Richard E. Grant has been cast in the upcoming 2012 Doctor Who Christmas special. The news came from a tweet from Doctor Who Magazine today. It's interesting to see an official-unofficial past Doctor actor return to the series. You may recall that Richard E. Grant was the original 9th Doctor in the Scream of the Shalka, a story written by Paul Cornell. This animated adventure was produced prior to the television series being relaunched in 2005. We reviewed Scream of the Shalka not too long ago in Doctor Who: Podshock 267. In it, we discussed Richard E. Grant's portrayal of the Doctor and how Scream was the forerunner of Rose

Word is that he will be playing a villain in the special. This isn't the first time he is appearing in a "live action" story (as opposed to animation) connected with Doctor Who. He also played the part of a '10th Doctor' in the comical sketch for Comic Relief penned by Steven Moffat called Curse of the Fatal Death (see video below). This comedy romp also predates the return of the series to television.

Grant is probably most known by the general public for the Withnail and I (top left photo) which also stars another past Doctor actor, Paul McGann (the 8th Doctor).

Along with Grant, we also know that it is this story which will serve as an introduction to the 11th's Doctor new companion played by Jenna-Louise Coleman.

The BBC's "Doctor Who" website has confirmed the story with the article at this link:

The story from the website also mentions that Tom Ward will also be in the Christmas special as well. However I'm not really familiar with his work  but here is a link to wikipedia for his bio and filmography:

Richard E. Grant is known for his voice work on "Scream of the Shalka" but he may be better well-known for his role in the Francis Ford Copola version of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" where hr played the part of Dr. Seward and more recently the movie "The Iron Lady". For a more detailed look at his io and filmography you can go to the wikipedia link here:

Thanks for the BBC confirmation and the information about Tom Ward also being cast in the special. Like yourself, I am not familiar with his work. I don't think I had seen him in anything as of yet, unless I saw that the H.G. Wells thing he did, I don't recall if I saw it or not.
