This Week In Doctor Who
November 7, 2009 - Vol 12, No 41
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide since 1998.

Health issues kept me from getting last week's column produced and out. They also ate much of the time I would have spent on this issue, so crossing fingers for a good result.

BBC Radio 7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio7 aired a new to broadcast (CD release in 2008) Doctor Who audio story. Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith in Sisterhood Of The Flame. It was the 7th episode in the 2nd series of audios produced for Big Finish but intended for radio broadcast. Depending on when you get the column, the audio may still be online at Radio 7's website. If you want to listen to it - hurry! Episode 8, which concludes a cliffhanger from this episode and the series of audios, is expected to air on BBC Radio 7 around Christmas.

The Waters Of Mars (the next Doctor Who episode) has airdates in 3 Countries now:
UK - Sunday 15 November 7PM GMT BBC One/BBC HD simulcast
UK - Wednesday 18 November 8PM GMT BBC Three
AUSTRALIA - Sunday 6 December 7:30PM ABC1
USA - Saturday 19 December 9PM, Midnight, and 3AM EST (6PM, 9PM, and Midnight PST) BBC America

Doctor Who Confidential will have a 1 hour episode - Is There Life On Mars? The episode will premiere on 15 November at 8PM GMT (BBC Three/BBC HD simulcast) and 3:30AM (BBC Three only).

There will be a full length podcast commentary for The Waters Of Mars like all recent Doctor Who episodes. At the moment, this commentary is scheduled to air on BBC Radio 7 late Saturday 14 November at Midnight GMT. I am aware that this is 19 hours *before* the TV showing of The Waters Of Mars. If it is a mistake, then the schedule will update in the next few days. If it isn't, remember that the commentary generally goes online for a week after broadcast and that Radio 7's programming can be heard through their Listen Again service for a week, so nobody has to spoil themselves for the episode to ensure that they hear the commentary. Meanwhile, if Radio 7 actually does air the commentary before BBC One airs the episode and you hear the commentary, try not to spoil everybody you know on the plot before the show airs. Thank you.

SPACE in Canada was expected to announce an airdate for The Waters Of Mars soon. They have listings up through Friday 27 November. If those are correct, the earliest possible Canadian airdate is Saturday 28 November.

BBC America will probably treat Waters Of Mars and the 2 part David Tennant finale as a 3 episode special. They plan to announce airdates for the last 2 episodes in early December and at the moment expect to air them in the holiday season. Special BBC America events related to the Waters Of Mars:
Sunday 13 December 1PM EST/10AM PST - Doctor Who marathon with "best episodes", including The Next Doctor and Planet Of The Dead.
Saturday 19 December 8PM EST/5PM PST (with the usual 2 repeats later at night) - Doctor Who special, 1 hour (no details)
Saturday 19 December 9PM EST/6PM PST (with the usual 2 repeats) - 90 minute slot for The Waters Of Mars, definitely uncut
Saturday 19 December 10:30PM EST/7:30PM PST (with the usual 2 repeast) - 30 minute Graham Norton Doctor Who special, which will probably be a cutdown version of the Graham Norton show airing in the next few days on BBC One and BBC America where he interviews David Tennant for the first time since 2007.

Australian fans can note that ABC's broadcast of Waters Of Mars, 21 days after the UK airing, is the fastest arrival of a new Who episode to date.

The new animated Doctor Who story Dreamland (starring David Tennant and Georgia Moffett) will air soon. I've heard rumblings of 21 to 26 November on the Red Button service, but need to recheck that.

The official cast list for the 2010 Doctor Who series:

The Doctor: Matt Smith
Amy Pond: Karen Gillan

For press releases on Doctor Who, keep an eye on the BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media http://www.c21media.net .

USA - Doctor Who - Series 3 (The Runaway Bride and the 13 episode 2007 series with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) are now distributed to Public TV stations by BBC Worldwide Americas, not American Public TV. Series 4 also seems to be available to buy - start date for Series 4 on Public TV stations is unknown. BBC Worldwide Americas also distributes classic Doctor Who to stations.

If you're a PBS station airing Doctor Who and I don't have you listed - contact me. If you're watching Doctor Who on a PBS station that's not on this list - contact me AND tell me the day, time, and episode that aired so I can track things down (some stations have websites where schedule information is - lacking).

The public TV stations known to have bought The Runaway Bride and Series 3:
WXXI 21 Rochester, NY
WTTW 11 Chicago, IL (currently in first run)
WGVU/WGVK 35,52 Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo, MI
WILL 12 Urbana, IL
WTVP 47 Peoria, IL
Iowa Public TV
Idaho Public TV
Wisconsin Public TV
Milwaukee Public TV
KUED 7 Salt Lake City, UT
OETA Oklahoma
KLRU 18 Austin, TX
Alaska Public TV
WSKG/WSKA 46,30 Binghamton/Elmira, NY
KERA 13 Dallas, TX (currently in first run)

Now, I am confident that there are more stations with rights to Series 3 than that. But these are the stations who have contacted me or scheduled the show. Unlike previous years, we are in the dark till a station comes forward or new Who appears in their schedules.

Series 2 is currently available to public TV stations in an American Public TV package until March 31, 2010. For the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have bought the rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required to do so. American Public TV is no longer offering Series 1 - I do not know if BBC Worldwide Americas will offer those stations to public TV stations now or not.

2 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run (1963-1989), but not New Who. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA is airing Peter Davison episodes. WHRO 15 Norfolk, VA is airing Tom Baker episodes.

Doctor Who (and other) fans get together to discuss anything that is unusual, odd, or otherwise not normal. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere - until somebody mentions the quality control of Talkshoe's service. Chats open 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Current episodes:
11. Doctor Who's Mighty 200 - The Good (part 2). Ian and Dave do a studio show summarizing what happened when they recorded episode 11, as Talkshoe ate the recording. The top 4 stories were discussed.
12. Doctor Who's Mighty 200 - The Bad (part 1). A local recording as Talkshoe failed again. This time you get to hear the whole gang discuss the 6th to 10th least liked Doctor Who stories per the DWM poll. The Doctor Who theme sung like cats was suggested by me and I did the opening sting.
13. Doctor Who's Mighty 200 - The Bad (part 2). Talkshoe was working properly again and recorded this look at the least popular stories by fan vote.
14. Doctor Who's Mighty 200 Wrap Up. Final thoughts. What callers thought should have gone in the top spots instead.
Upcoming episodes:
Sunday 8 November 3PM EST/Noon PST/8PM GMT - 15. A new topic of some type. Also, find out when the show will air on 15 November, as the new Doctor Who episode on BBC One will complicate things.

Episode 58 - "On time and under budget" - Well, that's the rumor I hear about how the latest Staggering Story recording turned out. That was also what was said about the recordings of The Twin Dilemma. ;)

Part of the Earth-2 family of podcasts. Warning - explicit language (swearing). If your headphones leak any sound at all - do not listen at work.
Current episodes
24. The Web Of Fear. One story to rule them all. One story to guide them. And other stuff.
25. Fury From The Deep and The Wheel In Space. Victoria goes out on a (relative) high in our hosts' minds. But all thoughts of Victoria are sucked out the airlock by the arrival of Zoe Herriot.
Coming soon-ish - 25. The Dominators and The Mind Robber.

Hoo On Who http://hooonwho.com
Fan reviews of recent Doctor Who DVDs by David Hooie, frequently with a guest co-host.
Current episode:
#14. The Caves Of Androzani. Well, eventually David reviews The Caves Of Androzani. First he goes a bit off format to have an excellent interview with podcaster/radio host Steve Glosson, host of SHoE, Geek Out Loud, and the Big Honkin' Show. Also, David is planning a get together with listeners at Gallifrey 21. Now, if I'm right about the hot tub he wants to meet at, he may have to relocate the meeting to the somewhat cooler pool just a few feet away - my memory is that the hot one is rather small. Rest assured, there is a detailed review of The Caves Of Androzani in the episode.

The Cloister Room http://thecloisterroom.com
Tom Dickinson begins a solo Doctor Who podcast effort with short shows on short subject that get to the point, bulldoze through the point, back up to ground the point down some more, then flee the scene before the police arrive.
Current episode - 4. Requiem For A Drama. Tom returns after 4 weeks away and looks at shows that are cancelled before their time. Is it worth investing in a show that might soon (or has already) been cancelled. Tom's view is similar to mine (yes, it is worth it), but you're downloading Tom's show for his opinions on this.

Tachyon TV http://www.tachyon-tv.co.uk
Irregular and irreverant podcast looking at the world of Doctor Who with a funhouse mirror and coming out the other side holding a plush toy that wasn't really the one you wanted but you'll keep it anyway because you can give it to your girlfriend to impress her. It's that kind of show.
Current segment - a short appeal by "Rula Lenska".

MMM Commentaries/Fantragic http://www.mmmcommentaries.com

The Frantragic episodes look at Doctor Who and other sci-fi news. Fantragic episodes are on a different iTunes feed from MMM Commentary episodes.
Current Doctor Who episode - Journey's End. If the description in the iTunes tag is anything to go by, this running commentary on the Doctor Who Series 4 finale will not have a happy ending.

New Sarah Jane episodes are still airing in the UK, as visible in the listings.

An illness cancelled last week's edition of the column, keeping me from reporting on the special premiere preview of K-9 on DisneyXD in the UK. The pilot episode of the K-9 show aired on 31 October at 6PM GMT. No evidence of a repeat scheduled, but the full 26 episode series will be airing in Australia, the UK, and other countries in 2010. K-9 is made by Bob Baker, one of the writers who developed K-9 as a Doctor Who character in the 1970s. Since this is not a BBC production, it is unlikely to make any direct Doctor Who references and vie for any "canon" titles. But the K-9 in this series is believed to be the first K-9 from the 1977-1978 Doctor Who episodes at some later point in its life.

USA and CANADA - Sarah Jane Series 2 will actually premiere in these two countries on DVD, barring last minute surprises. The DVD release is Tuesday November 10th. That's this Tuesday. Time for the North American continent to get (almost) caught up.

A launch trailer for DisneyXD in the UK included K9 clips. If a bunch of Disney XD branded channels start airing K9, this section will get very busy very quickly.
