Michael Gough has Passed Away at 94 (or 95)

The Celestial ToymakerDoctor Who Monthly has reported via Twitter this morning the sad news of the death of actor Michael Gough. He will be remembered by Doctor Who fans as the Celestial Toymaker in the story of the same name (The Celestial Toymaker) in 1966 with the first Doctor (William Hartnell) and Councillor Hedin in the 1983 story, Arc of Infinity with the fifth Doctor (Peter Davison).

Alfred PennyworthYou may also recall him for his parts on the big screen such as the trustworthy butler Alfred Pennyworth in the 1989 Batman film as well as its sequels, Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), and Batman & Robin (1997).

Also included in his long list of credits is Sleepy Hollow (1999) playing Notary Hardenbrook.

He was once married to Doctor Who companion Anneke Wills (Polly in the 1st and 2nd Doctor's eras). They had been married from 1962-1979.

He was 94 (or 95) when he died. Coincidentally, his birthday was November 23rd (1917 or 1916 — his birth certificate had been reported lost and there has been some question his actual birth year). Another matter of coincidence is that he had been good friends for decades with Alan Napier, the actor who played Alfred in the 1960s Batman TV series.

More sad news with another Doctor Who actor passing away.

I (just about) remember watching The Celestial Toymaker and thought it was a great story - added to by the excellent acting of Michael Gough.

Cheers, daveac

It's a shame that the story doesn't exist today in its complete form. Dave, you are one of the fortunate that saw it all when it was originally transmitted.
