VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA-No Way Back, total overview
NO WAY BACK
Seaview is undersea getting electronic interference. Crane says, "I don't like things I can't explain." Sparks calls Nelson who is at the Nelson Institute of Marine Research but Nelson can't hear Lee clearly. Nelson calls on the wall radio but the interference gets worse. Massive interference comes (as Ski reports), alarms sound, and Crane warns, "An explosive force is building somewhere." Crane yells, "Lookout--it's gonna blow!" It does. So does Seaview---it explodes into nothingness but smoke and debre...and leaves an empty sea.
Seaview dock, NIMR: Nelson is on the phone--there is no response from Seaview and no info from the searching vessels. Nelson gets a FAX message. Pat orders and then helps two men to bring in a wooden crate. Nelson's uniform looks very light in this scene. He takes out a gun and Pat breaks the seal on the crate. Nelson sends the men out to their duties. He opens the crate and a man with his arms folded opens his eyes. "Mister...Mister Pem. No, no, you're dead." Pem recalls what happened...vividly--he says, happily or unhappily--there was a small residue left in the time piece to shift him slightly in time to save his life. He tells Nelson he is a broken man. Nelson says, "You look fine to me." Pem doesn't want him to call security. "The last time you were here, you defied me to call security..what happened to the old, ohh, old arrogance?" Pem tells him he lost it, along with his control over time (calling the security inadequate) which is why he used the silly means of getting in right past security. Nelson shows him the FAX for Nelson's eyes only--Pem frowns, "You knew all along." Nelson tells him a close watch has been on Pem as soon as he stepped foot on the grounds. Pem tells him, "I am completely and utterly changed." Nelson says, "Any change where you're concerned would be for the better." Pem makes a proposition to him. Nelson doesn't want to accept, "The last deal we made together was very nearly the death of both of us." Pem continues to try to make him a deal for "the betterment of humanity" this time. Nelson tells him he is going to have him escorted off the grounds and if he ever tries to come back here, he will have him thrown in jail (why not do it now?). Pem's smile at Nelson fades as Nelson tells him this. Nelson gets a fax which changes his mind. Seaview's at the bottom of the Pacific, its hull crushed, all hands lost. Pem says, "What an unspeakable tragedy, my dear friend, if I had access to some power, I could help you..." Pem acts like he's given up hope for a partnership as Nelson listens to him and then starts to do some thinking of his own, trying to haggle Pem into helping him now. Pem tells him he bears him no malice and he mustn't intrude on his grief any longer. Nelson says, "Will you shut up--I can't think!" The two talk about saving Seaview. Nelson asks about the time device--to prevent Seaview from blowing up. They will recede in time to before the explosion and prevent it. Pem says, "We could, we could, we could." It will take him a few hours to make one and they could go back a few days--if Nelson has the means to power it. Pem tells him they have made a bargain for humanity--Nelson will let him use the Seaview reactor to power another time device. Later, at the NIMR Reactor Room, Nelson tells Pem, "To the devil with risks." They go back in time to two days before the blast. Seaview suddenly appears in the sea! They appear in the similar Reactor Room on Seaview. Pem sees Sharkey, "Hello, Chief." Nelson runs into a confused Sharkey (who not only knows Nelson is not supposed to be on board, but recalls Pem dying) in the hallway, "Sir, he's back." Nelson brings Pem to the control room, "Hello Lee." Pem comes right up to Lee, "How are you captain, nice to see you again." He follows Nelson up the nose ladder and stops and looks down at the stunned crew, "You're all looking, ahh, very well indeed." He goes up. Sharkey comes running to the Control Room and finds all stunned. Crane says, "This is insane--he's supposed to be dead." Nelson's cabin: Crane asks Nelson, "You let him back on board--have you lost your mind?" Nelson explains. Crane turns to Pem, "I see your in the fortune business telling business now?" Nelson tells Lee it hasn't happened yet, "For Mr. Pem and I are not in the present, we are one full day in the past before the explosion." Crane says, "No, no, it won't work. If we try to find the explosion, future history will be changed--it just isn't possible." Pem says it can be changed simply by changing the past, he always wonders why so many believe the past and the future cannot be changed. Crane asks, "Are you sure?" Pem is quite sure. Crane will order a wire inspection. Pem tells him he has 24 hours. Pem wants Nelson to carry out his promise--to perfect his time device. Nelson will see to it. Chip doesn't understand when Lee tells him what is happening. Crane, "We have 24 hours to find the cause of an explosion that will kill us all." Chip asks, "Did that character tell you that?" Lee tells him to do it unless he wants to die. Nelson shows Pem the lab and the metallurgy area and locks Pem in. Pem laughs and takes out his restored time piece, kisses it, and pour a liquid mix. Crane goes to the Circuitry Room. Sharkey tells him, "I'd like to be in as good a shape as this wiring." Pem uses gloves to put his time piece out of the jar and he presses it. There is a blast sound and a vanishing noise, accompanied by Seaview vanishing out of the ocean.
A blast materialization and Seaview appears at a dead stop and in shallow water--periscope depth. No shoals are in the area. Crane lets Chip look out--at night time. Nelson arrives. Crane says, "He's up to his old tricks." Nelson asks, "Pem?" He tries to make an excuse first but knows better. Seaview goes up and they crack the main hatch. Crane and Chip go up the Conning Tower and Crane lets Chip use his infrared binoculars. They see an 18th century town--an early American harbor! Chip calls the duty look outs to the bridge. Nelson confronts Pem who feels they only lost or gained 8 hours, "No, no really." Nelson asks him for his time device. Pem lies--it is still under construction. Crane tells Sharkey they are in the channel of a river. Sharkey asks, "You're putting me on?" Crane says, "You know better than that." Sharkey says, "Yes sir." He takes Chip's jacket for him to stow. Ski gets an electronic interference, line surges, and all their detection devices are knocked out. Pem, when accused by Crane says, "Captain, you wound me deeply." Lookouts come down (one of them looks like the spy who helped Beach--the killer in RESCUE). An 18th century soldier and a man come down (amid THE TIME TUNNEL-THE LAST PATROL music). The man in charge tells them he wants the vessel confiscated for the Continental Congress. Crane tells him he is not turning it over to anybody. The Major tells Crane he outguns him, which makes Nelson laugh. Pem takes out the time piece and says, "With this I outgun you all." Nelson looks at him, "You lied. You already replaced your time piece device." Pem tells them to surrender quietly or, "...do you prefer another wild excursion through time?" The major tells them his name, "Major General Benedict Arnold." Pem smiles.
It is the time of the American Revolution--September 22, 1780. Arnold says, "Zounds, what a vessel." Pem told Arnold about this vessel. Nelson says, "Well, you two seem to be old friends, isn't that nice." Nelson tells Crane that for the moment Pem and Arnold have the upper hand. Pem asks to retire to Nelson's cabin. Nelson asks Crane's word not to try anything until he gets back. As they leave, Pem smiles at Crane who tells him, "Mr. Pem, I'm warning you, sooner or later I'll have your neck for this." Sharkey plots with Crane who tells him he is sorry but he can't do this--he promised the Admiral. Pem sits in Nelson's chair behind his desk as Nelson paces which is getting on Pem's nerves. He like Nelson to stop. Nelson asks, "Is there anything else you'd like?" Pem's plan Nelson guesses has to do with Arnold's plan which he tells both of them correctly. Arnold wonders if Nelson is a devil and wants his head since he knows the whole plan. Arnold looks at Pem and talks of betrayal. Nelson laughs at the word and tells him he would not use the word if he were him. Admiral Nelson ignores Pem's warning and when Pem threatens him, Nelson tells him he now knows Pem needs the ship here and now. Pem tosses Nelson around in time and in lights. Nelson swirls around and spins in lights and lands in the NIMR. Pem's voice tells him it is a new addition to the device's powers: Nelson is isolated in time--and he will relive the agonizing moments when Seaview was destroyed. Nelson agrees he won't interfere. Arnold looks at Pem when Pem returns Nelson, "It seems I have placed myself in the hands of the devil." Nelson says, "In a sense, general, that's true." Crane calls--another character comes aboard--a Major John Andre. Crane asks, "What is this, anyway?" Andre is in civilian clothes but is an officer under Henry Clinton. Crane has heard of Andre. Arnold insisted he wear civilian clothing. Andre is bewildered to find himself on Seaview. SKi takes Andre to Nelson's cabin. Crane asks Nelson, "How long are you going to let this farce go on?" Crane insists Pem is not that clever. Nelson tells him Pem is watching his every move but Crane wonders if that is a reason to let it go on. Nelson suggests that he can't do anything about it if Crane and the men disobey his orders. "But remember, Pem could wipe us out with that pocket watch." Ski asks Nelson about those two men and Nelson tells him to ask Captain Crane. Nelson leaves. The men are up there plotting the take over of West Point. Crane tells them they have a little plotting to do of their own--down here. Arnold wants Andre to carry papers in civilian clothes. Nelson tells the men it is impossible to win their war by plotting---Mr. Pem is lying to them. Pem, Andre, and Arnold go to the Missile Room. Sharkey is authorized to use the intercom and use one word to stop Pem. Sharkey sneaks to the Missile Room door and asks a crewman if they are still inside. They are. Sharkey sends him to engineering and slowly starts to turn the wheel--Nelson sees this. Lookouts come down from the conning tower. Sharkey call the word, "Go." The helm goes to a dead flat angle--Lee doesn't want them to feel this in the Missile Room yet. Seaview moves. Pem programs the missiles to use on West Point. Seaview lowers. Ski comes to Sharkey who says, "Shhh." Crane calls for the lights to go to red. Seaview shakes purposely.
All shake. In the Missile Room, the shaking stuns the three villains. Pem takes out the time piece but Nelson pushes him and it falls to the floor. Ski rushes in and Pem kicks Nelson. Sharkey elbows Pem and gets the fallen time piece and runs out the door. Pem follows him out. Ski fights Andre aside and then uses a pipe to block the sword of Major Arnold. Ski kicks him away. Sharkey runs to the Control Room and gives the time piece to Mr. Morton who asks, "What'll I do with it?" Sharkey warns him not to push the button. Crane stops the fight and Ski takes Arnold's sword. The lights go on. Nelson takes Andre and Arnold. Men search for Pem. Crane and Ski come down to the nose control room. Chip gives the time piece to Crane, "I wish you'd be responsible for it." Crane gives it to Ski and tells him to guard it with his life. Chip calls, "All hands be on the alert for Mr. Pem." Pem hides but finds a device in the lab, "Uh ha, Admiral Nelson, we'll see who wins." Arnold tells Nelson no matter what--he would do the same things he has always done. Nelson promises him that his name will forever be remembered. He and his soldier are to be put ashore on the West Bank and Nelson tells the crewman to give him his sword. Arnold salutes Nelson who salutes back. Pem is in the hallway toward the Reactor Room. He needs power for his another device he made while in the lab. He goes inside but Crane and Sharkey are there to meet him. Pem calls it a dreary surprise and tosses the device against both their faces. Crane grabs Pem and they fight, Pem chokes him down and gets the gun Crane has. Crane continues to hold onto it. Pem kicks Crane but Sharkey stops him from shooting Crane and throws Pem. Pem falls into the reactor and is electrified as it blows. Sharkey goes to help him off of it but Crane yells and stops him, "Don't touch him! Not now!" Pem falls. Ski tells Nelson that Arnold and the soldier are on the Hudson West Bank. He then asks Nelson about Major Andre---"I like him, well, we all do, and we were wondering what will happen to him?" Nelson tells him: Andre will be found with the plans on him in civilian outfit. He will be arrested as a spy and hung. The Major is in the radio shack. He asks Nelson if he knows what will happen to him but tells Nelson he doesn't ask that Nelson reveal it to him. Andre would prefer to return in a soldier's uniform; other than that--he has no regrets. Nelson tells Ski to take Andre to the East Bank. Ski takes him up. Nelson salutes back to Andre. Crane arrives, "Pem is dead." This time there is no doubt--he took a massive dose of radiation from the reactor. Nelson figures there is a bomb planted in the ship's lab. He studied it. HOLD: STUDIED WHAT? THE INTERFERENCE? HOW DID THE BOMB INTERFERE WITH SEAVIEW'S ELECTRONICS? HOW DID NELSON KNOW? DID NELSON STUDY IT BY GOING THROUGH TIME? WE DIDN'T SEE THAT. Nelson wants to use the time piece to return to the immediate past just before the blast and jettison the bomb--Crane feels it is too bad they can't go remove it now. Nelson tells him, "It isn't there yet." Ski calls--Andre is rowing to the bay. Nelson presses the button on the watch. He appears in NIMR office. We see the TEASER material over--Seaview picks up electronic interference; Ski warns the captain and the exec about this. Nelson checks his watch, "It's about time for the explosion--it's almost too late."
NIMR--Nelson sends himself to Seaview via the time piece. He runs to the lab. Crane asks Sparks to call Nelson at the NIMR. Nelson, in the lab, searches the cabinets and finds it. He runs. Chip tells Crane the interference is getting worse. Ski tells Crane there is a massive interference now. HEY WAIT--didn't Crane actually get Nelson the first time around? So time has changed. Also--shouldn't Pem and Nelson be appearing a day in the past again? Or did that already happen? Time travel is strange. Anyhow, Crane looks, telling them that an explosive force is building somewhere. Nelson runs to the Missile Room and puts the bomb in the torpedo tube and fires. Crane says, "Lookout, it's gonna blow!" There is a huge blast outside. Seaview shakes a bit and there are bubbles. Pem's scheme was to change the course of history using the American Revolution--he found a way to make the loss of the American Revolution work toward his goal of making him the most powerful man in the 20th Century. Nelson says, "Knowing Mr. Pem it could've worked out." The time piece, Nelson says, will have to be destroyed--he's afraid the world isn't quite ready for it. He leaves it on the table. Seaview sails off.
REVIEW: Mr Pem returns and he is very bad indeed but Mr. Pem's second story is actually much better than A TIME TO DIE. Benedict Arnold and Major Andrew make an appearance and Seaview is back in time again...but this time getting involved with the humans of the period. Last time, they were thrown back to the prehistoric age and only became involved with a few dinos. Henry Jones is fantastic here, making Pem a much liked villain, liked and likeable. His interplay with the entire regular cast is good. Basehart and Jones seem to have fantastic timing and rapport in almost every scene. The interplay is very good this time out, what with Pem seeing the whole crew again after they thought he was dead. The scene when he first re-walks through the control room is hilarious and memorable, certainly a classic. I like how he greets Crane with, "Hello, Captain, nice to see you again." Then he peers out from the nose ladder, "You're all looking, ahh, very well." Sharkey's first re-meeting with Pem in the hall is also quite nice, leaving Sharkey stunned. Pem smiles, "Hello Chief Sharkey." Sharkey addressed Nelson, "Sir, he's back." Ski's liking of Major Andre is a nice character touch and he tells Nelson the whole crew likes him. The discussion about changing time and history is also very well done and written. There are also mentions back to A TIME TO DIE which are quite correct--perhaps the most continuity VOYAGE ever had (with the possible exception of failsafe, the push of countries to create a proton bomb, the drone devices, and planting the missile deterrents for war on the bottom of the sea). Nelson mentions their last partnership that almost cost both he and Pem both their lives and also makes mention of the fact that Pem doesn't want him to call security as he did in A TIME TO DIE. Since this is the last episode, Seaview has to be blown to smithereens, right? Right! It all works out though, don't worry, this isn't BLAKE'S SEVEN where when a ship is destroyed, it's for good! The stock music was excellent here; the sets very good and lively; the fights well choreographed--I particularly like the scene when Sharkey steals the time piece away from Pem in the middle of a large fight. Too bad this is the last episode, Pem should have returned again. To VOYAGE's credit, Major Andre was depicted as a real person rather than an out and out villain, something the show rarely, if ever, did, even in the much heralded first season.
WHAT IF: What if Kowalski, when he left to take Andre off Seaview, felt so badly about the man's future and his request to leave with an officer's uniform, gave him the uniform and/or told him what would happen? What if time changed due to this? What if Andre changed places with Arnold and it was really Arnold who was hanged? It makes an interesting alternate idea or story.
HISTORY LESSON--Oct. 2, 1780: Maj. John Andre, adjutant general to British Gen. Sir Henry Clinton, was hanged as a spy at Tappan, New York. Andrew had been apprehended on Sept 23 by three militiamen as he returned from a secret meeting with Gen. Benedict Arnold, who, as commander of West Point, had agreed to surrender the key American fort on the Hudson River to the British. The plot uncovered, Arnold fled to safety in New York City.
FOURTH SEASON NOTES: Several episodes this season were so much better than most of the third season's offers. One or two were so much worse. Overall, this was a good season to end on and some of the best stories of the four years were here: FIRES OF DEATH, THE DEADLY DOLLS, CAVE OF THE DEAD, SEALED ORDERS, MAN OF MANY FACES, RESCUE, BLOW UP, MAN-BEAST, EDGE OF DOOM, THE DEATH CLOCK and NO WAY BACK. True, Season One and most of two held better crafted tales but this season (four) was not a bad one to go out on while they gained back some (note: some) respectability.
Honors to Terry Becker and Richard Basehart for filling many episodes from seasons three and four with clever banter (which seemed to be ad libbing) and the Sharkey-Nelson routine of Sharkey asking questions and Nelson irritated, answering, sometimes without an answer! Episodes that come to mind: MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE (the first real Sharkey-Nelson teaming), TERROR ON DINOSAUR ISLAND, MONSTER FROM THE INFERNO, THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED, NIGHT OF TERROR, THE TERRIBLE TOYS, THING FROM INNER SPACE, DEADLY INVASION, THE LOST BOMB, BRAND OF THE BEAST (where Sharkey lies for Nelson), THE CREATURE (a brilliant lab scene between Basehart and Becker is wonderfully played), DEATH FROM THE PAST (their team up is wonderful), THE FOSSIL MEN (a classic Sharkey-Nelson team up), NO ESCAPE FROM DEATH, FATAL CARGO, TIME LOCK, THE RETURN OF BLACKBEARD, TERRIBLE LEPRECHAUN, FLAMING ICE, and NO WAY BACK. They both made these episodes so much better than any of them had a right to be. Of course, Terry acted well with each member of the rest of the cast including times he was paired up with Kowalski (often), Patterson, and even Chip Morton (whose character along with Sparks, got the least amount of personality). The friendship between Chip and Lee, so well played in the first season, was still there and it is to the credit of both actors that they maintained this despite actual scripts that could allow them to do so (Chip wanted to be ordered to test Crane in EDGE OF DOOM). Both could also carry an episode that had no right to survive a first airing (DEADLY CLOUD for one, JOURNEY WITH FEAR for another). They also could survive without Terry Becker and Basehart if they had to--witness the very well done THE MECHANICAL MAN (with the help of two excellent guest stars in James Darren and Arthur O'Connell. Hedison also showed a fine range of acting ability in BLOW UP, EDGE OF DOOM, MAN OF MANY FACES, MAN-BEAST, THE DEATH CLOCK, NIGHTMARE, and others. WAX MEN had to be one of his finest hours this season, among others. He was taken over a lot less this season (a role now filled by Ski who was taken over in THE RETURN OF BLACKBEARD, THE DEADLY AMPHIBIANS, and ATTACK!) but overall the "crew taken over" sub plots were a lot less--they were however, replaced with THE DEADLY DOLLS and on another occasion a few robots in NIGHTMARE. While a bit schizo, this season proved VOYAGE could wind down with merit and dignity.
