Were They Right? Gillian Anderson in Doctor Who?

The date was 23 April 2009. The Telegraph runs the following story about Gillian Anderson being cast as The Rani in Doctor Who (see link and quote below). Since that time we have seen a year of specials starring David Tennant and a whole new series starring Matt Smith. Where's Gillian Anderson? We are still waiting...
Gillian Anderson being lined up for Doctor Who appearance - Telegraph: "The American star would play the part of the renegade Time Lady The Rani, a glamorous but evil scientific genius previously played in the series by Kate O'Mara in the 80s. An insider told the Daily Express newspaper: 'Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following and it's felt that it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who."
Daily Express and your "insider": You are busted!
File this under Patrick Stewart being cast in Doctor Who, Johnny Depp cast as the Doctor in a new movie, and oh yeah, Matt Smith leaving after his first year.
