The animated Doctor Who adventure, Dreamland starring David Tennant as the 10th Doctor will be shown daily starting on Saturday, the 21st of November 2009. The six episode animated series will be shown on the BBC Red Button and the Doctor Who website (most likely locked down to UK visitors only unfortunately).
Being billed as "Doctor Who meets a 50's monster B-movie," the mini series is written by Phil Ford and takes place in the USA (ironically as of yet there has been no announced dates or releases for US fans for this animated series), Area 51 (in Nevada) known for its alien lore. The Doctor finds himself in Dreamland, a secret base in the US which leads him on a mission to rescue Rivesh Mantilax from the threat of the Viperox as well as the American military of course.
It also stars Georgia Moffett returning to Doctor Who not as Jenny, "the Doctor's daughter" but rather as a new character, Cassie. She joins Tim Howar as companions to the Doctor. Renowned actor, David Warner plays the heavy in the story as the leader of the Viperox, Lord Azlok.
The animation is described as "eye-catching high-definition 3-D" (you can see a video clip here), breaking from the Flash-style we had seen previously with The Infinite Quest, the most recent animated Doctor Who adventure also directed by Gary Russell.
Dreamland will be available on Sky/Virgin and Freeview platforms as well also starting on the 21st of November running through the 28th of November.
The following are the episode summaries for series (warning: potential spoilers):
Dry Springs, Nevada, 1958. The Doctor befriends a young waitress, Cassie, and her friend, Jimmy, at a diner. The Doctor activates an alien artefact and, after finding further signs of alien activity, the US Army intervenes and takes him and his new companions to the mysterious Area 51 in Roswell, where they find out about Operation Fallen Angel. Will Operation leader Colonel Stark succeed in making the curious trio forget what they have just seen?
Seeking refuge in the abandoned town of Solitude, Jimmy stumbles across a disconcerting discovery and the trio encounter Viperox royalty.
The Doctor cannot understand why the Alliance of Shades' mop-up team are more concerned with the whereabouts of a piece of space flight hardware than the hordes of Viperox pods hidden underground. Things start to fall into place when Jimmy's grandfather, Night Eagle, introduces the Doctor to Rivesh Mantilax.
Captured by the US Army, Rivesh is finally reunited with his wife, Saruba Velak. Meanwhile, the Doctor discovers the unsettling truth about his real identity.
The Doctor and Saruba have to confront the mysterious alien force in the vault housing her space ship if they are to save her husband and stop Lord Azlok from rousing his sleeping army.
As sunset falls, the Viperox drones start to attack the US Army base. Can the Doctor find a way to halt the seemingly unstoppable aliens in their tracks?
