If the website you are reading this column on is http://www.gallifreyone.com/thisweek.php , be advised that the conversion of Outpost Gallifrey to a website solely for the Gallifrey convention in California is continuing. The easiest way to continue following This Week In Doctor Who is to use one of the links at the top of the column (the Yahoo Group, the RSS feed for the Yahoo Group, the Gallifreyan Embassy web mirror). The rec.arts.drwho and rec.arts.drwho.moderated newsgroups will also still have the column, along with various places that pick up the RSS feed around the internet. The Doctor Who News Page http://www.doctorwhonews.com is migrating and regenerating - This Week will still be there in some form, either as a link to the RSS feed or something else. But if you use the gallifreyone.com link, you need to be ready to change - soon. I will continue to supply the column there till the change. But the change could occur at any time.

This Week In Doctor Who has been proud to be associated with Outpost Gallifrey in one form or another since July 1998 when this column began. Thanks for all the glorious years.

With various technical issues, a special on Radio 4 escaped attention. Not enough time to put it in the body of the column, but BBC Radio 4 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 had a documentary on the TARGET novelizations. For decades, nearly every Doctor Who TV story was turned into a book. Often the books were easier to find than the TV stories. This is the story of those books, one of the most successful publishing lines around, yet for some reason not allowed to be reprinted. Available on Radio 4's listen again service until sometime Tuesday 30 June.

For press releases on Doctor Who, keep an eye on the BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media http://www.c21media.net .

Listings for North and South America are in This Week In Doctor Who Western Hemisphere. Sarah Jane Adventures, K9 and Podcasts are in This Week In Doctor Who Spinoffs. Torchwood info is in Torchwood This Week.

This Week In Doctor Who Western Hemisphere
June 27, 2009 - Vol 1, No 26
The Guide to North and South American Doctor Who TV Listings
by Benjamin F. Elliott

CANADA/USA - SPACE's next Doctor Who broadcast is Planet Of The Dead on Saturday 25 July at 9PM Eastern (two repeats on 26 July). BBC America's premiere of new to US Who is The Next Doctor - today Saturday 27 June (9PM, Midnight, 3AM Eastern - 75 minute time slot). Hopefully lots of us with BBC America will tune in tonight to one of the 3 showings. I'd love to see Doctor Who do better on BBC America in the ratings than it did on SciFi. BBC America is giving an extended time slot - a good return on the investment makes the point that they should do this for more (ideally ALL) of their shows that need extra time to air complete.

Note - BBC America has not updated their On Demand information in weeks, so we do not know if The Next Doctor will be available to digital cable subscribers with BBC America On Demand. It gets a DVD release in September. SPACE is now putting Torchwood episodes online (Canada only) for a week and did have The Next Doctor up in March, so presumably SPACE will have Planet Of The Dead online in late July as well.

CANADA - Ztele http://www.ztele.com will air Journey's End in a 60 minute time slot starting Tuesday 7 July. Since the episode was a bit over 63 minutes long, this will mean significant editing. Ztele aired Voyage Of The Damned (72 minute episode) in a 90 minute slot, so it is possible that they were unaware that a complete version of Journey's End was available. Somebody get ahold of BBC Worldwide Canada so they can alert Ztele to this fact and find out if Ztele wants to swap out for the better one. Ztele is a French language station.

CANADA - CBC TV is not through with Doctor Who just yet. CBC repeats Series 4 (the 2008 episodes) late Sunday evenings. The official start time seems to be 11PM or Midnight depending on the week (11:30PM or 12:30AM Newfoundland). Some Pacific Time Zone stations are starting Doctor Who 1/2 hour later, and it does not seem to be consistent.

USA - KTEH http://www.kteh.org is taking votes now on their Doctor Who Youtube contest. See KTEH's Doctor Who blog (link at KTEH's schedule entry) for contest details. The winner of the six contenders gets to host a Doctor Who marathon. Doctor Who returns on Sunday 28 June at 11PM (new day - the Friday slot goes to a different show) with Doomsday.

USA - Doctor Who - Series 3 (The Runaway Bride and the 13 episode 2007 series with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) are now distributed to Public TV stations by BBC Worldwide Americas, not American Public TV. Series 4 also seems to be available to buy - start date for Series 4 on Public TV stations is unknown. BBC Worldwide Americas also distributes classic Doctor Who to stations.

The public TV stations known to have bought The Runaway Bride and Series 3:
WXXI 21 Rochester, NY
WTTW 11 Chicago, IL (expected July/August 2009)
WGVU/WGVK 35,52 Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo, MI
WILL 12 Urbana, IL
WTVP 47 Peoria, IL (currently in first run)
Iowa Public TV
Idaho Public TV
Wisconsin Public TV
Milwaukee Public TV
KUED 7 Salt Lake City, UT (currently in first run)
OETA Oklahoma
KLRU 18 Austin, TX (currently in first run)
Alaska Public TV
WSKG/WSKA 46,30 Binghamton/Elmira, NY (currently in first run)

Now, I am confident that there are more stations with rights to Series 3 than that. But these are the stations who have contacted me. Somehow I doubt that BBC Worldwide Americas is going to send out a note with the stations who bought in like American Public TV did, leaving us in the dark till a station comes forward or it appears in their schedules.

Series 2 is currently available to public TV stations in an American Public TV package until March 31, 2010. For the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have bought the rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required to do so. American Public TV is no longer offering Series 1 - I do not know if BBC Worldwide Americas will offer those stations to public TV stations now or not.

2 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run (1963-1989), but not New Who. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA is airing Peter Davison episodes. WHRO 15 Norfolk, VA is airing Tom Baker episodes.

Radio Free Skaro http://www.radiofreeskaro.com
The 3 Canadians (Warren, Steven, Chris) get together on the weekends for about an hour or more to discuss the latest in Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sarah Jane in a fairly amusing manner. When one is away, the 4th Canadian (Katrina) will play.
Current episode:
#146 - "Better Aim Than Graham" - News about the upcoming Torchwood episodes gives the team a sense of hope about that Doctor Who spinoff not heard since 2006. They actually discuss Torchwood for a while. Appropriately, this happens on the episode where they review "The Empty Child", the 2005 Doctor Who episode that introduced John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, who goes on to be the lead on Torchwood. And to reiterate their warning to SPACE, the print of The Empty Child shown on CBC, SciFi, BBC America, and PBS stations is full length - however, a vital scene is missing its dialogue. The scene is there, but without the dialogue nothing actually happens, and the dialogue is needed for the ending to make sense in The Doctor Dances. SPACE is in an excellent place to insist that the print get replaced by a correct one like the one on the DVDs.
Coming Soon:

And on Sunday July 26:
Commentary on "Planet Of The Dead", scheduled by coincidence just a few hours after SPACE's premiere of the episode in Canada and just a few hours before BBC America's premiere of the episode in the USA.

West, Dave AC, Colin, and other Doctor Who fans liked the live Doctor Who: Podshocks so much that they wanted to keep talking afterwards. The resulting show covers Doctor Who, anything else sci-fi related, and can go wildly off in all directions. Chats open 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.

Two Minute Time Lord http://twominutetimelord.com
A bite-sized commentary and revew show. Host Chip's interest was rekindled by the 2005 revival. He believes in balancing old fandom and new viewers, respect for the past and breaking the rules. He tries to keep his pontifications to 120 seconds, because we're ALL in a hurry these days.
Current Episode:
#32 - Everything's So Political. Chip discusses politics and Doctor Who. Personally, I'd imagine the Doctor would be more interested in UK politics than US politics - he spends so much more time in the UK than over here.
Coming Soon:
#33 - Some kind of regular episode. An episode due to go out yesterday did not get made, in case it gets mentioned in this one.

Staggering Stories http://www.staggeringstories.net
A wild, wandering podcast with Doctor Who and the other flavours of the moment winding together roughly once every 2 weeks. The website's main focus is on stories collected through the years. They like Daleks and Pertwee's head, don't they? (Disclaimer - they are about to publish a second Mr. Dalek story that I wrote for them.)
Current:
Episode 48 - "Our Segments Overrunneth" - Without Jean - Andy, Adam, Keith, and Fake Keith find that the show runs rather long, and the typically very long feedback section near the end of the show got shortened to less than a minute of headlines. They watched "The Invasion", the famous Patrick Troughton story that now has 2 animated episodes that ought to be shown on TV - come on, broadcasters! Speaking of animated, David Tennant's got another one coming. Ads for other shows, Primeval's autopsy, the Dalek invasion of a flower shop, actors guest starring on shows, and other stuff.
Expected to record soon - Episode 49. "The Staggering Stories Code" - somebody has gone back in time and inserted 3 extra Staggering Stories cast members in the pilot episode from 2007, back before they joined the show. Can the Vatican Council of Staggering Stories keep this knowledge secret - probably not, you're already reading this entry. Unless they're after you too ...

The Flashing Blade Podcast http://www.flashingblade.org.uk
Tony Gallichan returns to podcast land with new podcaster Jo! to look at Doctor Who and matters of interest. Tony grew up with UK fandom and knows all the cliches. Jo! - didn't. Flashing Blade wants to be known as the podcast that would like a nice cup of tea. But what kind of tea? Earl Grey? Mandarin Orange? Herbal? Raspberry? Possible some nice ice tea? The tabloids circle for the answer - well, we wish they did, as it would make more interesting tabloids.
Current episode - 3. Jo! and the Tony look at Big Finish's audio "The Beast Of Orlok". Also, the Peter Davison story "Earthshock". The cult of THE COLIN BAKER got irritated with Jo!, leading Tony to drastic measures. They even put up a link to their Facebook page - but Facebook doesn't like to let non-members see the pages, so meh there.

The Minute Doctor Who Podcast http://web.mac.com/backintheussr6/The_Minute_Doctor_Who_Podcast/Podcast/Podcast.html

First up - Tony Gallichan. Coming in late July (Luke's on vacation till then) - more of these installments. Try to guess which people were crazy enough to volunteer.

The chat must have gotten active - the show runs 3 hours, 1 minute, and 38 seconds. I wonder which DVD caused more debate - my money's on Battlefield.

Irregular and irreverant podcast looking at the world of Doctor Who with a funhouse mirror and coming out the other side holding a plush toy that wasn't really the one you wanted but you'll keep it anyway because you can give it to your girlfriend to impress her. It's that kind of show.
Current segment - a short appeal by "Rula Lenska".

Current Doctor Who episode - The Curse Of Fenric - DVD Extended Version.

Torchwood: Children Of Earth - it is coming!
UK Premiere - Monday 6 July 9PM BST on BBC One and BBC HD
Australia premiere - Tuesday 7 July 8:30PM Australian Eastern on UKTV Australia
USA Premiere - Monday 20 July 9PM EDT on BBC America
Canada Premiere - Monday 20 July 10PM EDT on SPACE

Torchwood Series 3 (Children Of Earth) has its world premiere Monday to Friday 6 July through 10 July at 9PM BST on BBC One and BBC HD. Great to have a date at last. UK audiences who miss the 9PM showing can catch late night repeats on BBC Three or BBC HD - time varies a few minutes each night, but around the Midnight hour. If you miss on TV, then you have iPlayer for a few days or the DVDs and Blu-Rays late in the month. No evidence of TV repeats after 10 July.

While the concept of a worldwide premiere fell apart, UKTV in Australia will be airing the Torchwood episodes just hours after the premieres in the UK. Tuesday through Saturday 7 through 11 July at 8:30PM Australian Eastern Time, with repeats at 1:30AM that night and 11:30AM the next morning. UKTV then repeats the episodes over the following 5 weeks if you miss the premiere. BBC HD Australia was previously reported to be simulcasting the Torchwood episodes with UKTV - I cannot find evidence of those broadcasts yet.  Crossing fingers - we will see what BBC HD Australia does. They are currently repeating Series 1 multiple times per week.

BBC America in the USA and SPACE in Canada will air Children Of Earth on the same 5 days - Monday 20 July to Friday 24 July, two weeks after the UK and Australia airings. There are still holes in listings, but here is the current status.

SPACE goes first cause this is easier:
First showing - 10PM Eastern all 5 days (75 minutes including commercials)
Second showing - 2:15AM Eastern all 5 days (75 minutes including commercials)

BBC America:
Inside The Hub special - Monday 20 July at 8PM Eastern
Full length versions of episodes - weeknights at 9PM and Midnight Eastern (75 minutes including commercials)
Edited versions of episodes - weeknights at 8PM and 11PM Eastern (60 minutes including commercials the next weekday)
Marathon repeat - Sunday 26 July at 1PM Eastern (not known which version of episodes will air)

Before this series airs, there are 3 new Torchwood radio plays on BBC Radio 4. 1, 2, and 3 July at 2:15PM BST each day. They can be heard around the world and will stay online for a week after broadcast.

Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho .
