TEASER

Sparks tells Nelson and Crane about the cargo plane which has a Cesium 7 bomb on board which they will pick up and deliver to an underwater installation (Deep Center?). Sharkey sees the civilian bomb expert aboard Seaview is an old friend of his--Doctor Bradley who used to be a four eyed squinty kid. He and Sharkey grew up together on the Lower East side; he calls Sharkey Ethel. Sharkey tried to stop him from calling him Ethel--his middle name, he tells Nelson and Crane is Ethelbert; Nelson comments on his full name. Despite pickett ships all around, an unidentified sub arrives. Seaview is 2000 yards away from it. A ship to air missile destroys the cargo plane. Crane orders an all dive.

 

ACT ONE

The bomb doesn't detonate. It is 6 miles North by Northwest. Seaview goes up bubble five degrees and levels off at 90 feet. The electrolytic action of the sea water will set off the bomb's firing mechanism. At the nose, Bradley, who is the Allied Command's bomb expert and Nelson look out. They have three and one half hours to find the bomb. Crane remarks the bomb was supposed to be a deterrent to war if they can get it to their underwater defense complex. The bomb at 800 feet can be reached with anti compression oxygen which is built into the Seaview diving suits now. Seaview lowers to 700 feet over the bomb which they see is already activated. Nelson tells Sharkey to go out with Bradley who exclaims, "Ethel..I can't think of a better man."  On the TV monitor they see the enemy sub--called the Vulcan which is not in the International Registry. Seaview moves away from Vulcan which fires torpedoes at it. Seaview suddenly via stock footage--has 8 windows again as more and more torpedoes are fired at it. Blasts shake Seaview. The Vulcan follows it down. Another blast blows fire onto the Seaview's own missile-torpedo firing board!

 

ACT TWO

Sharkey tells Control they cannot fire back--the hydrophone is out and is sonar shorted out. Bradley asks, "It doesn't look good, does it?"  Nelson says, "Ahh, we've been in worse fixes."  The two enemy commanders--Commander Athos Vadim and his second Captain Zane--plot. Zane wants to board Seaview and take it home. Vadim  wants the bomb--that is their mission first, then he claims they can return for Seaview and take it back to their home country as their prize. Nelson orders Crane and Ski take the Flying Sub and distract but not tangle with the Vulcan. The Flying Sub has no heavy weapons. Vadim seems to know what the Flying Submarine is as it leaves Seaview--if they can get that--it is ideal for landing alongside the bomb--they must be using it to do just that. The hydrophone operative tells them they are 3 miles Northeast from the bomb. Crane explains to Ski about their orders--distract Vulcan at all costs--even if it blows them out of the water as Ski said. Sharkey recalls when Bradley and he dove in the East River for bottles to get money. Bradley explains the bomb is almost human in its sensitivity. Vadim realizes the Flying Sub is a trick--their agent on Seaview signaled them that Seaview is at the bomb. Vadim orders lasers prepared to fire at the Flying Sub. Sharkey and Bradley are at the bomb and try to start deactivation--if it goes one half the world might be blown up. Vadim closes in on the Flying Sub and a laser from Vulcan hits its wing. The Flying Sub sparks and Ski and Crane go unconscious as it hits the bottom. As they work on it, the bomb falls on Bradley! He tells Sharkey it has now gone wild and will explode.

 

ACT THREE

Bradley tells Sharkey to move the control setting counter clock wise--it is now partially deactivated. Nelson tells Crane to go to the Missile Room to lay out hoist gear. Nelson talks to Sparks but we don't see him this time. The hoist gear gets the bomb off Bradley. Crane and Ski awaken and put out fires in the Flying Sub. Vulcan lands on top Flying Sub and the two hear it and think it is a diving bell from Seaview--guns greet them when they open the hatch. Zane makes them go up. The bomb is in Seaview's missile room with one control behind the plate needed to be deactivated and another on the casing. Sharkey and Bradley come back inside--Nelson orders Bradley to SickBay but he wants to work on the bomb. Vadim wants Crane's help in getting Nelson to cooperate and to make him realize it is useless to resist; he also mentions what country he comes from does not matter. He would rather the bomb blow up than have it fall in US hands. Crane and Ski fight guards en route to the brig but are overpowered. Chip calls the Missile Room as Bradley turns the wrench on one control. Nelson tells Sharkey to tell Chip that he can't answer him right now. Chip insists to talk to Nelson in the Control Room. Vulcan is heading at Seaview at flank speed. They use anti sonar and anti hydrophone devices but Vulcan keeps following Seaview. It is coming at them on a homing beam which is coming from Seaview's aft section, Nelson isn't sure when the bomb may go off or how long they have. Sparks tells Nelson it will take one hour to jam the beacon. Sparks contacts Vadim but Vadim won't answer right away. "I think I should talk to the good Admiral, huh?"  He answers and Nelson tells him about the bomb--that'll explode. They need 15 minutes to disarm it. Vadim tells Nelson he has 15 minutes but then, he and his men will board Seaview. Vadim tells his crew to fire laser at Seaview at 500 yards and it hits Seaview, shaking it. Seaview hits bottom.

 

ACT FOUR

The bomb falls over on its side. Sharkey finds wiring in the tool Bradley is using--it opened up to an interior. Bradley calls it a neutralizer to keep the tool grounded from setting off the bomb's electronic impulse. Bradley makes the ticking slow down. Seaview's hull and circuitry are okay but the reactor and hull have some damage. Nelson and Chip order all to battle stations and be ready to repel boarders. They have 22 minutes of air. Sparks tells the two the homing beacon is coming from the Missile Room. Vadim stops his sub to neutral buoyancy, "I have a feeling our assignment is coming to an end."  Nelson tells Sharkey to search for a homing device. In the Vulcan brig, Ski says the entire room is solid steel. They remove a bed post and Crane uses it to blow a pipe in the room. Steam comes out. Nelson is working and stops the second bomb circuit--one more to go. He finds the homing device in the tool of Bradley and tells Sharkey to belay the search. He explains to Sharkey, who pulls the doctor up and punches him. He can't believe it. Nelson asks for him to help. A guard on the Vulcan opens the brig, Ski hits him, and Crane gets his gun. They leave, lock the brig door, and in a steel hallway, trip and knock out an enemy crewman. Seaview men hold Bradley as the bomb sparks. Bradley panics but Sharkey slaps him. Crane and Ski find a room which is an armory. A guard comes in, looking for gear for the boarding party and fights Ski and Crane, yelling for help. Another man comes in and they fight. One throws a box on Crane and hits him; Ski pulls him off Crane. Another grabs a grenade and yells, "Bandore, got a grenade, make for the door!"  Crane fights this one with the grenade in between their hands. They roll, Ski punches the man out but he pulled the pin. Ski finds it and they replace it; Crane tosses it into the hall but it doesn't go off. They get gas masks and gas grenades. Vadim calls Seaview--they will begin boarding. Nelson calls back while Sharkey holds the mike. He reveals they have Bradley. Vadim uses Crane and Ski as hostages, telling Nelson they have the pair. Seaview's torpedoes can now be launched manually Chip reports. Nelson orders Chip to get a fix and prepare for firing, "I know Lee and Kowalski are aboard!"  He yells at a wide eyed Chip and Sharkey. Sharkey wonders if there is some other way. Nelson yells, "There's no way!"  Ron, Phil, and Ray go with Chip to fire. Vadim prepares to blow the hatches. Crane and Ski throw gas grenades into Vulcan's control room. Kane wounds Ski's shoulder so Crane shoots and kills him as gas overcomes him and the others. Vadim sinks to the floor. The two Seaviewers look for scuba gear. Chip tells Nelson the Vulcan is 300 yards away and the concussion will hit Seaview, Chip obviously stalling. Nelson yells that he doesn't care--to fire! The resulting blast rolls Seaview and the bomb falls and rolls at Dr. Bradley. A crewman gets out of its way but the bomb pins Bradley and crushes him against the wall. It also smokes up seemingly ready to explode!

 

TAG

Crane helps Ski in the water, the pair in diving dear and heading for Seaview. Nelson stops the bomb from going off. Sharkey tells him Bradley is dead. Lee calls, requesting permission to come aboard. Nelson smiles, "Permission granted...with pleasure." 

 

REVIEW: Some stock footage (Seaview hitting bottom, Flying Sub hitting bottom, enemy sub firing), some similar themes (the bomb), stock sets and subs--however, this one is truly likeable despite the violence. Bradley was likeable also...and it was fairly obvious he was the spy...which made me wonder if it was so obvious maybe he wasn't. The music is very good; Alexander Courage doing his best work for Irwin Allen in VOYAGE each time--even better than his stuff for STAR TREK. The guest cast was very good here, menacing and just right. Nelson's quickness at wanting to blow up the Vulcan is a good move---it obviously weighed on him to kill Lee and Kowalski but he, unlike Sharkey and Chip, didn't hesitate when the lives of half the world are in the balance. That he yelled and snapped at them was quite nice and in character. I think since this one came around the time of THE PLANT MAN, THE HAUNTED SUBMARINE, and the like, it was highly enjoyable for just being an adventure. BRAND OF THE BEAST

TEASER

A surface storm shakes a surface ship called the Columbine which is 3 hours away from Seaview, the reactor of which is strained. Nelson risks Seaview to go to the aid of the ship since the world's greatest scientific minds are on it, conducting top secret research. As Seaview moves at flank, the reactor is going into the danger zone. Sharkey and Lee monitor it; in the hallway, Ski hears it going critical, running wild. He reports it so Crane slows Seaview and orders him to clear out of the area but a severe blast comes from the room and knocks Ski down, and of course, shakes Seaview back and forth.

 

ACT ONE

The men put fires out in the control room. Sharkey finds Ski on the floor and orders him to report to Doc. Ski protests, "I don't need any Doc."  Sharkey answers, "You will if you don't get to sickbay."  They must fix a valve on the reactor but must shut it down first--Seaview is stopped. Lee won't let Nelson go into the Reactor Room but Nelson knows it blindfolded and gets into a protective suit. Sharkey gets the men out; Nelson has to put his hand into the pile (gee, don't they have protective gloves?) and shuts it down. He orders the tool he used decontaminated--he tells Lee he took some radiation on his right hand but orders Seaview at flank--the Columbine is shipping water and can only stay afloat another 3 hours. Seaview is 2 hours away now. Crane worries as Nelson, in his cabin, complains or tiredness. Crane tells him to rest and leaves. Nelson looks at his hand near his bunk--it is hairy and somewhat clawed! He rolls his eyes, knowing what this sign. He calls Sharkey and asks him to come to his cabin and lock him in. He makes Sharkey give his word to tell no one. Sharkey gives it and Nelson yells at him to move out of the room. Nelson pulls up a chair and recalls events of WEREWOLF in a nice montage of scenes--the virus, Doc's diagnosis, and as the flashback ends, Nelson is the werewolf!

 

ACT TWO

The wolfman tears apart the cabin. Sharkey goes to the Control Room and hears Crane order Ski to take a message to Nelson. Sharkey tries to stop him but has to run up the ladder after him. Ski gives him some trouble in giving him the message to give the Admiral. Sharkey goes to the Admiral's door and hears growls. Crane asks Ski about what is keeping the Admiral and is told about Sharkey intercepting the message. Lee confronts Sharkey about it and Sharkey tries to avoid telling him much. Crane relieves Sharkey and tells him he is confined to his quarters; then calls Nelson. Sharkey hears this in the hallway as Nelson answers. Crane goes up toward Nelson's cabin, Sharkey beats him to the door first to stop him from finding the messed room. When Lee sees Sharkey, he becomes mad that the Chief disobeyed his direct order. He tells Nelson, after the Admiral dismisses Sharkey, that, "No one will countermand my orders!"  Nelson doesn't make much of it but Lee can't forget it, "Forget outright insubordination. I am in command here."  Nelson asks him to please forget it. He takes Crane down to the Control Room. Lee wants to begin rescue procedures using the Flying Sub. When Doc looks at Nelson, he doesn't find a thing but Nelson questions his memory about the rabies like virus they encountered. Doc: "Remember it? I've been trying to forget it.  Convince myself it never happened."  He questions Nelson about any reoccurrence of the attack--the vaccine may be of no further use and another attack could be fatal. In his cabin again, Nelson sees his hairy hand and says, "No!" He runs out like a madman, runs down to the Control Room via the nose ladder, pushes Ski down, and races into the Flying Sub. He falls to his knees and is the werewolf again. Ski calls Crane to the Flying Sub hatch. The wolfman wrecks the Flying Sub; Crane goes to move down the hatch to find out if Nelson is okay but Ski pulls him back, "No, Skipper, don't!"  Crane yells, "Let go of me!"  Blasts come up from the hole and knock the two down! Seaview shakes (ho hum).

 

ACT THREE

Feet walk up from the Flying Sub hatch and go up the ladder in the nose. Crane jumps up and grabs the foot and leg of the man moving up the ladder in a scary scene--the werewolf snarls down at him from higher up! It runs off, kicking Crane down first. Ski and Sharkey pick him up. He orders armed search parties using stun guns. Doc and Crane talk, Crane asking hypothetical questions--the Doctor feels Nelson may have the viral infection again based on Nelson's earlier questions. Flying Sub's beams and ribs are damaged and will take awhile to fix. Doc, shocked, realizes Nelson is in trouble now and tells Crane he is sorry. Doc tells Lee that any man with a break in the skin from the werewolf attack--will get the infection also with the same fatal results it will have on the Admiral. Crane comes down a hall and Sharkey almost stuns him. Crane doesn't want to think it is hopeless. Two men search Nelson's cabin. Crane goes into a very dark missile room--dark and empty. He sees a shadow come in from behind the missile firing area in the back. It is Chip in a cameo--a strange cameo which may have been filmed aside from the rest of the show--perhaps Bob was on vacation. He just heard about the Admiral and asks what he can do to help. Crane wants to keep it from the Control Room duty watch (night duty?). Chip says, "I understand. Good luck."  Chip leaves. Ski sees the shadow of the werewolf on the hallway wall and sees it come at him. He calls Sharkey but it knocks Sharkey down. They hit it with stun guns with no effect. Sharkey didn't get a break in the skin. Crane asks if he is hurt. Sharkey says, "No sir, I always feel this way after I've been run over by a truck."  Crane figures he can't ask the men to defend themselves with weapons that won't work against the creature. Live ammo is needed now. Sharkey takes a room near the Circuitry Room and sends Ski to the Circuitry Room...where the werewolf is. It hides and then stalks him. Ski gets out and pulls the door handle shut but the claw comes out of the break. Sharkey hits it and they lock the room. Sharkey tells Lee. The monster makes Seaview shake wildly, now slanting one way--and going down to the bottom. It hits a rock which scraps the bottom of the sub, then the sub hits bottom--again.

 

ACT FOUR

We hear some brief LOST IN SPACE music. 37 to 54 are flooded. They can unflood the sections and repair the Circuitry Room. Crane calls Sharkey and Ski for them to go into the Circuitry Room and use guns. Ski says, "That's the Admiral in there--we can't just kill him!"  Sharkey tells him to follow orders and yells at him some more. They break in and see Nelson on the floor--his face hidden behind consoles, face down. Ski covers Sharkey as the Chief checks Nelson..moving closer, seeing he is still breathing. It is Nelson again and he wakes up later to the face of Crane, "Doc says you should get as much rest as possible. You're going to be all right."  Crane tells him he should have told him right away about the virus relapse and then says, "We'll lick this!"  Nelson wants himself locked in his cabin. Crane agrees. Sharkey comes with the message that the Columbine has its pumps working now, the gale storm is letting up. They can stay afloat a few more hours. Seaview lifts off the bottom almost tail first this time, nose dipped a bit. They go above 200 feet, then 150 feet; ahead standard. Nelson looks at the vent in his room and climbs out. Ski asks Sharkey about the Admiral. Sharkey takes over from crewman Brynside (or some such name) at the bell controls (what are they doing there at this time anyway?). Nelson comes in and orders Sharkey to launch the bell with him in it. Sparks calls Crane--the carrier Argon can get to the Columbine and send copters to get the men off it. Crane runs up the ladder when Nelson doesn't answer his call from the control room. Nelson tells them from the bell, "Send me all the way to the bottom."  Crane runs to the Missile Room and order the bell up. Nelson hits a switch, realizing they are doing this and the bell is released from Seaview (why would they have such a device?). The wire from the bell flops up around the turning winch.

 

TAG

The bell hits bottom. Nelson calls, explaining he couldn't take the risk of infecting someone else. Nelson laughs as Crane tells him they could have retrieved him if he didn't cut the wire--Nelson tells him that's why he did it that way. Crane automatically activates the ballast release in the bell. It sails back up to Seaview (?). Lee orders the men to depressurize the bell before they take Nelson out. The port windows are fogged up--inside it could be Nelson or the werewolf Nelson. Crane orders the men to fire until it is dead if it is the wolfman. He opens it and Nelson comes out. The Doc gives him a clean bill of health...he, Lee, and Nelson look at a slide on the screen of the cleared blood from Nelson. Nelson figures (over Doc) the change of pressure put nitrogen in his blood--thus a new vaccine can be made from that. Doc is relieved to hear that. Crane says, "Believe me, Doc, that goes double for the whole crew."

 

REVIEW: This story, with wide holes in it, is better than WEREWOLF. Again, as in WEREWOLF, there are some genuinely effective and scary sequences...having a supernatural terror on board an ultra modern sub is quite a good mix. The ladder scene, the scene in the missile room where Lee sees Chip's shadow, the hallway scene where Ski sees the shadow of the wolf on the wall, and many others were quite effective. One problem is why Nelson kept it from Lee for so long and told Sharkey. This made some nice tension between Crane and Sharkey (which was never fully resolved--I imagine Crane realized Sharkey was "insubordinate"  just to cover for Nelson) and showed Sharkey's loyalty to Nelson. The diving bell sequence is a bit odd--why a release valve? In case it gets stuck on something and has to be jettisoned? How did Crane blow the ballast in the bell and get Nelson aboard without Nelson dying from the bends? I suppose the virus could have made Nelson act so different--and he really does act very unscientific or logical--and perhaps the virus protected Nelson's body from being killed by the bends on the way up. A rather uneven episode, one that is not very good but not very bad either. By now, I've grown sick and tired of seeing Seaview hit bottom using the same stock shot that is in every third season episode that calls for Seaview to hit bottom. The effects are nice and I suppose back when this was made, the lack of VCRs made it seem as if it was a different shot each time---but honestly, it's not!!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

THE CREATURE II-or THE THIRD SEASON THE CREATURE (not to be        confused with the first season's THE CREATURE or...)

TEASER

Seaview: Lee and Ski go in the diving tube looking for a life form--a mass of tentacles and seaweed like stuff which makes a strange sound. It raises an electrical field which Chip warns the two divers about. Electrical bolts from the monster hit Crane. Ski goes to help him but the monster covers Crane--who is like a tiny toy to it--in fact, that is what it looks like but it is still an effective shot. The thing engulfs Lee, rising over him and lowering its massive tentacles.

 

ACT ONE

Seaview is calm during the titles. Chip sounds an electrical red alert. Lee calls--he can't breath. Ski calls, "There a...thing...out here, it swallowed the Skipper."  Chip tells him to hug the bottom and Seaview moves at flank speed to the rescue. The voltage outside is going up. Electric bolts from the thing hit and shake Seaview. It hits the rock and hits bottom, the back of the fins breaking off a piece of the rock (stock) mountain. The transformer is burnt out and there is some hull damage. Hitting bottom isn't so dangerous any more. Nelson and Dr. Horace (first name named only in promotional material) King are in the Flying Sub. Chip calls--"The thing has grown to gigantic size and apparently its engulfed Lee."  Flying Sub dives from sky to sea and see the giant amoeba like monster. King claims it is 1000 times bigger than the specimen in his lab (does this mean there is another or does he mean it figuratively--this was the specimen but no longer is?). Nelson says, "That's quite a thing you created and then released into the sea."  They see Crane on the floor of the ocean. King says, it is..."life created from the substance of the sea."  Ski gets Crane. Nelson uses the Flying Sub to get between the thing and the two divers. They get into the Flying Sub, Ski and King pulling Crane up last---meaning there must be some airlock--hatchway below the Flying Sub control room. Crane is not breathing as the Flying Sub moves out. Ski uses the resuscitator. Nelson calls Chip to have Doc (Richard Bull) stand by. The music is oddly grandiose as Flying Sub docks. In the nose, Doc works on Lee (and the music turns grim). He doesn't understand what is happening to Lee. They get Crane to Sickbay. Nelson wants radar and sonar checked as well as electric sensors and other detection devices. Sharkey is worried about Crane and will give blood or do anything he can to help. Luggage goes to guest cabin number one. Seaview lifts off the bottom--yet, the Flying Sub went up into Seaview--maybe rocks prevented Seaview from being totally nose down on the floor of the ocean. King is concerned about the creature--it may need attention. Nelson asks, "Is that your only concern?"  He calls Sickbay to find out how Lee is. "If he dies, I'm going to hold you directly responsible."   King insists their is always risk in taking the first steps to anything important--risk in the first space flights, the first submarines. Nelson counters with telling him that releasing it was a stupid risk. King argues it as the next logical step. Nelson argues that there were no scientific controls set up to do this and he will destroy it. Doc calls Nelson to Sickbay on the double and we hear grim music some more. Doc says, "I'm sorry."  King smiles and Crane breathes---all is normal now. Nelson wonders what is going on--Crane is still in a coma. Doc can't promise he won't die at any moment. Nelson wants King's notes about when life began in the creature, Nelson leaves. King tells Doc he has the knowledge about how the life force came into the creature. Crane's face looks like the creature---almost like the movies ALIEN and ALIENS with the face huggers--part of it fills over his head, really surreal, weird looking and even a bit silly mixed with scary. The actor who plays Dr. King makes it even more scary---he isn't menacing at all but when he talks about the monster, he suddenly turns from kind old man into a wide eyed obsessed maniac. The life force of the monster came from him--he accidentally touched it in his lab, "Now Captain Crane is a part of it, too."   Then King's form as the monster appears--it is a part of him, he a part of it! He turns back. Crane gets up and puts on a new shirt and says, "And now, you're going to a part of it, Doctor."  Doc moves back. Nice cliffhanger into commercial.

 

ACT TWO

Doc puts up a good fight--he throws a stool and tries to resist physically but is no match for Crane, who punches him, flipping him over the med table. When Doc gets up he is "...one of them."  Chip looks on the scanner--the monster has double in size again! Nelson is talking and Lee comes down, catching Nelson off guard. Chip and Nelson laugh at Lee's quick recovery. Nelson is wearing his dark Flying Sub pants. Lee doesn't want the creature destroyed (a sure sign the Captain is not the Captain! He always wants to blast new life forms!). Nelson, moved by this scientific approach, okays it: he will have Sharkey and King take samples from it and plant probes but only after first tranquilizing it. Then, he will destroy the main body. King and Sharkey are in wet suits in the Flying Sub. Nelson flies them undersea. An electric blast from the monster (which sounds like the screen activation from THE TIME TUNNEL--actually originally FANTASTIC VOYAGE movie sound effects) hits the Flying Sub but the tranquilizer missiles enter the beast thanks to Sharkey firing them. Flying Sub dips. Doc is on the nose ladder in Seaview. Lee orders Chip for him to turn the con over to him even though Chip knows the set up. Lee tells Doc he will need him soon but not yet. There is some good use of music here. King and Sharkey swim out at the creature (a large set--quite effective). Sharkey plants two probes with a spear. King takes a sample. The Flying Sub radio sparks. Sharkey and King return up the hatch. Electric shocks shake the Flying Sub. Nelson find the circuits gone and the creature moves at the helplessly drifting Flying Sub---which drifts into it!

 

ACT THREE

The Flying Sub is attacked by the thing. Nelson orders circuit breakers closed so the Flying Sub can blast out of it. The angles that we see the creature out of the Flying Sub window are very interesting. Nelson pours on the thrusters (which sound like the Jupiter II thrusters on LOST IN SPACE) and Flying Sub is totally free.  In the nose, with guns, Doc and three other men come down--the crash doors are closed. The Flying Sub comes up into Seaview. Nelson and Sharkey come up with King and find the men holding guns on them. King smiles as Crane says, "We belong to it."  King walks at Nelson and Sharkey. Chip opens the crash doors and with Ski comes in, Chip shooting one crewman down (and dead it would seem?). Lee tells them that their mission is to grow--to expand--to take--to be the whole world--all of life. This short speech is quite eerie and scary, worthy of HP Lovecraft's works. Spine chilling at this point. Nelson doesn't seem too warm to Lee, "Lee, I'm going  to destroy this thing and you too if necessary."  Chip, Sharkey, and Nelson lock the men in a cage room (?). This is some kind of new brig (not the one in THE HEAT MONSTER). Nelson warns Ski to keep away from them. Ski locks the door--the first door with himself on the inside of the room--but outside the mesh cage the others are locked in. Nelson wants Seaview secured. He and Sharkey go to the lab to examine the specimen while Ski gets jittery as Doc, King, Crane, and the other taken over men watch, staring at him. Chip tells Nelson the creature is moving at 19 knots and still growing. Nelson asks him to use the computer to check the size, destination, and electric generating power. Nelson tells Sharkey that the creature generates electric power and stores it much as an electric eel does--its power is like the electric eel to the millionth power. Sharkey raises his eyebrows, "Yeah, but how does it take over people?"  Nelson begins to repeat the question, "How does it takeover...ahhh...,"  then gets irritated, "How should I know!"  But Nelson does have an idea--human beings act on minute electrical impulses--perhaps the creature uses those to control the minds of those it spreads to. Chip calls: the destination: the Pacific coast and its size--that of a city when it gets there. Its electrical potential is off the paper. It can destroy a city six times the size of San Francisco. Nelson wants atomic torpedoes one and four readied. The men are exerting some form of mental influence over Ski and Del Monroe does a great acting job here, sweating and shaking so as not to open the door. The torpedo hits the creature--we see the large scale body but small model torpedoes--as if the small scale torpedoes do not match the giant size rig up of the monster. Ski moves to open the cage door. The hands of the men reach out to touch him. The torpedoes don't explode. Chip asks Nelson what they will do and Nelson responds with, "I dunno, Chip, I really don't know."  Kowalski has let the taken over men out.

 

ACT FOUR

The men who are part of the creature--including Doc, King, and Lee--get weapons from the arsenal. Ski with welding mask has joined them. They want to control Seaview not destroy it. King asks Ray (Ray dies in DOOMSDAY ISLAND--which aired later than THE CREATURE) to help him break in the lab. Chip finds the men are out of their cage and trying to get into the control room and the lab. Nelson's orders are to shoot them if need be. He warns Patterson about the Missile Room---the group are using metal cutters to get in. Pat cuts the power as Nelson advises and this slows them down from getting in. Crane and Ski rig emergency power batteries. Nelson puts a specimen from the monster into a tank. Sharkey operates the reo-stat battery and Nelson hits the monster with more power and shorts it out---it is destroyed. Sharkey wonders how they can short out the big one. They will need two A 33 atomic generator power packs and fly the Flying Sub, electrified by these, into the heart of the creature. Nelson tells Pat to use diving gear to meet him under the Flying Sub berth and to bring the power packs. Pat asks about using gas grenades on the men trying to break into the Missile Room--it could save time. Nelson yells, "Will you forget it and get started!"  Lee and Doc hear Pat and Nelson talking on the intercom. Pat says, "Aye sir."  He will swim under Seaview to where the Flying Sub is. A man goes in the vent and comes out into the Missile Room, hiding behind the silos (which look different from this angle). Pat sees the vent open and gets himself a wrench. He looks in and tosses a gas grenade in. The crewman attacks him from behind and there is a huge fight with good use of previous music. The man jumps Pat and then dumps a shelf onto Pat. The man goes to open the door to the others but Pat shoots him in the back!!! Ski tells Doc, "A few more minutes, Doc, we'll be through."  Nelson gets an idea to use gloves on Sharkey and have him carry the rheostat battery while Nelson uses the two main prongs to ward off the attackers. Nelson uses a stool to distract the two at the door. He hits the crewman and King. Using the battery and the prongs himself, Sharkey holds King off as Nelson leaves. Nelson runs down to Chip using the nose ladder and they shut the collision doors. Nelson goes down; Chip asks Pat if he is ready. Pat is in wet gear and rolls gas bombs at the door as it opens. Three men fall. But Crane rushes in and grabs the door to the diving tube, struggling with Pat, who has it from the other side. Pat was trying to get out. King, in the lab, tells Sharkey he doesn't want to hurt him--and he says it so kindly we almost believe him. He begins to influence Sharkey to lower the prongs, "Give them to me."  Sharkey begins to lower the prongs. King says, "Let me have them."  Sharkey lets him have them--by blasting him out of existence. A diver comes up the Flying Sub hatch to Nelson. Nelson talks to him, giving orders---but the diver, whom we and Nelson think is Patterson, just stands there, looking listless. We are lead to believe it is either Crane or someone else or, when we do recognize Patterson, that he is taken over already, his face impassive and behind the diving face mask glass. Nelson asks what's wrong with him and he tells him--Captain Crane was holding open the diving tube hatch and Pat had to hit him with a wrench--he thinks he killed him. Nelson tells him, "It's what I would have done if necessary."  Nelson orders him to attach the packs to the Flying Sub. Later, Pat returns from attaching the packs--we and Nelson think. But it is Crane and as Nelson talks orders to whom he thinks is Patterson, Crane attacks him from behind, dropping his face mask, and choking Nelson from around the neck behind him! "You can't do it, Admiral! We're a part of it now!"  Nelson yells, "No, Lee!"  Pat returns and holds Crane back so that Nelson can hit him. Soon, the Flying Sub drops out of Seaview, Crane tied to a chair. They see the monster out the viewport. Crane says, "Don't do it--if you kill it, you kill me, too and the others."  A blast hits and the Flying Sub shakes. Chip calls, "Admiral, do you read me?"  The Flying Sub shakes more and speeds right into the thing!

 

TAG

Chip continues to call. Nelson awakens. Pat is unconscious. The taken over men in Seaview, fall. Crane looks impassive, then indifferent. Then he struggles to get free. Nelson hits the controls and the thing blasts away and out of the sea--gone. Flying Sub drifts in an empty ocean whereas a few seconds ago the monster surrounded it. Nelson gets the Flying Sub back to Seaview. In Sickbay, the others find out Dr. King is dead. Crane wonders would King have returned to normal had he lived. Nelson says, "He was never normal in the first place."  Sharkey finishes for Nelson, "Otherwise he never would have used the creature the way he did."  Uhhh, excuse me, I thought the creature was using him and all the others---not King using the creature. Doc tells them the control of the monster ended and the others went back to normal just as the thing died---, "If it hadn't, I don't know what we'd have done."

Crane, sitting on the table-bed, says, "The Admiral would have thought of something."   Nelson, exuding rarely seen modesty, says, "Ohhhh, let's go, sickbay is no place for a well man."  Crane says, "Admiral, it's a pleasure!"  Seaview sails undersea and if you look closely, the reflection of the pool the model is in, is reflected off the windows---it is still a great effect though.

 

REVIEW: Not as bad as other takeover by monster-alien episodes and it has some very effective sequences. Lyle Bettger is an apt Dr. King (first name of the character Horace). A bit predictable but not as bad as its reputation. There are a number of good action sequences, Nelson remains as stoic as ever as he doesn't even bat an eyelid when discussing killing Lee if he has to (which he also did in DOOMSDAY ISLAND and a few other episodes). The effects are suitable and the monster not too over the top. In many ways, this is a chilling episode, if not the best of VOYAGE. It also has a lot in common with THE PLANT MAN but may be a bit better, being more atmospheric. Still, Seaview encounters giant creature which can either, take over people or make smaller versions of itself, usually losing the first round, hitting bottom. Flying Sub goes out and there is a repeat performance, usually ending up with the Flying Sub trapped. During all of this, a smaller version of the thing wrecks havoc on Seaview. Then there is some more rounds of which Seaview gets the upper hand, either on the smaller version or the larger one. It is all rather predictable but taken on its own merit, it can be fun. Well, it can be.

TEASER

World War II: 1945: Allied Destroyers use depth bombs on German U Boats (not on the U Boat of German Admiral Gustave Von Neuberg and Lt. Froelich as some sources say--which may have been in an early draft of the script). Two men, Gustave and Froelich are feeling the concussions in some deep sea base. While Froelich wants to use the missiles to easily destroy the Allied fleet, Neuberg resists the temptation--the missiles are for the use against the homelands of the enemies--and in 1000 years, Neuberg claims--they will be used. A canister containing gas falls as their base shakes. The two men are overcome and fall to the floor. 1980: Seaview is at 380 feet and the bottom is smooth. They see a mountain of moss--a cruiser maybe. Crane feels it is the wrong shape for a cruiser. Patterson gets a heartbeat on the hydrophone. Chip wonders, "How could it be a heartbeat--that thing looks like it dates from the year one."  The mine detector alarm goes off and a blast blows bubbles up at Seaview--which shakes predictably.

 

ACT ONE

Nelson comes down to the control room, wondering how a mine could be down at this depth. Seaview has one hour of damage repairing. As for the mound of moss, Nelson tells Lee, "You know we have to take a look."  Amid excellent diving music, Lee and Ski swim to the mound. The pair go inside the same installation we saw in 1945: Crane puts the power on. The air is musty but all right. They find Froelich down but Neuberg gets up from behind a console device, holding a gun on them, claiming they are prisoner of the Third Reich. He hits Crane when Crane thinks it is some kind of joke or masquerade. Neuberg tells him any more insults will result in his getting shot, then he gasps and falls unconscious. Crane calls Seaview from which Nelson asks, "Trouble?"  Crane answers, "I'm not sure yet--all I know is we have two men here still fighting World War Two."  Seaview sends the diving bell down. Sharkey comes into the base--a Weapons Lab of some kind. Soon, Doc, in sickbay, checks the two men--they were under some kind of drug. Neuberg awakens and recognizes Sickbay as a Naval one. The sickbay curtain screen is closed, closing off Doc's office from view. Neuberg asks to consult with his aide (gee, shouldn't you not allow that, Admiral Nelson and Capt. Crane?). Then, unbelievably, the two Nazis, are left alone in Sickbay to talk--the Master of Arms outside the door. Big deal. The Nazis see plans of Seaview on the wall. A British Admiral calls Nelson: Neuberg was 49 years old in 1945 and hadn't been heard from since 1944 and he was part of Germany's chief Naval Research--a lead scientist, he was. He would have to be in his 80s if it is the same man. Crane asks, "How could it be the same man?"  Nelson says, "Anything's possible, Lee."  They should know that by now.  Nelson suggests suspended animation. Neuberg questions Doc--there is no submarine like this--one like this couldn't possibly exist. Froelich knocks Doc down (as Doc was in THE FOSSIL MEN). Froelich thinks Nelson will go to the Weapons Lab. Neuberg says, "The Admiral will find nothing but death."  Sharkey and Nelson are already back there. Sharkey wonders if the two men are kidding--some kind of prank. Sharkey helps him open some kind of metal doors using a crowbar but a blast knocks them both down!

 

ACT TWO

The blast used knockout gas. Neuberg uses an anesthetic on the guards, which he and his aide lure into Sickbay. Taking the guards' guns, the two leave, Neuberg taking the Seaview plans and somehow, locks Sickbay's doors. Crane cannot reach Nelson and Sharkey or Doc in Sickbay. At the arsenal, the two Nazis knock out a man (who may be the Master of Arms) and lock him in the arsenal room. The duo invade the Missile Room next, knocking Patterson down after shooting two crewmen down. The two find their gas canisters aboard--Nelson wanted to examine the canisters. Crane finds Doc and the two guards who recover. Pat calls, needing help. Men take the two wounded missile room men out. Pat tells them some equipment is gone. Crane leaves for some explosives, none of the men realizing the two Nazis are hiding behind the missile silos. Froelich moves to shoot and kill Pat but four crewmen come in. Instead, he uses the gas on all of them. Neuberg sends him to the armory (which they just left?) and he leaves Seaview after ordering Froelich to destroy the sub control power system. Ski and two men (one is called Ron, the other possibly Kiley) look for Froelich, who hides behind a door in a room they are nearing. Crane calls all men to go to Corridor B--the Master of Arms was attacked before. In the lab, Neuberg holds a gun on Sharkey and Nelson, ordering them to drop their gun belts. Behind the wall is something to destroy the Allied homelands. Nelson tells Sharkey, "Let the baron tell us more."  Neuberg opens the doors where swastikas and other Nazis symbols are, some on the missiles--powerful missiles which Neuberg returned, he says, to fire on Paris, London, Moscow, and Washington DC--all Allied cities will be destroyed. Neuberg heils Hitler!    

ACT THREE

Neuberg closes the wall doors and talks in German, also telling them in English it is April 1, 1945. Sharkey says, "People can lose a day or two but 35 years!"  Nelson tells Neuberg it is October 3rd, 1980 and the war is over. Neuberg insists they are lying and that the Third Reich will rule the world. In a hall, Crane shoots at Froelich who fires back and nicks Crane's side and then enters the Automatic Maneuvering Control station. Ski wants to get Crane to sickbay. Ski tells Mr. Morton about Froelich. As acting commander, Chip orders Crane to Sickbay. Chip goes to the Control Room-nose locker and gets a gun. Froelich calls Chip (Froelich says his own first name and it sounds like Overheim or something like that). He demands from Chip unconditional surrender or he will blow the sub apart and gives Chip ten minutes. Sitting in a chair, Neuberg makes Sharkey and Nelson carry nerve gas for missiles. Sharkey wants to take a crack at him but Nelson says, "An infield hit can get a run across but a strike out doesn't help."  When Neuberg asks Nelson about this strange talk, Nelson tells him it is an American colloquialism like "a stitch in time."   Sharkey, while Nelson distracts Neuberg, drops a tank on him, aiming at the gun arm. Nelson rushes them and the trio have a huge fight which ends with Nelson punching Neuberg out. He then opens the doors to disarm the intercontinental missiles. Sharkey wonders how these came to be here--from 1944. Nelson figures the Allies knew the Germans were working on this type of advanced weaponry but didn't know how far along the Nazis had gotten. They go into the room but an electric charge across the door knocks them down. Chip tells a recovered Crane in Sickbay about what is happening. The revitalization monitor shows that Froelich has shut all vents--they can't use gas to knock him out. They have 50 seconds, Froelich reminds Chip, who stalls by telling the man they will the full time. Ski is igniting the door to the room just as the time is up. Ski and two men rush in and there is a blast. Seaview shakes. In the Nazi Lab, Nelson and Sharkey are tied up. The missiles are ready to fire as they are told by Von Neuberg.

 

ACT FOUR

Neuberg sieg heils but one missile blows him down and shakes the lab as the missile backfires. Nelson tells a recovering Neuberg to untie him and Sharkey--the lab is filling with water. Neuberg, at first seems defeated but realizes with Nelson's words of a new life and a whole new world outside, that there is still hope. When Nelson says, "We have to get back to the Seaview,"  Neuberg says, "You're right."  The lab shakes and one of the missiles rocks. Neuberg unties them. A blast rises up at Seaview and shakes it. Froelich leaves the vent and goes into the Missile Room and locks the door with a bar device. He sees the ball in the diving tube rise with the water in it--realizing someone is coming in. The explosion Froelich set for the men who rushed in, was forced aft to the diving controls section. Ski, at the last moment, saw Froelich go out the vent. The ducts from this room lead to the Missile Room and the Air Revitalization area. Chip orders the men to take Froelich and to, "...kill him if necessary."  Sharkey tells Nelson it is good to be back home again when they come into the Missile Room via the tube. Nelson says, "I'd agree but I didn't expect this particular welcoming committee."  Froelich is there with a gun. Nelson's diving suit is white-gray while Sharkey's is red. Nelson has brought back some of the nerve gas in the cylinder. Ever the scientist he wants to examine it just as he wants to examine the other gas for its potential as a preservative. Neuberg explains to Nelson, "All great concepts are basically simple."  He goes on to explain he will use Seaview to blow up the cities. Pat tells Crane it will be 30 minutes before Seaview is fully repaired. Crane is about to send Pat down to the Missile Room for some divers to go after Nelson and Sharkey (and Patterson would probably get bashed down again) but Chip calls and tells them Froelich is in the Missile Room. Pat is to get explosives, detonators, and cutting torches. Crane calls Froelich. Neuberg comments, "The poor Captain seems disturbed, perhaps he doesn't realize how disturbed he should be."  Neuberg must use the nerve gas on the men in order to fire the missiles. He has Froelich at a vent, ready to do this but Nelson yells at him to wait--the gas will recirculate and kill them. Nelson fakes that he is going to move controls to shut off the circulation but throws one of the Nazis's gas canisters (the other gas that made the two stay in some suspended state). Sharkey and Nelson battle Froelich and Neuberg. Froelich falls; Neuberg punches Nelson out. Sharkey is knocked out also. The two Nazis get up to fire the missiles. Froelich, however, falls again from the gas. Neuberg tries to fire the missiles and says, "Heil Hitler."  He fires one of the missiles. (hey, what about Fail Safe?).

 

TAG

Nelson and Sharkey slowly awaken (Nelson first again--he recovers faster and quicker all the time). Nelson gets gas mask for himself and Sharkey, who falls unconscious again. Nelson calls the Control Room. Number four missile fired wild. They must track it and intercept it. Crane fires an intercept rocket. Nelson falls again. Chip blows the door handle off and Crane leads the way in. Ski helps Sharkey up while Crane helps Nelson. They get to Sickbay. The intercept missile blows up the one Neuberg fired. Chip and Crane look at Neuberg--who has turned back into an 80 year old. Later Crane tells Nelson medical researchers in DC have analyzed the gas in the canisters-some type of unstable penthalytic acid based gas taken in large quantities kept the two in suspended animation. Fresh air helped revive them. We don't really find out what killed Neuberg--was it the gas Nelson threw at him? Was that the first gas--the youth gas or was it some of the nerve gas? It seemed to be the former since the later would have killed all of them. Also--why would Neuberg turn back to 80 when he died? Also--did Froelich die too? Nelson wonders if Neuberg and Froelich were the only ones who inhaled that gas. Crane asks him if he thinks there are other Nazis waiting to strike at the world again. Nelson laughs, "I think it's time we stop fighting World War II and set a course for Santa Barbara."                   

 

REVIEW: Some problems as noted in the text above but enjoyable and fast paced episode, John Van Dreelen making a top notch guest star--again--as he was in THE LAST BATTLE, also a Nazi episode and somewhat superior to this one. Now wouldn't it have been something if he could have played the same character returned somehow (the character he played--Colonel Alfred Shroder was seen killed by the blast in THE LAST BATTLE). Jan Merlin also returns--he was in NO WAY OUT (season one) and THE X FACTOR (season two). He has this almost mocking face---evil underneath and sly humor on the surface. The two guest stars help make this one rise above other third seasoners. Some sources have the two Nazi characters on a U Boat, taking supplies of the gases to the Deep Lab Base when attacked in 1945 and sunk. This is not in the finished episode--the two are in the Deep Sea Base when we first see them.
