only how to use the Screwdriver Light, sound and popping action.  But also how to install the three watch cell batteries that it comes with, for this you will need a very small or watch makers crosspoint screwdriver.  If this is a present for a child then it's best that an Adult does this AFTER READING THE INSRTUCTIONS otherwise there is a possibilty that the Sonic Screwdriver could get Brocken Very quickly, before it's even gotton played with.

Otherwise the Sonic Screwdriver has two sonic sounds, and the spring action for the head of the Screwdriver. It might be a good Idea not to do this too near anybody's face as it does have quite a pop. in the base, under a cap is a Button to use the sound effects when the Sonic Screwdriver is in the "Open" position.  Build wise quility is quite good and should give hours of pleasure to Children young and old (Those who haven't grown up yet like myself or cosplayers)  On my Professor How Facebook group I've posted a short video showing one of the Sounds and the Poping action of the head. follow th link Bellow.

The sound button is supposed to also work when the screwdriver is in the open position but a design flaw has the housing go to far for the switch to contact the switch on the battery housing.

What do u do to get it working again?

The instructions say that the sounds WILL work when when extended IF you use the red button located under the cap on the base. Also I discovered that there are FOUR sound and light actions. To activate the different sounds rapidly press the button 3 times for the third sound and 4 times for the fourth sound holding down on the last press. This should give you the other available sounds. As a footnote, the sounds on my son's screwdriver have stopped working twice now. The first time they stared working again on there own and now they are not working again. The lights still work though...

If you do not like the end button, slide the extendable end down a little when it is extended (push it towards the handle a bit) whilst holding the button. it counteracts the flaw in the design.

and by the way to all viewers, "it was NOT a fault in the design. the end button is used when it is extended"~Stephen Moffat

My childs screwdriver lost it's sound in less than 48 hours after purchase. We tried the "vertical rapping/button holding" and it began periodically losing sound until the rapping method no longer works and now there is no sound all together. Does anyone know if this is a wiring issue causing a break or short in the circuit going to the sound mechanism? Is this something that is encountered with all 11D screwdrivers or is this just found in a few?

Anyone else that has had this happen come up with a working fix or have an actual response from Character Options on the issue?

my sonic has stopped working completely aswell if anyone knows how to fix it please help

After further research, there seems to be an isssue with the sound chip from the first hundred or so assembly runs. The chip seems to short out after extended use. The concensus is that it is tied to the repeated use of the "secret sounds" though at this time I cannot confirm or deny this until I can get a more detailed response from Character Options (I'm in the US contacting via email). Character Options is aware of the chip error and has supposedly fixed the issue for all later releases. This may be the reason why person A's sonic will not work after 24 hours of play while person B's sonic has lasted fer weeks.

I have made a request to CO (as suggested by someone in a Dr. Who forum) for a replacement chip. I will be sure to post here once I get a yes/no from them.

If anyone noticed during the "Amy's Choice" episode, the Doctor activated the screwdriver from the extended position using the side button (like he was flipping a switch) instead of the back button. Red button may be intended, but side button still needs to operate it.

Here's the response, like promised...

I did not recieve a direct response on why the chips went bad, but CO is replacing my sonic with a new one. Unfortunately the new, NEW design only has one sound (BOO!!). This tells me that the short is possibly tied to the number of sounds and not necessarily the secret sounds.

To receive your replacement, just email Characer Options customer service at CustomerService@charactergroup.plc.uk

Everyone's complaining that their sound is broken, but my light is the one that broke first!! is there any way to fix just the light? new batteries..? please help!
