Doctor Who

The Saga of Gary Russell and his DWNY Mug!
So on listening to Doctor Who: Podshock episode 159, the story was once again told of Gary Russell and his DWNY mug! Or rather the lack thereof! And I feel compelled to set the record straight! And where better than my blog on this very website!
I started running the Doctor Who New York (DWNY) group (on the web at http://dwny.org) last year, taking it over from a very dear friend who had built up the group since its inception in 2005, but for whom work was starting to take up too much time to keep it all going. Prior to this "regeneration", Gary had joined us at one of our meetups – the viewing of the 2007 Christmas Special Voyage of the Damned”. Before I took over, for those of you following along at home!

Matt Smith Comes to America
BBC America announces the U.S. premiere of Doctor Who featuring Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.
On the heels of returning from San Diego Comic Con where BBC America saw a strong reception to its Doctor Who programming and panels (including appearing in person, David Tennant, John Barrowman, and Russell T Davies), and with the strong ratings that the recent airing of Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead brought in, BBC America has announced the acquisition of 13 episodes of the new upcoming Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor series. The new series shot in HD will be shown on BBC America shortly after the UK in the second quarter of 2010.

Welcome, as This Week In Doctor Who gets closer and closer to being back on schedule. Once you get off schedule, it gets tricky to get back to schedule. Thanks to everyone for bearing with the recent publication problems and the ones that may occur one week this fall when I move.

First Memories and a Reminder
While listening to TARDIS Tara’s semi-live Comic-Con reports Podshock Episode 157, and reading and hearing various other reports on the Doctor Who panel, one comment really stood out in my mind. That was Julie Gardner’s comment on what made her fall in love with Doctor Who. She reported that the first story that Russell showed her when they started work on the series was the Season 17 story “City of Death”, and from that moment she said she has been a confirmed fan.

Who York Events
Thanks for the welcome to the blog so far! This installment is a little bit more newsy than opinion - but rest assured I have more opinions to come!
Listeners to Podshock episode 157 will hear Jarrod Cooper, the chairman of the Hurricane Who convention (http://hurricanewho.com) taking place in Orlando, Florida from Friday October 30 - Sunday November 1 2009, mention a new endeavour taking place in New York City associated with DWNY - Who York.
Plans are still being made and will be revealed here shortly, but our first event is expected to be in November, 2009. If you bookmark http://whoyork.com you will see that we are already putting some preparations in place.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! Part Two

After the Doctor Who panel ended, I hauled butt over to the Sails Pavillion, where my Darlng Husband had run through multiple lines to get me a ticket for the autograph session and saved me a place in line.
There were wild rumors that David Tennant would take part in this session and Murray Gold had hinted on Twitter that he might also take part in it.
But no. Euros Lyn, Julie Gardner and Russell T. came in after about an hour's wait.
Thanks to the DH, I was right up in front of the line and had a moment or two to trade comments with RTD.
Of course, I have my own agenda, and asked him, as he'd just claimed that Four was *his* Doctor, why the BBC no longer distributes Doctor Who Scarf patterns.
He'd had no idea and offered to look into it. I gave him my card.

Beginnings and Endings
Please Note: There will be spoilers in this blog entry if you haven't seen the UK press in the last week, or the reports out of San Diego Comic-Con.
The last week has been a fantastic time to be a Doctor Who fan - and the proof of how great this show is, could be seen in the thousands of screaming fans in San Diego yesterday morning, as the celebrated the coming end of an era - And what a ride that ending looks like its going to be. Frights on Mars with water and who knows what else, and then "The End of Time" itself, with Wilf, Donna, the Master, Timothy Dalton and the last days of Planet Earth!!!! It all looks very dark indeed! Whatever happened to Russell's promise not to scare the kids on Christmas Day??!!!!
Hand-Held "Corrected" Video of the 'End of Time' Promo
This promo for the End of Time presented at San Diego Comic Con this past weekend was shot by someone in the audience. The hand-held shaky video uploaded to YouTube by safia43 was then stabilized and cleaned up a bit by colonelbarker to the give you what you see here below. It features an element that would had been considered a spoiler before Comic Con, but now is not as the BBC has already announced it. Hopefully a better version of this promo will become available on the net soon, in the meantime, here below is probably the best version of it on YouTube (catch it while you can).
Officially Announced - Spoiler No More? (We'll let you judge)
A returning character and actor to the upcoming Doctor Who specials that until now has been regarded as a spoiler has been officially announced by the BBC. There's no avoiding it now. You will know for sure now as 'the cat is out of the bag' with this announcement. Having said that, we will still let you decide. Click the "Read more" below to find out.
New Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars Trailer (YouTube)
As just reported, the BBC has made a new trailer for Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars available for the UK only. For everyone else, there's YouTube (watch it while you can):
If for some reason it is removed from YouTube, here is the BBC America version of the promo trailer as well:

Nothing Major Announced at SDCC So Far
No movie or other big news coming out of San Diego Comic Con 2009 relating to Doctor Who to report as of yet. Stay tuned to the upcoming Doctor Who: Podshock - Episode 157 in which we have quasi-live coverage with our correspondent Tara Wheeler of the events taking place today at the SDCC Doctor Who panel with David Tennant, Russell T Davies, and Julie Gardner and more.
With that said, it is still a very exciting convention with the guests on hand. We will have plenty to report in the next Doctor Who: Podshock.
