Early edition due to my travel plans. I have tried to make it as accurate as
possible, but there was less time to check.

For some of you reading This Week In Doctor Who, change is coming. Outpost
Gallifrey is completely retiring its News Page and Doctor Who Forum. This column
has been on the news page at for some
time. If you read the column there, or on Outpost Gallifrey's RSS feed, then
your final edition on these sources comes out Saturday July 25 (Outpost
Gallifrey closes the news and forums on July 31st, with the site focusing
exclusively on the Gallifrey conventions in LA each February).

Alternate sources for This Week In Doctor Who:
1) Subscribe to the Yahoo Group for This Week In Doctor Who (as noted at the top
of the column).
2) Read the Yahoo Group on the web without subscribing.
3) Set up the RSS feed (as noted at the top of the column) so you can read new
4) Go to one of these newsgroups - rec.arts.drwho and rec.arts.drwho.moderated .
It will appear around the same time as the Yahoo Group posting.
5) - This Week In Doctor Who
has a new agreement with the Gallifreyan Embassy site supplying the column as
one of their blogs. I expect there will be some tweaking in future weeks, and
the link may change.
6) Other web mirrors may go up in the near future. Stay tuned.

This Week In Doctor Who has been proud to be associated with Outpost Gallifrey
in one form or another since July 1998 when the column began. The column will
stay on the OG News Page till its end.

UK - BBC HD has special repeats of Doctor Who at the
Proms (5:15PM) and Planet Of The Dead (8:30PM) this Saturday 20 June. Only
people with BBC HD will get these broadcasts. BBC HD likes to do extra repeats
to fill schedule holes - now that Doctor Who has an HD episode, it can take
advantage of this.

For press releases on Doctor Who, keep an eye on the BBC Press Office and C21 Media .

This Week In Doctor Who Western Hemisphere
June 20, 2009 - Vol 1, No 25
The Guide to North and South American Doctor Who TV Listings
by Benjamin F. Elliott

We're a day early, so pardon any mess.

LATIN AMERICA - People + Arts - at the end of the current Doctor Who run, you're
substiting Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in its place? Seriously? Torchwood or
Sarah Jane Adventures weren't available? Primeval? Lost? Charlie Jade? Or
anything else? Just seems like a very uninspired choice to take the slot.

CANADA - CBC TV is not through with Doctor Who just yet. CBC repeats Series 4
(the 2008 episodes) Sundays at 11PM all time zones (11:30PM Newfoundland)
starting this Sunday the 21st. The run begins with Partners In Crime. Voyage Of
The Damned is skipped again. CBC could surprise us, but it looks more and more
likely that Voyage will have its Canadian English Language premiere on SPACE. We
do not know if Doctor Who is getting this run on the broadcast channel (which
just about everybody in Canada should be able to see, along with many Americans
in border regions) due to Series 4's popularity, because CBC needed emergency
filler, or if the repeat rights would not last long enough to show the episodes
again on CBC Bold. Assume this is the final hurrah for Doctor Who on free to air
TV in Canada (unless SPACE's owners repeat episodes on broadcast stations they
own - like they did with Battlestar Galactica in the past).

CANADA/USA - SPACE's next Doctor Who broadcast is Planet Of The Dead on Saturday
25 July (no time slot announced yet). BBC America's premiere of new to US Who is
The Next Doctor on Saturday 27 June (9PM, Midnight, 3AM Eastern - 75 minute time

USA - WHRO is not dropping Doctor Who or their British TV
night at the end of the month. Their July schedule now shows British programming
every Saturday, a change from what I previously saw. WHRO is airing Tom Baker
episodes, so there will still be 2 stations airing classic Doctor Who on Earth
(KBTC 28 Tacoma airs Peter Davison episodes).

USA - KTEH is taking votes now on their Doctor Who Youtube
contest. See KTEH's Doctor Who blog (link at KTEH's schedule entry) for contest
details. The winner of the six contenders gets to host a Doctor Who marathon.
Doctor Who returns on Sunday 28 June at 11PM (new day - the Friday slot goes to
a different show) with Doomsday.

USA - Doctor Who - Series 3 (The Runaway Bride and the 13 episode 2007 series
with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) are now distributed to Public TV stations
by BBC Worldwide Americas, not American Public TV. Series 4 also seems to be
available to buy - start date for Series 4 on Public TV stations is unknown. BBC
Worldwide Americas also distributes classic Doctor Who to stations.

The public TV stations known to have bought The Runaway Bride and Series 3:
WXXI 21 Rochester, NY
WTTW 11 Chicago, IL (expected July/August 2009)
WGVU/WGVK 35,52 Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo, MI
WILL 12 Urbana, IL
WTVP 47 Peoria, IL (currently in first run)
Iowa Public TV
Idaho Public TV
Wisconsin Public TV
Milwaukee Public TV (currently in first run)
KUED 7 Salt Lake City, UT (currently in first run)
OETA Oklahoma (currently in first run)
KLRU 18 Austin, TX (currently in first run)
Alaska Public TV (currently in first run)
WSKG/WSKA 46,30 Binghamton/Elmira, NY (currently in first run)

Now, I am confident that there are more stations with rights to Series 3 than
that. But these are the stations who have contacted me. Somehow I doubt that BBC
Worldwide Americas is going to send out a note with the stations who bought in
like American Public TV did, leaving us in the dark till a station comes forward
or it appears in their schedules.

Series 2 is currently available to public TV stations in an American Public TV
package until March 31, 2010. For the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have
bought the rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required
to do so. American Public TV is no longer offering Series 1 - I do not know if
BBC Worldwide Americas will offer those stations to public TV stations now or

2 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run
(1963-1989), but not New Who. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA is airing Peter Davison
episodes. WHRO 15 Norfolk, VA is airing Tom Baker episodes. WHRO is not dropping
Tom Baker - an updated schedule shows their British Saturday night continue.

And now, the listings:

cast of many. There is a feed for studio shows and a feed for live shows.
2) Also home to the Sonic Newsdriver, Louis Trapani's periodic rundown of new

Doctor Who got a mention, as the column now appears on the Gallifreyan Embassy
site among other places.

Radio Free Skaro
The 3 Canadians (Warren, Steven, Chris) get together on the weekends for about
an hour or more to discuss the latest in Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sarah Jane
in a fairly amusing manner. When one is away, the 4th Canadian (Katrina) will
Current episode:
#145 - "The Lament Of Steven" - Steven Schapansky has always thought of himself
as the calm member of the Radio Free Skaro insane asylum. Then the gang did a
commentary on the episode Father's Day. And well - everything changed ....
Coming Soon:
#146 - "Insert Jokey Title Here" - Due to little editing time I'm not going to
speculate on what the RFS team should call the episode. Since they are looking
at The Empty Child, it might be interesting if one of them watches the CBC print
while one watches the DVD print. Afterwards get on the phone with SPACE, the CBC
print was used by SciFi, BBC America, and the PBS syndication deal. If SPACE
doesn't know to insist on a fixed version, no doubt they will get stuck with it
And on Sunday July 26:
Commentary on "Planet Of The Dead", scheduled by coincidence just a few hours
after SPACE's premiere of the episode in Canada and just a few hours before BBC
America's premiere of the episode in the USA.

DWO Whocast
Trevor from Australia and Marty from the UK talk Doctor Who with themselves,
others, and teddy bears dressed as doctors. Now with a rock version of the
opening theme, the Whocast continues to ask the questions that pop in to their
heads. Regular correspondent - James. Frequent guest - Michael of the Tin Dog
Current episode:
#124 - The Whocast team review some things. First - these hosts, like Michael of
Tin Dog Podcast, had bad experiences with Delta And The Bannermen in the past.
As the DVD release comes, they watch to give a review. Er, their reaction is
somewhat different to Michael's. Meanwhile, the Big Finish Companion Chronicle
The Mahagony Murders grabs their interest.

Tin Dog Podcast
UK based podcast looking at the latest in Doctor Who, Torchwood, or Sarah Jane
Adventures. New episodes ever 2 weeks or so.
Current episodes:
#92 - Delta And The Bannermen. 1987 - The Tin Puppy is horrified by the story
Delta And The Bannermen. Then his Betamax fails to record the story, allowing
Tin to forget the story for 22 years. 2009 - with the release of the DVD,
Michael returns to face a story that scared him (for the wrong reasons) the
first time. Does the memory cheat? If the tension is too great, the iTunes
descriptions gives away his reaction.

West, Dave AC, Colin, and other Doctor Who fans liked the live Doctor Who:
Podshocks so much that they wanted to keep talking afterwards. The resulting
show covers Doctor Who, anything else sci-fi related, and can go wildly off in
all directions. Chats open 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Current episode - 94. Superheroes Run Amok!
Upcoming episodes (titles and topics subject to change):
Sunday 2PM EDT/11AM PDT/7PM BST - 95. Bring A Book
28 June 2PM EDT/11AM PDT/7PM BST - 96. The Man Behind The Curtain
and on Sunday 26 July - the real 100th episode. How does a show like this
celebrate its 100th episode? We'll find out.

Two Minute Time Lord
A bite-sized commentary and revew show. Host Chip's interest was rekindled by
the 2005 revival. He believes in balancing old fandom and new viewers, respect
for the past and breaking the rules. He tries to keep his pontifications to 120
seconds, because we're ALL in a hurry these days.
Current Episodes:
#30 - Is It Time For A Religious Companion? In the first of Chip's 3 part series
of controversial topics, Chip looks at religion and Doctor Who companions.
Personally (as a Presbyterian), I think Steven Taylor was a Protestant, either
Anglican or Methodist.
#31 - The Polyamorous Doctor. Love and the Doctor. In the second of Chip's 3
part series of controversial topics - could the answer to the Doctor's love
issues be that he simply loves multiple people romantically at the same time?
Future - #32 will have something to do with politics, as the 3 controversial
topics were religion, sex, and politics.

Staggering Stories
A wild, wandering podcast with Doctor Who and the other flavours of the moment
winding together roughly once every 2 weeks. The website's main focus is on
stories collected through the years. They like Daleks and Pertwee's head, don't
they? (Disclaimer - I wrote a Mr. Dalek story for them, and they published it.
I'm infiltrating all these podcasts and sites. Bwa-ha-ha.)
Episode 47 - "When Assassins Go Deadly" - Andy, Adam, Keith, Fake Keith, and
Jean look at the DVD release of the famous Tom Baker serial The Deadly Asassin.
Ashes To Ashes is getting to them. A choose your own adventure game fails to get
out of hand, much to everyone's surprise. And other stuff that looks odd on the
page but has caused several listeners to crash their cars over the years.
Coming soon - Episode 48. "When An Old Member Of The Team Starts Another Show" -
well, whatever title the episode has, it was recorded days ago and should go out
by Monday.

The Flashing Blade Podcast
Tony Gallichan returns to podcast land with new podcaster Jo! to look at Doctor
Who and matters of interest. Tony grew up with UK fandom and knows all the
cliches. Jo! - didn't. Flashing Blade wants to be known as the podcast that
would like a nice cup of tea.
Current episode - 2. Jo! and the Tony begin a look at Big Finish with the 8th
Doctor audio "Hothouse". A look at classic Tom Baker story "City Of Death" also
ensues. Debate over Ashes To Ashes Series 2. And Planet Of The Dead - have we
finally found reviewers who like it? Er, no.

The Minute Doctor Who Podcast\

Video (sometimes just audio) podcast looking at Doctor Who projects. Episodes
are usually under 5 minutes long.
Current episode - 16. Video installment. Luke exposits that Planet Of The
Spiders was not the last Jon Pertwee Doctor Who story. Nor was The Five Doctors
or Dimensions In Time. So, if Pertwee was not in Pertwee's last story, which
story was it. Luke solves the confusion in your minds.

Doctor Who Review Today
Live editions Late Fridays 1AM EDT/10PM PDT/6AM BST every couple of weeks
Robert Carrie King reviews Doctor Who topics (DVDs and news, mostly) on this
Talkshoe program. Frequent cast member on CIA: Cultdom In Audio.
Most recent episode - June 12/13. Episode 36. The Missing episodes of Doctor Who
and, from new Who, The Impossible Planet.

The Tennantcast
Kelsey, Kari, and friends get together to dish on the latest David Tennant news.
And at least for 2009, that still includes Doctor Who. They answer Chip's
thoughts about younger podcasting - these are the youngest Who-related
podcasters I know of. Their current plan is to do an episode each week, as they
are enthused by their topic and believe that practice makes better podcasts.
5 - The Rickcast. A somewhat shorter episode, as talk on David Tennant melds
into a talk on Alan Rickman. Cake and giddiness ensue. Note - on iTunes this was
listed as episode 4. Episode 4 was also listed as episode 4.

Keeping an eye out - still no sign of the next episode. Hmm.
The Wailing Fangirl
Samantha (Romana 2) explores Doctor Who and fandom in Australia, sometimes with
the aid of the ladies of the Gallifreyan Time Love Brigade. Frequent cast member
on CIA: Cultdom In Audio.
Current episode - 8. A look at the First Doctor's Era.
Coming soon - they were planning to gush poetically when Planet Of The Dead
arrived. Planet has aired in Australia, so you never know when the Gallifreyan
Time Love Brigade will strike.

A Podcast Of Impossible Things
Cardiff-based Doctor Who fans get together to discuss the latest Doctor Who and
do a full length commentary on new Doctor Who episodes.
Current episode:
Planet Of The Dead - the commentary.

Bigger On The Inside
Mike and Dan decide to do their own podcast exploring each Doctor Who story in
broadcast order. It is a very different style from Jonathan's. Again - can they
pull it off? Part of the Earth-2 family of podcasts. Warning - explicit language
(swearing). If your headphones leak any sound at all - do not listen at work.
Current episode - 15 - The Celestial Toymaker and The Gunfighters. Our hosts
reach the two stories where Dodo was actually given plotlines. Good for Dodo.
Was it good for the stories?

The Whovian Quest website is offline, and no new episodes have arrived in
months. I have enjoyed the show, and really wanted to hear it get through the
series. Does anybody know if Jonathan is continuing?

Irregular and irreverant podcast looking at the world of Doctor Who with a

Torchwood This Week
June 19/20, 2009 - Volume 3, Number 25
The weekly guide to Torchwood transmissions.
by Benjamin F. Elliott

Well, we're a day early, so apologies if there are further developments before
the regular publication time.

We have a premiere week for Torchwood Series 3 - Children Of Earth. The episodes
will air the week of 4 July to 10 July. They will air over 5 consecutive days,
so for scheduling purposes the expectation is that the episodes will air either
5 July to 9 July or 6 July to 10 July. No official broadcast time yet, though
9PM BST is the assumption. BBC HD would simulcast programming like this.

Before this series airs, there are 3 new Torchwood radio plays on BBC Radio 4.
1, 2, and 3 July at 2:15PM BST each day. They can be heard around the world and
will stay online for a week after broadcast.

We do not have an Australian or Canadian airdate yet. SPACE (Canada) had
schedules up through the 19th of July, with no sign of Torchwood Series 3. SPACE
does start providing episodes online (for people in Canada) starting this
Tuesday with Everything Changes.

The UK start date is approximately 2 weeks before BBC America's start date of 20
July, dashing hopes of a simultaneous broadcast. BBC America is doing more and
more advertising for Children Of Earth. All 26 episodes of Torchwood Series 1
and 2 will air on 18 and 19 July. The Children Of Earth 5 parter will repeat on
Sunday 26 July as a marathon. We do not know yet if BBC America will air the
full episodes in extended slots or edit them to the standard broadcast time. Due
to BBC America's broadcasting standards, nudity, some sex, and some (but not
all) profanities will be cut even in a full length broadcast. The uncut DVDs and
Blu-Rays of this series hit US store shelves on Tuesday 28 July, 1 day after the
UK DVD and Blu-Ray releases. At the current time we do not know which companies
will offer BBC America HD for their premiere week (including Torchwood).

Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who .

BBC Radio 4
can be heard live online worldwide with shows available for another 7 days

1 July 2:15PM BST/3:15PM CET "Asylum" (premiere)
2 July 2:15PM BST/3:15PM CET "Golden Age" (premiere)
3 July 2:15PM BST/3:15PM CET "The Dead Line" (premiere)
3 Brand new Torchwood Plays in the Afternoon Play slot starring the regular cast
and set before the Children Of Earth episodes. All episodes 45 minutes long.

World premiere broadcaster of Series 3 (Children Of Earth)! 5 episodes in a 5
night strip.
At press time, BBC One was scheduled to air Torchwood during the week of 4 to 10
July. 5 nights in a row, presumably at 9PM BST. It remained to be seen if the
episodes would air from Sunday 5 July to Thursday 9 July or Monday 6 July to
Friday 10 July.

Expected to simulcast the new Torchwood episodes with BBC One. Unknown if they
will repeat the episodes later.

BBC Three
BBC Three is the likely home for repeats of the new 5 episodes. As the final
schedule is not firmed up yet, we do not know if BBC Three will be involved.

While it is too far out to see BFBS' schedule for the week of 4 to 10 July at
press time, they usually air mainline BBC One shows the day of or the day after
first broadcast for the benefit of military outside the UK. Torchwood would
likely air on BFBS One, BFBS Two, or both, along with BFBS Navy and BFBS One Day
Later. We should have a much clearer view next week.
