TEASER

Under the ice (?), Norwegian Arctic Space Listening Station XZ5 gets an incoming windy-echo voice from deep space. Dr. Olaf Bergstrom and aide Sven Larson are manning it. Believing the alien beings are friendly, Bergstrom gives the voice what it wants--a laser beam to come in on. Sven tries to stop this but calls for help on the radio. The energy makes the door heat up and blast in, blows up controls, and blasts the radio. Sven falls in the blast.

 

ACT ONE

Seaview has found a break in the ice and rests with ice all around it. Sparks picked up Sven's message, 150 miles away. Seaview dives to 100 feet above the water (we see the 8 windowed movie version of Seaview) and then surfaces nose first, shooting up out of the water--a nice effect visually but not very smart for those inside. Sharkey and Crane go out in snow jackets. Via periscope, Nelson watches them walk out in the snow. They find Sven dead. Crane calls Seaview to send out the Snow Cat when they find Olaf alive. They also see a block of solid ice with some kind of glow or fire in it. The snow cat leaves (via stock footage from the color ELEVEN DAYS TO ZERO). Olaf tells the men aboard Seaview the alien came like the sound of wind and that his aide, Sven, didn't hear it. This is not true. Uh ho, diluted guest star mad scientist alert. Bergstrom thinks the entity wanted him to survive--it needs his help. It is from somewhere out there. Bergstrom insists it is friendly but he feels it may have made some mistakes and that when man goes into space he may antagonize alien creatures encountered via mistakes (a good point in an otherwise dull, routine script). D-7 has temperatures rising. That is where the ice block is. Nelson, Crane, and Bergstrom go to Sharkey and Ski--they see the door full of heat. Crane orders Sharkey and Ski to move in with CO2. The door blasts off; Bergstrom calls the entity. It is 115 in D-7 now with the air conditioner on. Bergstrom says they cannot take for granted that the alien is hostile. Nelson makes him admit it is dangerous to human life. It is a flame! Sharkey and Ski use CO2 on it and it goes. Bergstrom calls it murder. 108 degrees in the Control Room and 120 in mid ship. Sparks gets a strange voice like wind calling Bergstrom but loses it. Flame moves to the engine room and a much clearer voice tells them the temperature will not rise now. It wants to talk to Bergstrom. In what seems like a totally unrelated scene, Ski and Pat go to the engine room to check it out. Why? Didn't they know there was a heat monster in there? And if they didn't, why not, and why didn't anyone tell them? And wasn't anyone on guard outside the room? Pat wants to get out when he feels how hot it is. Ski calms him down. They pull the primary circuits but the flame rises up (music used is from JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and BENEATH THE 12 MILE REEF--Bernard Herrmann). Seaview shakes, the two men cough. The flame goes near the door and goes out. It won't let them out of the room, rising up each time they make a move to exit (we hear, probably for the first time, music from the Fox movie THE ENEMY BELOW which starred David Hedison--very good score and fitting to VOYAGE). Ski finds insulation on a pipe. He and Pat argue; Pat feels if they go, they will die; Ski says if they stay they will die. They use it to get past it but it flames the insulation and the two are thrown out into the hall by a blast. Nelson, Crane, and Bergstrom meet them as they pass out in Corridor 17-18. The three find smoking prints of flame like footprints!

 

ACT TWO

Crane calls Patterson by the name Malloy when talking to Nelson and Bergstrom about how it cut down Kowalski and Malloy. (?--is Patterson's first name Malloy?). Malloy seemed to be mentioned and seen in the first season as a minor crewman in a few episodes. To confuse matters some more, Malone was also a minor crewman in the first season---and some sources say Crane called Patterson Malone in THE HEAT MONSTER. Nelson, Crane, and Bergstrom find the flame being in the engine room. It wants thermal heat ray fired under the ice pack--reaching 3000 degrees under the hut. The flame gives them two hours. It tells them the heat will slowly rise until they do this. Bergstrom asks to talk to it. It fires flame at Nelson's arm when he resists its orders. They put it out. Chip tells them it is 124 in the engine room; 136 in F-2 section. Crane tells them to get men out to area G-9 and go on full AC power. The radios are out--it will take 3 hours to repair--and the repair parts are in area F-3. Chip tells them if the reactor room gets hotter (it is at 142 now), they may have to abandon ship. Nelson suggests flooding the engine room which is now 149. The controls to flood the engine room are tightened from the heat. Crane goes to open them from the engine room but Bergstrom punches him down, hides from a crewmen who are moving CO2, and goes to the Reactor Room to the flame life form. He tells it, "Meet us half way."  Flame comes at him and bids him to obey. It is 163 in the Reactor Room now. Crane tells Nelson about Bergstrom who comes into the Control Room but two crewmen disarm him. Nelson tells them to take him to the restraint ward. This is a wire cage similar to the one used in WEREWOLF in the SickBay. The cage looks like it is in the same room except it is not Sickbay--only the walls are the same! The Sickbay set was cleared out. Crane and Nelson go in and shoot CO2 at the flame but can't stop it. It commands them to do as it says or they will all be destroyed and it repeats the word destroyed two more times.

 

ACT THREE

Nelson gets to turn the valve but he and Crane get out--the temperature is 184 in the Reactor Room. Nelson figures there are more of the aliens under the ice, frozen. They need the Seaview to activate the thermal pack to free them. Nelson tells Lee to use the M74 to blow up the area of the hut. He tells him they can flood Seaview later and abandon her since in a half hour they are all finished. The flame goes to Bergstrom and tells him to destroy Crane and Sharkey, makes him invisible and tells him to go, opening the cage door for him. Crane and Sharkey take the Snow Cat out to the hut, discussing they have one half hour to get Seaview out (hey, are they ignoring the Admiral's plan to abandon Seaview?). In the hut, Sharkey and Lee see more blocks of ice--more aliens. Blowing up the hut--won't that just give the blocks more heat? Also--Bergstrom is invisible and the alien made his clothes invisible and presumably his gun, but without a coat, Bergstrom left Seaview in the snow and followed the Snow Cat on foot!!! The hut hatch opens and closes. He stops them from leaving, tosses a stool and punches Sharkey, all while invisible. Sharkey gets a hold of him but he loses him. Crane shoots and hits Bergstrom--who drops the gun and they see blood drops in the snow. They leave, the bomb ticks away.

 

ACT FOUR

When Sharkey and Lee get back into the control room, it is deserted. When Sharkey mentions you can almost touch the heat, Crane remarks you can see it--the flame, now added to smoke in the nose, is there. In the Missile Room, Chip and Nelson direct divers to the tube hatch to try to cut their way out. They also warn Lee that the flame creature went forward. The divers try to cut through the upper escape hatch--all the doors are locked from the heat expanding the metal. Nelson tells Phil to activate the hatch. It is 153 degrees now. Anderson, one of the divers in the hatch, calls--they cannot cut through five feet of steel--the hatch is melded onto the deck. In the control room, Bergstrom reappears. At quarter to three, the bomb will go off--and blow up the flame (?). It knocks Bergstrom down and tells the others to deactivate the bomb or Seaview will boil. Bergstrom gets up and calls to Nelson--it can die--cold will kill it (no, duh!?) and he suggests liquid oxygen--why didn't they think of this sooner or try it sooner--because then there would be no story--that'd be GOOD!!! This reminds of the much better movie versions of THE BLOB. Except in those movies, they find out by accident the blob can be frozen--but the men should have realized heat...cold...duh. The flame shoots two fire lines at Bergstrom and he falls, dead. It tells them to all die, die. Nelson and Crane in protective suits and shoot liquid oxygen at the flame beast. Screams rise as does steam. The bomb goes off as the two pilot Seaview out of the ice area. Ice falls all around Seaview and shakes it wildly.

 

TAG

Nelson and Crane pilot Seaview away. Bergstrom is dead. Lee says, taking off his protective helmet and unbuttoning his suit, "You know something, Admiral, it's cold in here."   Nelson says, "Let's, uhh, be thankful for all small favors Lee." 

 

REVIEW: What? THE HEAT MONSTER follows almost no logic whatsoever. Alfred Ryder cannot do for this episode what he did for THE PHANTOM STRIKES and THE RETURN OF THE PHANTOM. He is given mostly silly lines, a short inferior retread of THE INVISIBLE MAN segment, and a script full of holes. Blow up the ice that is holding the heat monsters? Ryder also uses an accent that sounds silly...a bed Norwegian accent. This episode also doesn't work as goofy camp as THE FOSSIL MEN does. The only redeeming value of it is to hear the music lifted from THE ENEMY BELOW and see the Seaview once again near the ice in snowy areas. Below par.

 

THE FOSSIL MEN

TEASER

Pat picks up a sound which could be whales feeding on plankton. Seaview goes down 30 fathoms (200 feet). Nelson shows Crane a book on sea lore--about 300 years ago British ships were destroyed in a maelstrom. Survivors told of a rock symphony. Crane dismisses it as legend but Nelson tells him there's often a hard core of fact in the old fables. Seaview vibrates up and down, then sideways as bubbles hit it. The collision screens are closed (we hear ENEMY BELOW music--always nice to hear). The sub levels off but the stabilizers are ruptured. They hear a banging noise. Nelson and Crane go forward, open the screens, and see a rock man floating outside the viewports, banging on the windows!

 

ACT ONE

Excellent stock music as we see the rock figure. Crane wonders what it was they saw. Nelson says, "I don't know."  Crane orders Sharkey to ready divers to go out (why, if they know there might be something dangerous out there?). Sharkey goes to Ski and Richards in the Missile Room--Richards is a new man. Ski asks Sharkey, "What's the poop?"  Richards is told by the Chief they must be ready for anything tricky; Ski tells Sharkey that Richards passed the frog man's test. Sharkey tells, "You have to be ready to take whatever comes at you out there."  Nelson tries to explain the rockman to Lee as some form of marine growth. Lee asks, "You, ahh, believe that?"  Nelson says, "No."  Richards tells Lee he can handle it when he goes down to check who is going. Crane briefs the two and tells Richards to stay close to Ski. As they leave, we hear some diving music used before and after and it sounds really very good and fits the sequence. Turbulence---big bubbles hit the two. Seaview's rudder is repaired. Nelson tells the others, "Seeing isn't necessarily believing." Pat picks up noises; Nelson claims, "We're in for trouble."  Bubbles hit Seaview; Pat hits his head. Frame 74 has a fire--the Circuitry Room. The Master Panel goes; fire detail goes down to it but without any real fire suits. Sharkey has to get one of the men out of the room. Crane and Nelson help attack the fire. Nelson wants to seal off the section and flood it (?). The two men taken out are okay. Chip tells Crane one diver is missing. Ski comes back in and tells them the big bubbles that hit them, separated them. Ski says, "All of a sudden giant bubbles hit us."   He also relates that he heard clicking noises like rocks rubbing together."   Nelson and Sharkey go out in the Flying Sub to look for Richards; divers also go out and they find him floating and bring him back to Seaview. Nelson is told this by Crane but wants to search the area anyway. Crane tells Chip to keep a close tab on the Flying Sub, "We don't want to lose them now."  Sharkey and Nelson hear bangs; Sharkey turns on the hydrophone. Nelson goes toward a cave--the source of the sound. The Seaview Doctor claims something weird attacked Richards who is in shock and was brought in clutching a fossilized growth. The current grabs up the Flying Sub and is pulled even though Nelson orders back full. (more ENEMY BELOW music for the rest of the episode). Sharkey puts emergency power on but a blast hits the controls. Chip wonders how Patterson could lose the Flying Sub and tells Lee the Flying Sub may have exploded after he checks the sonar. The Flying Sub levels off. Nelson asks Sharkey if he is all right and Sharkey says, "I'm all muscle,"  but his back is hurt. They see an underwater grotto and Nelson orders Sharkey to break out the raft. As they raft to the beach and look around we hear the dino music from JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (fitting for this bleak, deserted rock like area--dark and dismal like the set). Sharkey says, "Lovely place for a massacre."  Nelson notes nothing edible here, nothing could survive here. They find a 500 year old 17th Century Flintlock. Sharkey toys with it and it goes off, scaring Nelson. Sharkey says, "I, uh, I didn't know it was, uh..."   Nelson finishes the sentence, "...didn't know it was loaded...that is one of the sorriest phrases."  Nelson turns to look around and Sharkey sees the rock where he shot, start to move, "The rock is moving."  Nelson says, "What? What do you mean--the rock is moving."  Sharkey says it again. They both face it as the rock man moves at them, nearly backing them to the rock wall!

 

ACT TWO

Chip feels Richards is the key to what happened to the Flying Sub. Admiral Nelson talks to the rock, telling it they are friends to it. Sharkey also tries, stating they come in peace. Nelson says, "It's like talking to a brick wall!"  He uses a rock to avoid it but three more surround them as they make for the raft. On Seaview, Ski visits Richards, who is sweating, acting odd, and unfriendly. Richards does not act nice to Ski and hits his arm away from him, telling him to go away. Ski tells Doc. We see a photo of an aircraft carrier in Doc's office area. Ski leaves. Doc checks Richards and sees that his arm is now like dark stone. Richards attacks Doc, knocks him down and leaves SickBay. A new rock man, one who seems more human looking with human eyes, appears. It clicks its fingers and stops the attack on the Admiral and the Chief. He was Capt. Jacob Wren of the submarine Troilius which Nelson recalls went down 30 years ago. His voice is matter of fact as he explains this to the two men. One fourth of a million years ago, the rockmen were also human but an eruption trapped them and the forces in the magma made them mutants. Wren asks them to stay to see more but Sharkey turns to the raft and Nelson and says, "We gotto get back to the ship, right, sir?"  Nelson turns, "Right!"  The two are stopped by Wren's answer. Two rock men take another man--who has a human head and face (except they are somewhat purple and rocky like marble) and a fossil rock body into the caves where he is pushed by the two stone guards into a lava pit--the ritual fire. Wren calls it the washing out of impurities of the human race--more like preserving them forever if you ask me! This newly made fossil man is brought up and looks like the others--a full fossil man. Where did he come from? Was he one of Wren's crew? Certainly he wasn't the original group of rock men? They would be all rock by now (just like some radio stations). Wren offers them immortality if they want it. Nelson gets to the point, "You plan to do that to us whether we want to or not--wh..why...why do you want to do it--why?"  Wren tells him they need Seaview. Richards goes to Nelson's cabin and punches in the safe and gets the firing procedures for the missiles and puts them in his pants (?!). A crewman comes in and jumps him and is flipped and knocked out. Richardson goes to the circuitry room, chokes a crewman down and throws Ski, then, busy as a beaver, attacks the circuits. The choked man uses a wrench on Richards but he fights the man and Ski off. Richards goes berserk on the controls. Sparks fly and Seaview over the bottom of the sea.

 

ACT THREE

Seaview levels off as men put out fires. Ski reports. Chip and Crane go to help Ski. Nelson tells Wren the fossil men cannot go to the surface--they'll die. Wren goes to assemble a council and clicks orders to a guard. Crane, Chip, and Ski find Richards in the Circuitry Room, now a full rock man. He throws Lee and Chip off him but Ski manages to calm him from raising his arm against them. Richards warns them to go while they still can--the old Richards seems worried about them, especially Ski. They get out and he rushes the door. Crane says, "He's past being helped--now we've gotto help ourselves."  Crane sends Ski to get a portable forcefield. Richards smashes his arm through the wall. Nelson throws a torch to Sharkey and gets another as the rock man attacks the Chief. It picks up and drops Nelson when he attacks it. Ski uses the forcefield on Richards and he moves back. Crane wants to use the sonic machine--explosives are too dangerous. Chip reminds him the sonic machine is still experimental and may blast Seaview apart. Sharkey and Nelson fight the rock man and he falls into the lava pit via Nelson. The two men run for the raft outside the cave but a rockman comes up from the ground and grabs Sharkey. Nelson uses a rock on it and they shove off in the raft. Wren and others follow, Wren, oddly intoning threats--his voice strange and almost mechanical (due to being dubbed probably). The pair get to the Flying Sub and use full emergency power. Fossil men appear at the window and are on the diving planes, another comes up from the floor hatch. They shock them all off. In Seaview, Crane tries testing the sonic vibration on the gun. The wrong intensity could destroy the hull; rather annoyingly Chip keeps reminding Lee of this and even tells him they will find something else to stop the new fossil man---who knocks Ski and the forcefield down. Ski warns the Skipper (Lee Crane) and Crane warns the crew. Before Chip can lock the door to the Missile Room, Richards comes in but Crane uses the sonic gun (rifle?) to knock him out of it. Richards falls and Crane asks, "Is he dead?"  Chip replies, "I can't tell!"  They haul him to a nearby storage room and lock him in. The Flying Sub comes back up Seaview. Nelson and Sharkey emerge from the hatch door. All of them hear banging. They go to check on Richards who is being guarded by Ski with the sonic gun. The escape hatch in the Missile Room makes sounds, making SKi put the sonic gun down. Wren and two other fossil men come out of the missile room. Richards bursts out of the door and prevents Ski from reaching the sonic gun. Wren says, "This is what you shall now all become."

 

ACT FOUR

Wren tells them he will make them immortal. Nelson tells the rock man, "Offer refused."    He says, "As you wish..."  and clicks his rock fingers, sending one rock man at them. Nelson to get Sharkey to set it at 150 thousand decibels which can possibly blow up Seaview reminds him, "You've seen that grotto."  Sharkey blows up the rock man. Richards and Wren go into the Missile Room; Sharkey blows up another rock man who came at them, despite knowing it would destroy him (?)--why did Wren send him at them--to protect himself and Richards probably. Nelson orders Sharkey to get plastic explosives so Ski takes the sonic gun. Nelson appeals to Wren explaining he is not completely fossilized yet--perhaps they can find a way to help him. Wren wants to be this way--he wants to be immortal and tells the Admiral to surrender for his orders, otherwise he will missile attack the US. Crane is in the ducts (where else? In one MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER, Crow jokes that the Japanese boy in TIME OF THE APES, going one way, is afraid he will run into David Hedison coming from the other direction). Nelson fakes a surrender, stalling Wren, coming into the Missile Room alone while Ski hides behind the door. Wren orders Nelson to take Richards to the Control Room and turn over control of Seaview to him. Nelson stalls--Richards isn't qualified to run Seaview. He runs to and out of the door, holding it open for Kowalski to fire now. Ski blows up Richards. Wren pulls on the door, "You have gained nothing but death now, Admiral."  Nelson tries to hold it open but Wren quickly shuts it. Lee is already in the Missile Room, via the ducts and starts disarming the missile silos. He uses one of the silo door hatches against Wren as Wren spots him and rushes him. Crane manages to disarm more but Wren continues his attack on him. Lee gets a metal pipe and hits Wren. Sharkey runs down the hallway with explosives and the others blow off the lock from the door--this action scene, very exciting, is augmented greatly by the excellent music used here (sounding like stock music). Lee falls and dropping the pipe, is about to be beaten some more by the fossil man--in fact, one blooper is that Wren raises his arm at least three times to hit Crane---who is stuck under him---helpless. Wren waits to raise it and could have hit Crane three times but waits for just the right second for Nelson to come rushing in, have Nelson grab the pipe, and continue hitting him (as Lee was before this). In other words, the actor in the Rock Man suit hesitated to hit Crane until Nelson could get in to stop him! Nelson beats Wren back. There's some kind of a blast and everyone falls.           

 

TAG        

Propulsion fuel hit Wren down but he comes to and warns them, "Others will follow me."  The sonic gun blows him up. Seaview at Nelson's orders, fires torpedoes to blow the grotto closed forever. In the control room nose Lee and Nelson sit in front of the window. Nelson reads from the book of fables, "Then the pounding came-- terrible pounding as if the heart of satan himself were beating, an evil hymn of the rocks as a band of devils sounded from the deep."

Crane smiles, "I guess that's what it sounded like to the sailors 300 years ago."   Nelson says, "You know something, Lee, they weren't too far wrong."

 

REVIEW: I really like THE FOSSIL MEN. Yes, I acknowledge it is one of the goofiest episodes but for some reason, I like it. Perhaps it is because, Basehart and Terry Becker look like they are having so much fun making this one. It is absurd and in hindsight, knowing they were cracking up, talking to rocks---it is easy to say that. But before that was known, their antics came across on screen and were appreciated by me anyway. The entire thing was just so fantastic and quickly paced, intercutting between Seaview action and the Grotto action. To be fair, FLASH GORDON'S TRIP TO MARS did the Clay People melding into the rocks much better than here but the effects were adequate if not totally convincing. Richards was one of the more interesting crewmen to be taken over and it is a shame he had to die...he might have made an interesting character. Something about Wren's voice made the whole thing even more bizarre---perhaps because one couldn't see him moving his lips or because his lines were dubbed later. For a big bulky monster, the voice sounded a bit too matter of fact and you don't say! Although Crane wouldn't use explosives, Nelson doesn't seem to have any qualms about it. This episode was Basehart's and Becker's ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN and that is a complement--I thought this one very funny and entertaining in many ways. Of course, poor Doc had to get knocked out...and we don't get to see him recover this time either! But he does. A fun campy episode played completely straight by Del, David, and Dowdell. THE MERMAID

TEASER

Crane sends Sharkey to give Nelson a top secret message while Seaview is taking a marine census of seals. Chip tells Lee, "It's not exciting."  Lee says, "It's a living."  (In some sources and possibly the original script, Seaview picks up some unusual sonar bleeps but this is only read by the sonar man in the TV version to be more seals). Crane goes forward and sees a medium sized seal, then a mermaid! He calls Chip but she's gone and the seal is back. Lee tells him, "You're going to think I've gone psycho but I saw a mermaid."  Chip thinks it is only the reflection of light from the surface but when he moves away from the nose, through the windows, Lee sees the mermaid again. 

 

ACT ONE

We hear DEADLY INVASION music. Nelson is laughing at Lee, telling him mermaid legends are as old as sailing itself--usually the sighting is only a seal or a manatee. Crane wonders why Nelson won't question that and wants to investigate. Nelson refuses to allow it. Crane tells Chip, "I can't understand--he's always kept an open mind."  They have 30 minutes until they surface near an island which is 100 yards off the east coast. Crane tells Sharkey in the Missile Room (where we see the Missile Room giant scanner against the entrance wall--not near the missile firing panel as it was in THE MERMEN) that when they surface, he wants an M4C scooter, an aqualung, a face mask, flippers, and a raft---no wet suit will be needed as the water is warm (it Lee needs to be shirt less and in this gear to match the stock footage used from some mermaid movie---the actress from which was rehired to appear in this episode's original footage!). Sharkey tells the Captain that going alone is against the regulations (hasn't it been done before in other episodes?). Crane asks him to forget the book on this one. Seaview surfaces; Crane in a yucky yellowish-green sweater leaves up the Control Room hatch. Chip asks if he is to inform the Admiral and Crane tells him to tell him...Chip finishes the statement, "You've jumped ship?"  Crane answers, "Tell him I've got a little shore leave coming, say I decided to take it here."  He takes a raft to the island and uses a scooter to search (wearing only his bathing trunks). At times, it does not appear to be David Hedison in the long shots (and probably isn't--it's either stock footage or a stunt man). The mermaid hides behind a rock undersea. Nelson asks Sharkey where the Captain is. Sharkey stalls, "Captain Crane, sir?"  Nelson is cranky, "You do know Captain Crane?"  Sharkey tells Nelson to talk to Mr. Morton. Nelson asks Chip, "Lee?"  Chip tells him. Nelson exclaims this Mermaid obsession of Lee's is more than he can deal with now. He has Sparks try to raise him and get him back at once. Lee sees a seal. Nelson, angry that Lee has no radio, tells Chip, "I'll have to let you in on this."  The ONI contacted him and Nelson tells Chip--not really inspiring much confidence, "Until Captain Crane comes aboard--at this moment--you're it."  There is a nuclear powers meeting about disarmament--Nelson informs Chip in his cabin--a power put a bomb on the California coast. When Chip asks why, Nelson, crankier than ever, bawks, "I think that the reason is fairly obvious."  He tells him to upset the nuclear powers and start World War Three. The bomb is immune from searching instruments and they must find it in three hours before the conference opens. Crane chases the mermaid into a large shark; she goes under it. The shark comes right at Lee.

 

ACT TWO

Nelson makes Chip go back to the island. He is cranky and snaps at Chip to order a change of course. Lee hides from the shark and picks up the mermaid's tail (pun intended) again. He hides the scooter in seaweed and follows her as she rides on the fin of the shark. Lee then finds her alone. Seaview is two hours earlier than Lee's request of 18 hundred hours and surfaces full up bubble. Crane is on the shore and puts his shirt on. He views Seaview surfacing through binoculars. The mermaid is in the raft, her face and upper body covered, her tail fins hanging out. Sharkey looks at him through Seaview's periscope, "I see the Skipper and get a load of the fish he caught."  Sharkey wonders if it is a dolphin. Chip tells Sharkey, "I hope it is a dolphin."  Nelson and Chip confer--he's been back aboard for 20 minutes and hasn't joined them. Chip comments, "Something's wrong with him."  Nelson admits, "I've never known him to act like this."  Chip tells Nelson about the fish Lee caught. Crane has locked himself in the lab. Ski tells Sharkey that his order is "...the lab is off limits to everyone."  They discuss the events. Sharkey tells Ski the guys on detail think the fish is some kind of mermaid. Ski laughs. Nelson comes and Lee opens the door to his knock. Nelson asks, "What is wrong with you?"  He sees the mermaid in the tank (which is obviously not filled with water). Crane used tranquilizers on her, ignores Nelson's talk, and then takes the report Nelson wants him to read, glances at it, and hands it back, "Very well, I've read it."  Crane tells Nelson she lead him to a whole colony. He wonders what her reaction to the drug will be--hoping it won't hurt her. Nelson slaps him but he keeps talking about the mermaid. Nelson walks out, telling Ski, "Nobody is to enter or leave without my permission."  Ski asks what about the Skipper (Lee Crane) and Nelson says, "Especially not Captain Crane!"  A merman enters a new hatch in the Pressurized Hatch room and fights crewman Thompson and tosses him into the water. Nelson hears it and comes running. He chokes it but it fights him. Nelson throws equipment at it and jumps on it (?). He punches it but it hits him down and his hands fall over the water hatch and into the water.

 

ACT THREE

Sharkey finds  Nelson who wants it taken alive with tranquilizers. Sharkey calls Smitty and Haines. Haines asks, "You want us, Chief, we're off duty."  Sharkey tells them he needs volunteers for extra hazardous duty and they are it. He wants them to bring the creature back alive. As they leave, the creature is behind them in the hall. In the missile room the three get tranquilizer guns loaded and ready when the creature surprises them. It throws all three off him, picks one up and throws him at the other two, knocks Sharkey into the controls on a missile silo which spark and knock him down. One crewman jumps on a hook near where the mini sub should be but isn't and kicks both the monster and the other crewmen down. Sharkey wakes up and the men trip the creature over him. The two men rush to get the tranquilizer rifles but it dumps a shelf on them. It runs out. Sharkey helps the two men up, "Okay Smitty?"  Smitty says, "I think so."  Sharkey warns the men to stay clear of the corridors. We hear music that is used more often in THE TIME TUNNEL--stock music used a few times on LOST IN SPACE (notably in THE LOST CIVILIZATION and briefly in THE ASTRAL TRAVELER). The sequence with Smitty and Haines is a strange one. These two don't really appear ever before in the show nor again. They are obviously stunt men, not actors, and they sound really odd. For the first time, stunt men, get more lines. At times, other minor crewmen talk but these two, minor crewmen, get names and talk--one of the first times this happened. The thing is in the Circuitry Room. The lights on Seaview flicker. The mermaid wakes up and the generator goes. Seaview shakes. Lee falls and is unconscious. The mermaid smiles. Seaview shakes. Chip in the Control Room, falls over. Seaview hits rocks again and we see its backside again. The mermaid sees Nelson trying to wake Lee up. Nelson cannot reach the control room on the mike, so he helps Ski up outside the door to the Lab, telling him, "We're on the bottom. Get Captain Crane to sickbay."  Nelson goes but the door to the Lab closes by itself before Ski can move in. It is locked again. The mermaid smiles and watches Lee on the floor. It is obviously the woman's legs inside that fake tail. She seems to have telepathic powers and over Lee, Nelson tells Chip, then asks, rudely, who changed his orders to find the creature. Chip tells him he did since the power is going--he rerouted men to the Circuitry Room. Nelson says, "There is a creature loose on this ship."  Chip and Nelson leave the Control Room. Sharkey and crewman Phil have a hatch shut practically on their faces. Sharkey hides in a room and sees Ski and says, "Hey!"  Sharkey startles him so Ski jumped, fists raised, yelling. As impossible as it sounds, Ski begins, the door to the lab closed by itself but Sharkey tells him, "That is not impossible to me."   Sharkey tells Chip and Nelson in the hall by the hall ladder. Chip figures it could be the shifting on the bottom as they settle. Nelson agrees it could happen--once but not twice. Ski tells them he heard the click of the lock. Nelson, Sharkey, Ski, and Chip enter the Circuitry Room and hit it, along with four other crewmen, with tranquilizer rifles. They get it and strap it down. Why? Why not get it and the mermaid off Seaview? Crane wakes up and knows the mermaid did this to his mind. He remembers everything now. Normal power restores. Crane admits to her he was wrong bringing her here, "Don't make the rest of these men pay for my mistake."  He makes a deal with her--he will set her free if she can help them find the bomb. If it goes off, Lee tells her, she and all her friends in the grotto may be harmed. He wants her to lead them to it. She doesn't or can't talk. Nelson fixes circuits in the Circuitry Room. Morton calls: Seaview is ready to lift off. It does. The lab door is open and the mermaid is gone. Crane watches in the Pressure Hatch Room as he lets her down the floor hatch and she smiles at him. She goes down and Crane begins to walk out of the room but stops. A man goes to see the strapped down monster. It gets up and fights him and crushes his head (this scene is taken whole from THE MERMEN). Crane thinks he hears something and walks out of the Pressure Hatch Room. More from THE MERMEN: the thing drops shelves and smashes out the wall right into Crane. It attacks him against the wall.

 

ACT FOUR

Crane is beaten down in the hallway. Sharkey, Ski, and Nelson find him. Lee says, "It came through the wall,"  in delirium. The thing in another hall has roars accompanying it but there is no mouth movement (obvious in this scene but also occurring in others). It looks in the lab and a crewmen comes in as it looks into the small fish tanks on the far right wall. It grabs the man so he throws glass beakers at it. It throws the man down and leaves. The crewman gets up and tries to warn the Control Room. Alarm in B-23 shows an explosion--the lab. Chip sends a fire team as the man falls amid fire and a blast. The monster jumps out the floor hatch in the Pressure Room. The bomb is mapped out on a diagram--it is the bomb from THE LOST BOMB. It is sophisticated. Crane tells Nelson, "I've got professional help they've never counted on."  Nelson wonders if the mermaid understood Lee at all. They see her outside the nose viewports. Nelson says, "Okay, you win."  Dead slow, Seaview follows her as Nelson shakes his head, conceding the impossible is possible. In the Missile Room, Crane tells Ski to keep out of sight once they dive outside. Other divers will neutralize the bomb defenses, then he and Ski will disarm it. Crane follows the mermaid to the bomb (which has sounds like the Jupiter II--actually sound effects from the FANTASTIC VOYAGE movie and used over and over---effectively, on Irwin Allen shows). Lee calls Ski to move in (we hear some Season One music). Watching on the screen (what seems to be a smaller screen) in the Missile Room, Sharkey spots the monster heading at the second diver team. Nelson sees it too and they watch as it attacks the divers. This is more MERMEN footage. Nelson waits quite a long time (for the stock footage to end) to order Chip to laser it from Seaview's nose. It just happens to be swimming past Seaview's nose windows at Lee and Ski (this is not impossible as the Seaview is in front of the bomb and so are Ski and Lee). Chip lasers it and it falls to the bottom (more MERMEN footage and not as long as the previous footage). Nelson says, "Good work, Chip!"  For once, thanking Chip for something in this episode. The lights on the bomb are TV sensors. The divers report their instruments are smashed and they cannot neutralize the bomb. Nelson explains to Lee how to do it. Flashes on the bomb are used to scare away fish as is a high frequency signal. Crane tells Nelson, "It almost scared us away."  There are upright poles which are electric eyes that can explode the bomb. Ski uses a mirror to reflect the beam and they have to avoid the mines everywhere. Nelson says, "One false move and we're all dead."  The crescent wrench can be used to release the lock on the side of the bomb. Ski starts to do this but the wrench falls from his hand!

 

TAG

Crane catches the wrench. Nelson shakes his head. Ski opens the bomb and Lee takes the unit out without touching the sides of the round opening. Lee calls, "It's out---what do we do now?"  Nelson laughs, "You can drop it and come aboard, it's disarmed."  Drop it? Are the mines deactivated once the bomb is? Who knows? Nelson gives Lee his official well done from the higher ups. Crane tells, "Thank you, Admiral, but I feel as if it's addressed to the wrong person."  Nelson admits they saw the mermaid but for now, perhaps it is best if she stays just an old sea folk tale.

 

REVIEW: There is a lot to like about this episode. First, it starts out as being very different from other episodes this season---and the whole first act is quite tense with Lee going against Nelson, even if he is trying to be subtle about it. The stock from MERMAID OF TIBURON helps give this episode a surreal feel to it. The music is also very different, either new or taken from that movie. The bomb appears in other VOYAGEs and a few LOST IN SPACE episodes. The bomb disarming sequence was good but would have been better if we hadn't seen similar sequences before (THE LOST BOMB, THE PEACEMAKER)--much of it seems to be stock footage again even if it isn't. The episode nearly falls apart due to the overabundance of stock footage in acts three and four with the merman monster. Even the parts of the monster attack that are not stock footage seem to fail since--one--the attacks in the missile room and the lab on the lone crewman (who dies?) seem like filler material to expand the episode; two--how much more interesting could it have been if the merman was as human like as the mermaid--perhaps this is just one of their protector army men--you know like ants have--but this merman couldn't be the mate for the mermaid that was in the tank; and three--it belittles the show to repeat so much that has been done before. In addition, killing the beast who merely came to find the girl (the only girl in seasons three and four!) seems wrong. I guess it has to pay for killing so many crewmen. As GORGO, GAPPA THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTER, MOTHRA, and other monster movies, the monster only came to get one of its own back to where she belonged. VOYAGE has more in common with classic and B-monster movies than almost all the other three Irwin series together. Nelson is more than cranky in this episode, not really seeming to have much faith in Chip Morton, snapping at Ski and slapping Crane when the man is obviously not himself. This is a good aspect of the character that is hardly explored much but it seems out of character in this season--perhaps the script was from a left over script for season one or two. Diane Webber is a strange looking woman, just right for a mermaid. But those same scenes of Seaview hitting bottom are repetitious enough to bore anyone--they are technically very good but did they have to appear in so many episodes in this third season!?!

TEASER

Crane and Nelson are in formal suits and are underwater via the Flying Sub so as not to attract attention when they get to the pier. Sharkey coughs aboard Seaview to get Chip's attention and asks for what the word is on this hush, hush mission--the Admiral and Captain have been gone one hour. Chip answers, "The Admiral had his reasons."  Flying Sub is at the pier. Crane is worried about them bringing a sarcophagus which is over 3000 years old--the Curator told this to Lee. We see NYC out the Flying Sub window. Crane seems hesitant at the controls. We hear stock music which sounds Egyptian or Biblical, possibly BEN HUR music or something that sounds similar. The sarcophagus, behind the two men, snaps open from the left side. A hand moves it some more!

 

ACT ONE

Water moves outside the Flying Sub window. Crane falls unconscious in his chair. Nelson uses smelling salts. Nelson wants Doc to look him over. Crane says he is all right but Nelson wants to be sure. Flying Sub lifts off and goes up still undersea--but it was on the dock? It goes up into Seaview. Nelson tells Ron to get Lee to Sickbay and orders Chip to set Seaview due east. Lee is in a yellow robe in Sickbay. Doc gives him a sedative to relax his nerves but Lee insists there's nothing wrong. To Nelson, Doc explains--he has a mild nervous disorder and needs rest. Lee feels great, he says. Nelson insists, "Doc is here to make exactly those decisions."  Nelson asks for Mr. Morton to report to him as he is now acting captain. At full speed, Seaview can hardly make it to deliver the sarcophagus to the Mid East. Unrest is in the Mid East (and what else?)--the box is a national treasure belonging to one of the countries. It was found 70 years ago by American archaeologists and brought to the States. The new government in the old country is on a crusade to get back its national treasures---returning the mummy now could help prevent a war--in 70 hours the cabinet meets to discuss peace. Factions who would want to provoke war would also want to stop Seaview's mission. Nelson says, "Chip, I'm depending on you to deliver that cargo on time."  We hear DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL music a great deal in this episode. Someone with a light goes into the cargo room--the main storage locker---Chip who looks at the sarcophagus. At first, it was shot to make us think it could have been someone else--possibly Crane. Nelson is reading a book in bed when Morton calls him--he is going off watch now. It is night and Nelson tells him to get a good night's sleep. Crane is in bed. The mummy opens the sarcophagus. Its right arm seems useless (is this in homage to Universal's Mummy movie series with Kharis the mummy--actually beginning with Boris Karloff's mummy called Im-ho-tep). Two crewmen work. The mummy waves a hand over the lights and puts them out. Variations of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL music play as the man calls the other Mack. The Mummy attacks, they fight it, it roars. Both men fall unconscious. The Mummy puts a hand over their faces and goes out another door. I fail to see what this whole sequence added to the episode---well, maybe not--it added time. It seemed to be just filler. Mack wakes up and both men don't recall a thing about the attack. Ski and Sharkey talk. Ski says, "That box in the main storage locker is a mummy case and there's a mummy inside."  He's worried but Sharkey tells him it is dead and cannot harm him. Sharkey wants to knock on wood but jokes that he can't find any on this ship to knock on wood. Mummy goes to Lee's cabin in one creepy sequence with darkness and the music giving an added eeriness to it all. Crane gets up and fires a gun at it.

 

ACT TWO

Brief MYSTERIOUS ISLAND like music as Nelson hears shots. Nelson finds Crane on the floor. Doc and Chip, in robes, rush in. Crane doesn't remember firing a full clip and gets back into bed--wearing his ring! Later, someone is in the Circuitry Room--Capt. Crane? Simpson, a crewman, sees the Flying Sub hatch move and goes down. The controls are ripped out. He has a flashlight. The mummy is there and kills him by choking him (good stock music here). Morning: Seaview is making excellent running time. Ski shows Sharkey that the compass is showing a position which is not where they should be. Sharkey repeats Ski's phrase to Chip, "How many times has this computer been wrong?"  They are ten hours off schedule--the Circuitry Room control settings were altered. Sparks gets a Top Priority Message from the state department: the meeting is happening 12 hours sooner. Sparks is not Arch Whiting as is clearly obvious. He is called Sparks though. Nelson feels they can make the deadline if they use the Flying Sub. Nelson stops Chip from ordering that the sarcophagus be placed on the Flying Sub--the less who know the better. Sharkey finds Simpson dead in the Flying Sub. Nelson says, "Simpson, I'm very sorry to hear about that,"  as the carry him past. They are 24 hours off the deadline and cannot make the meeting. Crane arrives and says they should run at flank speed. The engines cannot take it but Crane asks, for the record, if he is in command here. Nelson says, "Yes."  Chip tells Crane someone tampered with the auto navigation. Crane orders guards posted. In a hall, Sharkey sees a shadow on the wall--Crane. Ski relieves Matt in guarding the mummy box. In the hall by himself now, Crane gets dizzy as the mummy comes out of his box. Ski finds the box empty. The mummy hides behind crates but Ski sees it anyway. It chokes him as he presses the alarm. Crane falls under the deck ladder and Sharkey passes but doesn't see him. The tomb is closed again. Ski is on the floor when Nelson comes in--Ski is alive he determines and for once, we hear the order, "Don't move him yet."  Nelson tells this to Sharkey. In the circuitry room, someone pulls cords, making Seaview shake. In the Control Room, Chip shakes.

 

ACT THREE

Sharkey and Nelson in the sarcophagus room, fall. Sparks fly over the control room. Chip calls a fire detail to get on the fires as Seaview slides to the bottom into the sand. Chip orders a casualty list. They are under 500 feet--divers can work outside. Chip takes charge. Nelson finds the Circuitry Room was messed up and then finds Lee by the ladder. Two men come and Nelson tells them, "There's an injured man in the next corridor and one in the storage locker and...get them all to Sickbay!"  Frame 14 has a crack and divers go out to work. Sickbay: Doc tells Nelson there is a strange group of casualties: Blair--the guard at the Circuitry Room has a bruise on the back of his neck as if he were hit. Ski has shock syndrome--almost nothing wrong with him at all. Nelson is irritated, "You said that about Captain Crane and this is his third attack!"  Divers return--the hull is patched. Flying Sub is ready. Chip says, "It seems our luck is beginning to change."  Seaview surfaces. The sarcophagus is to be taken in the Flying Sub. Washington DC would prefer a less spectacular way. Crane tells Nelson he blacked out when he was checking the guard details. Nelson tells him to get some rest. He watches Lee go to his cabin up the nose. Nelson asks Chip why the crash doors are closed. He answers that damage control has to check the front end frames and it is safer to keep the doors closed just in case the window frames are weakened too much. Someone climbs down the Flying Sub ladder and plants explosives. Nelson jumps the person and they fight. The intruder tries to get up after being knocked down and out---Nelson sees it is Crane!

 

ACT FOUR

Doc checks Lee; Nelson tells Doc that Lee must have fallen and that he wants Lee given a stiff sedative to knock him out for 24 hours. Chip tells the men to take him up to Sickbay. Sharkey checks the tomb and as he does, it opens! The mummy comes out. Sharkey shoots at it and runs but it jumps at him. He gets away and closes a hatch door. It knocks it off the hinges! Sharkey runs. In the control room, Nelson asks Chip, "You're sure now---this is our exact position?"  Sharkey comes running in, "That thing--it's alive, sir."  Chip tells him to get a hold of himself. Sharkey comments that an atom bomb is going to have to stop it. This gives Nelson the idea to use the reactor against it. He orders the Reactor Room channel output of the reactor to be patched through the starboard hull main cable. Two men shoot the mummy and jump it in the hall. In the fight, the bandages come off the front part of the mummy face--and in a startlingly unexpected (and censor-less) sequence, we see a gaping black hole where the mummy eyes should be! It knocks the two men down--are they dead? Who knows? Nelson tells Chip to hurry up with the cable. Two men run into the hall to the reactor room. They shut the hatch but the mummy knocks the door in. Nelson orders the men back and takes the cable. He faces down the monster, getting as close as he can to it. He throws the cable on it and it electrifies. The mummy falls. Nelson figures they won't have any more trouble from "that."

 

TAG

The Flying Sub flies back to Seaview. Nelson says, "One sarcophagus signed for, sealed, and delivered. The crisis is over."  Crane feels better. Nelson tells him, "You won't get another attack."  Lee wonders what the explanation for this mummy business is. (As the talk gets into the mummy, we hear more of that BEN HUR style Bible-Egypt music). Nelson says, "You know, Lee, I think there are some things better left unexplained, huh."  Seaview is on the surface, sailing off.

 

REVIEW: Not as bad as it sounds. Actually quite good for one of the supernatural episodes. The mummy's motives were unclear---it kills Simpson (too bad he couldn't kill Bart Simpson) but not Kowalski, nor the two crewmen who were making repairs or painting or something. In fact, it makes them forget they saw it. Why not do this with Simpson too? Perhaps its powers are limited to two per night? Why wouldn't the mummy want peace in the nations? Did it even care? Not much reason behind the story but lots of atmosphere. I am glad the censors didn't stop that act four hole in the face mummy sequence--it is good that this didn't occur earlier in the story--keeping it under wraps (ouch!) until later made for some good scares during the last act and saved something to shock us with. Crane gets the award for being taken over the most times in the show---it actually gets a bit tedious by the end of the third season--and Crane gets taken over a bit in the fourth season too! THE MUMMY shines over WEREWOLF, BRAND OF THE BEAST, THE HAUNTED SUBMARINE, and some other supernatural episodes and stands out as a better takeoff on the mummy idea than most full fledged films. Terry Becker is again great and glad to see the character of Chip getting some mileage as temporary captain. The shakes of Seaview were starting to get on my nerves by this episode. Having an old ancient terror on a new submarine like Seaview was quite a contrast and this episode could have been much worse. As it stands, it is enjoyable and lends a sense of ancient terror, if not one that is motivated.
