Doctor Who "Series 9" Season Pass Purchase Available on iTunes

The new upcoming Doctor Who series ("Series 9") is now available to purchase as a season pass on Apple's iTunes. On iTunes it is being referred to as "Season 9". So if you enjoy watching the new episodes on iTunes, you might as well grab the season pass now so that you will be all set once September 19th rolls around. You can find it here: Doctor Who, Season 9 - Doctor Who

Enhanced Podcast Features and Tandem With The Random

How do you listen to audio podcasts? Are you taking advantage of the features of the enhanced podcast format? In other words, accessing the chapters, embedded images and links? The reason I am asking is because all signs point to the fact that Apple is phasing this format out. Their latest Podcast app doesn't seem to support it. Oh, it will play fine, and it will still sound better than the plain mp3 version, but the aforementioned features are absent. Also their latest version of GarageBand has removed the tools to create those features for enhanced podcasts.

Sonic Screwdriver? There's an App for That!

Now in the iOS App Store is the Doctor Who: Sonic Screwdriver (Official) (for iOS 5 or later). Is if it wasn’t already overused on the television series, now it’s available on our iPhone. It includes four 3D models of sonic screwdrivers and thankfully not just limited the last seven years. It gives you a choice of two kinds of backgrounds for your sonic screwdriver. One is “transparent” (thanks to the rear camera) which emulates holding the actual sonic screwdriver as it will pick up whatever background you are pointing your iOS device towards (pretty nifty, huh?). Of course it has various sonic screwdriver sounds (it wouldn’t be “sonic” otherwise). You can even shake the 11th Doctor’s model to extend it. Plus it’s a flashlight app as well (for those with a camera flash and who haven’t updated to iOS 7 which now has it built-in the OS, may find this feature handy).

Thank You, Steve

What a week it has been. Unless perhaps you have been off-world or visiting another time era all this past week, you know we lost Apple co-founder and former CEO, and great tech innovator and visionary, Steve Jobs.

It is a good chance that there wouldn't be a Doctor Who: Podshock show if it were not for Apple under the leadership of Steve Jobs making the iPod so ubiquitous across the world. It certainly wouldn't had been called "Podshock" at least ("iPod" begat "podcast" begat "Podshock"). Now in our seventh year, it has been produced from the beginning using Apple products as it is today.

Torchwood: Web of Lies - Free iOS App (for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch)

Torchwood: Web of LiesBBC Worldwide LTD has released a new iOS app, Torchwood: Web of Lies (App Store link) to coincide with the new Torchwood series,Torchwood: Miracle Day. It is a series of adventures presented in episodes within the app. The first free download gives you episode 1 of Torchwood: Web of Lies. Each week after coinciding with the new series there will be another new episode released (presumably sold as an in-app purchase). Each episode tells the story through animated graphics and gameplay. There will be 10 episodes in total, again mirroring the current series, Miracle Day.

It is a universal app so it will run natively on both the iPhone (and iPod touch) and iPad.

The following is their description for the app:

Doctor Who: The Rebel Flesh Finally on iTunes (and Amazon)

The Rebel Flesh

The long wait is over if you have been waiting for The Rebel Flesh to appear on iTunes. This year, the new episodes have been appearing on iTunes within hours of it being broadcast of BBC America, as opposed to last year when it was usually a 24 hour wait. I even made a point of mentioning how fast they are appearing this year in Doctor Who: Podshock 247. So wouldn't you know that this week, they deliberately held back on it just to prove me wrong. Well, perhaps not deliberately. There was some issue though that had held it up.

It is now available now in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Although it had been listed on Amazon, there were reports that it was not downloading from them. Now that it is available via iTunes, we might assume that the download issue from Amazon has also been resolved.

Below are the links to fetch the episode from the respective provides:

Price Reduction for Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch!

Mazes of Time

As previously reported, the Doctor Who iOS game, Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time debuted in the Apple App Store last December. There are two versions, one is for the iPhone and iPod touch, and an HD version for the iPad. Unfortunately, it is not a universal app, so you can either get the iPhone/iPod touch version and upscale it for the iPad, or alternatively get the HD version specifically for the iPad.

The prices in the US App store had been $3.99 and $4.99 respectively, but are NOW ONLY 99¢ each. So if you have been holding off purchasing this game for the iOS platform, now is the time (that includes myself). At this time, I don't know if this price reduction only pertains to the US iTunes App Store or if it is worldwide. Also I do not know if this is a permanent price reduction or a limited time sale.

Doctor Who: Podshock Podcast Companion App Update Released

The Doctor Who: Podshock Podcast Companion App has been updated to version 1.1.1 and is now available in the iTunes App Store for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

The update should address a bug that may had prevented you from seeing episodes (podcast episodes and exclusives) appearing on your screen on the iPad. A couple other bugs were addressed as well.

To learn more about the app, see: Podshock? There's an App for That!

Sound That is Bigger on the Inside: The Speakal Doctor Who TARDIS Speaker Prototype [UPDATED]

Speakal TARDIS

This week is the annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, which means there is a tremendous amount of tech related announcements coming out of the show. As often is the case, there is some crossover between tech and sci-fi. The Panasonic booth had a special "most impressive" (as they termed it) announcement of (pre-orders for) the Star Wars films coming to Blu-ray. I had heard there would be a TARDIS speaker system at the show, but didn't have much details on it. Engadget has come to the rescue (since I am not at the show myself) with this report of hands-on prototype of the new Speakal TARDIS speaker dock and Bluetooth speaker and IR remote control system.

I am assuming it will work with the iPhone as well as the iPod. The photos show an iPhone in the dock (a white at that). If the speakers are shielded enough to prevent GSM radio noise interference from the iPhone, it should work.

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol Now Available in iTunes (US)

If you took part in our live show or if you listen to Doctor Who: Podshock 232, you will know at the time of our live recording (5pm EST 26 December 2010) that the latest Doctor Who Christmas special, A Christmas Carol still had not shown up on iTunes to purchase or rent.

Since that time, it is now available in the US iTunes store: A Christmas Carol - Doctor Who, The Matt Smith Specials
